Kozakura Samurai Family symbols

Post by Tonnichiwa » Tue Jun 11, 2019 2:39 am

I've noticed one of the most difficult things when trying to run a game based in Kozakura is trying to come up with the symbol for each Samurai family. While there are some symbols published in some TSR products, there aren't very many of them and most of the ones I've seen come from OA 4 Blood of the Yakuza.

So how have you dealt with this issue? Did you hire someone to create them? Did you ignore that aspect of Samurai families altogether? Did you find a resource for them online? I'm curious how others have done this. :?:

Never dealt with the topic before but it seems pretty easy to find them online: https://www.google.com/search?q=symbol+ ... 39&bih=785
Nowadays I think Google Image Search is a huge help to prepare adventures. Back in the days you had no means to find them so easily unless you had a specific book and could copy images from it..

Thank you Sturm. Online is a nice way to find them but I was also trying to see if someone had come up with some original non-historical ones as well.

Very good question.

I presume there must be a lot of real family symbols online.

Someone could just raid those for a home game. If someone was selling a book, they would probably need to make new symbols.

I'm guessing that looking at lots of real ones would be a good way to find out the sort of rules that fictional ones would need to follow.

I wonder if any other Asian campaign settings would have added some fictional samurai family symbols that are online?

There's a great source for real ones here. I haven't done fictional ones because I don't have a good grasp of the style or symbolism.

This site sort of lets you see the specific style and symbolism for creating them but I'm not really that good at art yet so have not made any of my own. I've also used the ones from the wiki commons as symbols for the different Samurai families of Kozakura. I've just changed around the symbols so the real ones don't go with their real families.

@Big Mac: The only ones I can find from different Asian based games are the five from the L5R series and I certainly don't want to use those. I would love to come up with about 300 of my own that are not historically based but that is incredibly difficult considering my art skills and the actual time I have to work on this stuff. I've been trying for a few years now to finalize the Kozakura based Birthright game but it's been difficult to get the time to do it all.
