GAZ LJ1 - The Sea of Dread

Post by LordJuss » Mon Jan 09, 2017 2:49 pm

Hi all,

After what is best described as several years of development hell, I would like to (finally) present my Gazetteer of the Sea of Dread.

https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B3jXKG ... p=drivesdk

This was originally intended to be part of the Gaz F range but OldDawg hasn't been around for a long while so I felt it would be better presented as Gaz LJ1. That said, it's designed to be completely compatible with the Gaz F range as published so far and is in a similar style. It's also intended to mesh with the Mystara 2300BC work and is based on a lot of the Sea of Dread stuff developed over the years (thanks to all those who contributed).

Cartography may eventually follow but, for the moment, I thought it was best to get it published.

Let me know what you think and I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it.

LJ.

I've only been able to browse over it but I can see that it is a great resource. Wish I had it when I was running my Isle of Dread campaign a couple of years ago. :)

I know nothing of Mystara, but that's an impressive amount of work! Well done! :-D

Does anyone know how OldDawg is getting on? If this was supposed to be part of a larger book, perhaps that larger book could be built later. Then people could have two great fanon options for their Mystara games.

This is definitely going to be the Basis for My Next campaign. I have enjoyed the GAZF series and the LJ series is off to a good start. I like the Use of Kara-Kara Throughout the region with variations in their Societies. I enjoyed all of the Write Ups on the Captains. I Shall Read more about the Isle of Dread and the Twaelar Empire Tomorrow.

Thank you again.

The good point of these islands is that they are reasonably easy to port to other worlds as well...

Hey LJ,

I've got a couple of maps to share here... man, I forgot how immense they were! Here is the first:
SeaOfDread_1000AC_8mph

And one of undersea:
SeaOfDread_Undersea_1000AC_8mph

While I think these larger maps are great as references, I think it would probably be easier to finish them up if we can chop them up into smaller pieces (we can put them back together later if we want). Any ideas where we should start?

Hi,

They are vast (and really good)!

I think I'd start with the surface map of the archipelago. Why don't we cut down to just the archipelago from Emoren to Teki-Moa-Ha (left to right) and work those up fully at 8mph? Once that's done we could step out a level and do Twaelar on the undersea map.

Sound OK?

LJ.

Yup, that sounds like a plan. I'll break them out and share shortly.

He is surviving, if in somewhat poorer health than he once was, and trying to get tenure. But I saw this and figured I'd pop in for a moment and say hey and congratulate LordJuss.

Long before I opted to stick with one region at a time, The Sea of Dread was originally going to be the third entry in GazF after Wendar and Denagoth. I may get to that one day, and I will definitely incorporate this gaz's material.

This is a nice work. I haven't gone over it in great deal, but I did like that you went literary with your sources. Back when I was regularly doing this sort of thing, sourcing things was one of the great parts about putting the gazetteers together.

Also kudos and thanks on putting your own branding on it. What does Gaz LJ2 have in store?

Hey guys - haven't forgotten about this - it's my next mapping project. So far what I did was crop out the center of my Sea of Dread map and clean up the islands a little bit. I left a portion of Hattias Island in the northeast and the tip of Ochalea in the southeast for position comparisons.

https://sites.google.com/site/exilescam ... C_8mph.png

I think the next step is to fill in some of the reefs a bit more... possibly using this map of Adhuza to figure out where the reefs would likely be.

What other details do we want to see on this map? Any ideas?

Your work in progress map looks great, John. One question: wouldn't the reefs from the past age be well below the sea by now?

On another note, LordJuss, how is the compatibility with your work and Zendrolion's Minor Islands of the Sea of Dread? (http://pandius.com/sodmnisl.html)

There probably needs to be some retconning in my BC maps. I think the reefs are valid in the modern era. I can't remember where I found it (X6 or X7?), but there was a reference that implied the reason why Ierendi and Minrothad were sea powers was that they knew how to sail around the reefs in the Dragon's Maw, and many of the other nations didn't. That meant that if Thyatis wanted to ship goods to Jaibul (or wherever out west), they would have to contract with an Ierendian sea captain.

I'll see if I can go back through my notes and actually find the reference for that. Anyway, if that is true, then the reefs back in BC times would be more extensive... and there should probably be a few more islands dotted along the outskirts of the Dragon's Maw. When sea levels rise, these islands would become the base of the modern day reef system.

I agree that it certainly makes sense to have these in the Sea of Dread. Just looking at it, it looks like it would be pretty awful to navigate.

One other thing that I noticed: your placement of Teki-Nura-Ria is not quite the same as GAZ8's. (See this thread for pictures: https://www.facebook.com/groups/mystara ... 756392724/ )
