Best Campaign Settings for Shardminds?

Post by Dragonhelm » Fri Jun 09, 2017 7:22 am

I was wondering what campaign settings you guys thought the shardminds would be good in.

I can see them in Eberron with all the dragonshards and such. I could also see obsidian versions of them in Dark Sun.

Give me your thoughts, and let me know how you think the shardminds work in various worlds.

While there isn't strong Shardmind lore for Nentir Vale, the lore that we're given fits with Nentir Vale. As a "kitchen sink" sort of setting, Shardminds work reasonably well there.

Are these guys associated with the Far Realm?

If they are, then maybe they could be connected into a Thoon plotline, and be dragged over to anywhere in the D&D multiverse that the Mind Flayer's of Thoon travel to.

Planescape seems ideal.

Also, Mindshadows from the Mystic Vistas series might be appropriate?

Yes. They were part of the Living Gate that protected the world from the Far Realm, at least until the Gate was destroyed. Something to that effect. Been too long.

I found this description online:
Shardminds are sentient framents of the Living Gate, which once stood at the pinnacle of the intricate lattace of the Astral Sea. Beyond the gate lay the alien Far Realm, and the gate's destruction during the Dawn War resulted in the rise of the mind flayer empire. Though Ioun's power holds the portal closed, shardminds seek to rebuild the gate and forever cut off the Far Realm's ability to influence the world.
