Bag of Devouring Homeworld?

Post by Seethyr » Tue Jan 30, 2018 9:50 pm

Weird title, I know, but there was an excellent article in a Dragon Magazine 271 that had an article called “The Ecology of the Bag of Devouring.”

The article posited that the bags were in fact mouths of creatures which could reach into other worlds. I’m not sure if this is my own imagination or from the article itself, but I believe they floated endlessly in dead oceans on their homeworld and evolved the ability to create these extensions in order to survive.

I have a few questions for the imagination. What might have happened to this world that it was otherwise dead? Are there other creatures that may be appropriate for the planet? Maybe elemental beings?

The dhour from the Planescape Monstrous Compendium Appendix II seemed to be another take on the bag of devouring, though for whatever reason it didn't make the connection explicit in their description. They dwelled on the Astral Plane, but they were said to have originated on a Prime world.

I'd make them come from the same world as the psurlons, I think, and have them worship Mak Thuum Ngatha. The dhour and the bags of devouring described in the Dragon article could be separate species from the same world.

That seems dead on. I have to catch back up on my psurlon lore. I remember there was a great 3e supplement that described them in detail. Lords of Madness?

Yes. Technically they destroyed their homeworld, though, according to the Dark Sun Monstrous Compendium Appendix II: Terrors Beyond Tyr, so having something of their homeworld survive would be a change.

This old thread at EN World mentions some other relevant content from Dragon, including the ihagnim (the astral creature who uses the bags to feed):

The Creature Catalog from that issue (Dragon #89) was omitted from the Dragon Magazine Archive CDs, but someone on that thread provided a link to a scan of the CC that's still a valid link.

And for what it's worth, the Pathfinder SRD includes an entry for an intelligent bag of devouring:
