as far as I know they were colored as followed;
D20 Red, D12 Blue or green , D10 Black, D8 Yellow, D6 Red or white, D4 Green or Blue (diferent from D12)
There was as far as I know an earlier or later pure red series with a special pencil to self ink the numbers white
I have them too, but they are mixed with a gazillion other dices...ahem :oops:

My original from from the Moldvay Basic set was all green, from the Mentzer era of BECMI they were cheap light blue ones.

I've two basic sets and the colours were different from one another and neither is the set described by Robin, so I suppose the colour were random..

The multicolor sets were the originals included in the Holmes edition. These were also included in the first edition of Gamma World. The d20 had 0 to 9 twice; you had to color in the one set to differentiate, or some folk just rolled a d6 and went high/low for 1-20.

Here's a good blog about the original dice:

By the time of Moldvay and Mentzer, they had a usually monochrome set included... light blue, light green, light or dark brown being the most common. Sometimes the d10s were of an off-color from the rest. Included a crayon to fill in the numbers. These are the dice most folk remember as "dragon dice", from the blister pack sets sold separately (no relation to the much later "Dragon Dice" collectible dice game).

Here's an article about the Dragon Dice:
