Megadungeons of Mad Mages

Post by Dragonhelm » Fri Oct 12, 2018 2:48 am

The idea of the mad wizard with his megadungeon goes back to Gary Gygax's Castle Greyhawk and the mad wizard Zagig Yragerne. The Forgotten Realms has its own version with Undermountain and the mad mage Halaster Blackcloak.

So this is a trope of fantasy RPGs.

I'm curious what other megadungeons of mad mages are out there and which one is your favorite.

Straight off you can add Castle Blackmoor to the list - I think it predates Castle Greyhawk and is the real origina, that said it din't have the mad wizard (afaik).

In Mystara you can add Barrimoor and his undermining of most of Ylaruam.

Castle Blackmoor has actually had a wide range of eccentric figures over the centuries, many of whom still haunt the castle and dungeons as undead. The D20 Blackmoor line added Raddam Goss who would definitely count as a mad mage, even if he is a late additon to the canon. IMC I made Raddam Goss = The Bloody Baron which is an older character created by Dave Arneson that adds a bit more history to the character and closer ties to the dungeon.
In Mystara you can add Barrimoor and his undermining of most of Ylaruam.
That is another great example. I would love to see a fan sourcebook detailing Barimoor's Caverns with Egyptian and Arabic fantasy flavours mixed with Nightmare themes.

Allen Varney created a megadungeon in space for SJA1 Wildspace. But it was mad beholders rather than a mage that created it.

Frank Mentzer's megadungeon in Aquaria is called Lich Dungeon. Eldritch Ent has published the first two levels of that dungeon. Chagur the Lich is undead, but he might have been a mad mage when he was still alive.

BTW: There is a topic called Megadungeons in The Squishy Bits.

You could get a list of the other megadungeons from there and then ask if any of them have mad mages or similar characters inside them.

My own campaign setting has a version of this called the Labyrinth of Tsoldur, described in the Locales of [Whiteleaf] thread, at the top of one of the last couple of pages.
