[Western][Boot Hill] Boot Hill Back in Print!

Post by Havard » Sat May 26, 2018 11:39 am

Boot Hill 3rd Edition is now back in print format!

I know that Boot Hill has at least some fans here on The Piazza. Is anyone thinking about picking this game up? :)

No - I still have my 2E & 3E stuff - and we never used the 3E, strongly preferring to use 2E and fill in whatever we needed by adapting AD&D 1E rules (sparingly) where absolutely necessary.

That is interesting. What are the main differences between 2E and 3E?

What areas do you feel like importing rules from AD&D would be useful? :)

You want me to actually read the 3E rules? ;)

We were playing BH in the late 1980s, and I haven't done anything with it since - so this will take some time.
I'll get back with you next weekend on this.

Is Boot Hill compatible with D&D/AD&D? Or does it use its own system?

It uses its own system - 1E & 2E used a system where stats ran up to 100 - but there is a conversion section with advice in the 1E AD&D DMG (pages 112 & 113).

While I can't compare it to 2E (because I don't have 2E), I do have 3E. 3E stats run up to 20, and checks are successful if a d20 roll is < stat+skill, where most skills will start at only a point or two (starting characters get 6-10 skill points, and only half of skill points can be in combat skills). However, stats are generated on 2d10, and are weighted (2-5 gets +5, 6-10 gets +3, 11-14 gets +2, and 15-17 gets +1), so no stat can be below 7 except for Stature (reputation) and Luck, which are halved (rounded up) after being modified. Skills and stats can increase, but slowly. It takes 100-500 XP to advance a weapon skill (depending on its current level) and 500-1,500 to increase a stat. To give a partial example of the rate of advancement, characters gain 50 XP for surviving a gunfight, 30 for winning a brawl, and 5 per real-time hour of play.

Interestingly, it also has stats for horses, which are generated on 2d10 and modified by +5 for Strength, +2 for Coordination, divided by 2 for Intelligence, and normal for Luck (i.e. 2d10/2). They can potentially learn Herding, Cutting, Swimming, Gun (i.e. not panicking in a gunfight), and Tricks.

The book also has lists of famous historical and fictional gunfighters as well as characters from various house campaigns (including characters played by Jim Ward, Gary and Ernie Gygax, Tim Kask and Dave Arneson), some of which were converted from Dragon articles for prior editions.

Man, the last few days have been hectic, and it looks like the next few will be as well. I'll find time somewhere to go through my BH stuff, but I don't know quite when.

Sorry.

Ah, a play on Ben Cartwright, patriarch of the family in the TV show Bonanza!
He had 3 grown sons (each by a different mother), whose mothers had all died, before they headed reached Virginia City, Nevada and set up their ranch, which they named Ponderosa, after the tall pines found there (near Lake Tahoe, Nevada).

Theme song used in the series:
We chased lady luck, 'til we finally struck Bonanza.
With a gun and a rope and a hat full of hope, planted a family tree.
We got hold of a pot full of gold, Bonanza.
With a horse and a saddle, and a range full of cattle, how rich can a fellow be?

On this land we put our brand, Cartwright is the name, fortune smiled, the day we filed the Ponderosa claim.
Here in the West, we're livin' the best, Bonanza
If anyone fights any one of us, he's go a fight with me
Bonanza.

Hoss and Joe and Adam know every rock and pine, no one works, fights, or eats, like those boys of mine.
Here we stand in the middle of a grand Bonanza.
With a gun and a rope and a hat full of hope, we planted our family tree
We got hold of a pot full of gold, Bonanza.

With a houseful of friends where the rainbow ends, how rich can a fellow be?
On this land we put our brand, Cartwright is the name, fortune smiled, the day we filed the Ponderosa claim.
Here in the west we're livin' in the best Bonanza.

With the friendliest, fightingist, loving band, that ever set foot in the promised land
And we're happier than them all.
That's why we call it Bonanza...Bonanza...Bonanza...
Bonanza!

Alternate theme by Johnny Cash:
The claim we hold is as good as gold, bonanza
Hand in hand we built this land, the Ponderosa Ranch
Our birthright is this Cartwright bonanza
We here belong, and standing strong, wrong ain't got a chance

Day by day, work or play, ready side by side
Hello friend, come on in, the gate is open wide
Bound to be a fightin' free bonanza
Singing pines of boundary lines for the Ponderosa Ranch

Every tree and flower is part of our bonanza
The stars at night, the morning light, water in the branch
We ride along four men strong together
Every plain and ridge is our heritage Ponderosa Ranch

Day by day, work or play, ready side by side
Hello friend, come on in, the gate is open wide
Bound to be a fightin' free bonanza
Singing pines of boundary lines for the Ponderosa Ranch
Catapultam habeo. Nisi pecuniam omnem mihi dabis, ad caput tuum saxum immane mittam.
