[Malatra] The World Rests on the Back of a Toad

Soaring above the jungles of southern Kara-Tur, the Malatran Plateau has been invisible to the natives of Abeir-Toril for thousands of years. Most sages consider the area nothing more than an uninteresting wilderness.

[Malatra] The World Rests on the Back of a Toad

Post by Big Mac » Fri Jan 27, 2017 12:38 pm

One of the Polyhedron articles about Malatra has two Jungle Tales called: The World Rests on the Back of a Toad and Why the Shu Must Not Kill Each Other.

Does anyone think that the first story might be an indication that the ancient aliens, who came to Toril to "build" a refuge there, may have literally come from a world that sat on the back of a toad-shaped starbeast?

Interesting idea, but the story is a myth from the saru. The saru are notoriously accepting of all life forms, and will often try to talk to normal animals as they don't understand that they (mostly) will not be able to speak back. They are a race seemingly created by the ancients experimenting with various apes of the plateau through, so perhaps it is some sort of misunderstanding of the proto-saru. For instance they may have seen Fly-like spelljammers land some distance away and assumed that the world was eating them, and thus it must be a toad. Just a thought.

Clearly a myth.

Everyone knows the world resides on the back of a tortoise.

Myths often have some sort of element of truth to them, even if it is misinterpreted truth.

If the Shu don't have some sort of distorted memory of the former world of the ancients, then I wonder if the "back of the toad" could be the Malatran Plateau. If they have somehow seen through the magical barrier, perhaps they have seen that the Living Jungle is surrounded by a gigantic drop and have interpreted that as the land being toad shaped.

Actually, that makes a good deal of sense. We know that there are places where people can literally look over the edge of the plateau if they could get close enough. One such occurrence was when one of the domes was temporarily malfunctioning in the adventure Until the End of the World. The Saru, being arboreal, might have gotten some higher vantage point at some point and been able to see the distant landscape and interpreted it as being on the back of something. Or, it could be possible that there is some Ancient of other sculpture of a toad's form or face on the cliff walls surrounding the plateau that they have seen....I like this idea, as it need not have been on the plateau itself, maybe it was just a wayward idol from the River of Laughing Idols that was pushed downstream and is somehow lodged into the cliff leading to the Valley of Spirits. Since we are sure the Saru have been there before, it would be something they could have noticed.
again, just conjecture.....at least for the moment. :)

Thanks Apotheot.

I like to see ideas used in some sort of way...if possible. (Even if that way is some sort of strange propaganda spread by a mad cult or somesuch.)
