New World: The Final Colonies

Postby dulsi » Thu Sep 12, 2013 3:12 am

New World: The Final Colonies is the campaign setting I've been using for my 4E game. I've decided to post some material about the setting in hopes that it will compel me to do a complete book for the setting.

Looks interesting. Are you going for something similar to Maztica? Is there a "North America" counterpart to these new colonies as well?

I like the Aztec-like Tieflings

The colonies is the "North America" like section. (Napoboth Bay is a Massachusetts analogue. New Flamemouth being like the formation of Rhode Island.) South is the "Central America" like section which has the Aztec like Tieflings. Despite a different initial plan, most of the campaign has been about the dragonborn.

Cool,
the Dragonborn are the analog to Native Americans I presume? do they also have elements of Native American culture? Religion, feather ornaments etc?

Yes they have elements of Native American culture. I haven't detailed too many Great Spirits for them. One PC in my game is a Rune Priest of the Spring Tortoise name named Calm-Wind-Over-Grass. The adventures have involved the Coyote and Cocoon as well. They do not use metal weapons/armor due to some event in the past. Discovering what happened has been a big part of the game.

I created Eagle and Serpent Knights for the New World inhabitants. They are inspired by the Eagle and Jaguar Knights but I used serpent to tie them to Couatl.

Aha, cool.
So the PCs are natives to the continent? I assumed they were going to play the colonists? Or are they a mix?

Mixed. I started with four players. One who had never played before. I expected one person to play a dwarf cleric because he had been trying them out in 3.5 but he decided to go with dragonborn. The party consisted of dragonborn cleric, dragonborn fighter, elf warlock and elf druid. When PH3 came out, the cleric asked to change to a rune priest. So he discovered a book teaching him about an older tradition than the cleric. After that we added a human psion to the game as the dragonborn fighter became less reliable. The player of the elf druid wanted to change to human. I had Cocoon worshippers kidnap him and drain his life essence to create the insectare and turn him human. Another dragonborn fighter was added to the party recently.

Latest post is about Dwarves. I had hoped to put together a bigger article but decided it's better to keep posting little bits than wait for a large update.

This looks pretty interesting (and also looks pretty system neutral to me). Did you ever get any more done for this world?

Of course I have more. I've just posted the information on Elves, Drow, and Half-Elves. I still have Human and Tielfling info. Some information on Druids, Warlocks, and Psionics. Some of the gods are detailed. Some of colonies have descriptions. Some important locations have details. Two legends are written out. Notes of my adventures are written down. Most are not very detailed but the starting adventure is. Some monsters are written up.

The Halflings, Humans & Tieflings information isn't as long as the others.

Dragonborn is in the 5E SRD. I guess I could use that name instead of dragonkin now.

New World: Deities: Gracos details one pantheon found in my game. Each has a channel divinity feat which will be detailed later.

Are you trying to avoid SRD names?

No. When I started writing it, I was thinking of trying to publish it. Dragonborn was not in the 3.5 SRD so I used Dragonkin instead. Now that it is part of the 5E SRD, I could change it back. There is a sidebar about it on the Dragonkin blog post.

New World: Deities: Mirtish details the official patheon of the empire. I've actually not even used this in my game.
