What if.....

Post by Gravesguardian » Wed Mar 07, 2018 4:56 am

Bargle: Invisibility, Magic Missile, Charm Person & Sleep. 3 1st Level Spells equals minimum 6th Level Magic-User.
Aleena: Cure Light Wounds, "lucky to Turn Ghouls", unknown spell cast while Bargle is invisible. 3rd Level Cleric since 4th Level Cleric automatically Turn Ghouls.

So what if Bargle escapes and heads to greener pastures (Thunder Rift):

Zanzer Tem: 4th Level Magic-User (Energy Drain anyone?)
Adelle Kahoki: 2nd Level Elf (Princess? Can we saw Reincarnate folks?)

Now granted the blind 4th Level Cleric, Gorgo, says he was imprisoned by Zanzer Tem 50 years ago for trying to steal from him; but, that can be explained away.

#1. Gorgo isn't all there upstairs and just has the number of years mixed up.
#2. Bargle killed the real Zanzer Tem and is impersonating him.

Thoughts? Comments? Mobs to burn me at the stake?

I wonder if there is an iron ring relocation program for bad guys from Karameikos to Thunder Rift, when the authorities are hot on their heels?

(Btw. Bargle cannot be more than 4th level, since he has only one magic missile at the time of the encounter with the unnamed fighter and Aleena)

I noticed that, too. It's possible that the nameless fighter just didn't see the other arrows. I checked the adventure carefully and never saw mention of any scroll use. Also since Bargle mumbled the words to each spell, then they weren't cast from items.

Previous discussions on this topic have speculated that
a) he could have had multiple magic missiles, but dropped the others when the first one did the job.
OR
b) all the missiles were stacked on top of eachother so it only appeared as a single missile to the "Unnamed Fighter".

Of course, these were attempts to reconcile the descriptions in the adventure with the fact that Bargle is of a much higher level in Gaz1.

Another possibility is simply that he levelled up quite a bit since that encounter.

Perhaps someone can get Mr. Mentzer to settle Bargle's level at the time....and maybe Aleena's level too.

You never know, some folks might say any time is too soon when it comes to reminders of Aleena's death.

Something I was reminded of from another topic:

The problem w/ that is two-fold:
#1 Aleena cast Cure Light Wounds on the nameless fighter AND a 2nd spell to try and find Bargle. 2nd level clerics only get 1 spell.
#2 Bargle casts Invisibility (2nd level spell) on himself, Magic Missile (1st level) at Aleena, Charm Person (1st level) on the nameless fighter AND Sleep (1st level) on the nameless fighter. That's 3 1st level spells & 1 2nd level spell which places Bargle alot higher.
Since the nameless fighter does hear Bargle mumble the words to each spell, he clearly didn't use items/scrolls to cast them. Based just off the spells Bargle is KNOWN to cast, it places his level at 7th minimum. (7th level Magic-User has 3 1st, 2 2nd, 2 3rd & 1 4th level spell) One way to explain Bargle's lack of casting higher level spells during that encounter, is to say he used the higher ones BEFORE encountering Aleena & the nameless fighter.

Also of note: pg. 11 of the DM's Book in the Red Box set under Dungeon Level Three " This area is left entirely for you to design. It should include the lair of Bargle (Chaotic magic-user Level 5-7) and his guards (Charmed Ogres), plus his wandering decoys (Living Crystal Statues dressed like Bargle), and possibly some Dopplegangers as well."
Clearly Bargle used his higher level spells before facing Aleena & the nameless fighter.

I always seem to forget about that little mention of Bargle's level range.
