Minaria (Divine Right Setting)

Post by Havard »

Noticed this setting from some discussions over at Dragonsfoot. Does anyone have any experience with it?
It is a fantasy setting based on an old TSR Board Game, called Divine Right

Oh, wow. Thanks, Havard, for the links to all the Minaria material. I really liked the "Minarian legends" series in Dragon Magazine, but didn't know anything about the setting other than what was contained there.

No problem Rip!

I didn't know there was so much material available either. It is going to take some time to process all of it :)

It looks like this website has unpublished material from Glenn A. Rahman. It was last updated in 2009, but maybe M Gemmell is still interested in this. Sadly, I see no contact details and the hamiltonrpg Yahoo Group (where his campaign was) is gone.

The main Divine Right (25th Anniversary Edition) Yahoo Group is still working. Maybe he hangs out there. (They have locked down the message board, so the only way to find out is to ask to join. :| )

From what SoundOutTheGalleon said in this post, the 25th Anniversary Edition has a CD with most (if not all) of the additional content from the Dragon magazines. So if you are not a "collector", I think it would be better to buy that game than the original.

Shardenzar posted the full contents of the CD:
Shardenzar at Dragonsfoot wrote:The CD is interactive and has the following sections; Minarian legends, Game history, Supplemental pictures, and Rules & replacement game pieces.

The legends section contains the following titles;
A life of trouble
About the Minarian legends
Al-Debar Desert hawk and the southern barbarians
Breis the unicorn
Fox and the shadowolves
Hatu Khagan and the Storm-riders
Kang and the eastern horsemen
Nonnus and the religion of Minaria
Ogsbogg and the ogres
Princess Daya and Naara
Schardenzar and the fairies of Minaria
Shucassam and the story of the southern plains
Sir Mortnoir
Tana and the pirates
The barbarian north and the youth of Juulute Wolfheart
The Bilge Rat and the mercenary fleets of Minaria
The Black Hand
The Black Knight
The chronology of Minaria
The Eaters of Wisdom and the Invisible School of Thaumaturgy
The Ercii and the Wandering People
The history of Elfland
The History of Ghem
The history of Hothior
The history of Immer
The history of Mivior
The history of Muetar
The history of Pon
The history of Rombune
The history of Zorn and the Goblins
The leviathans of Minaria
The monuments of Minaria
The origin of Minaria
The tribes of the north
The tribes of the south--the men
The tribes of the south--the non-humans
The Trolls

there ya go.

Jeff
Grodog printed a list of stuff from the Dragondex, but I can't really tell, from that, if this CD has everything.

I did a search. This seems to be Right Stuf's official Divine Right 25th Anniversary Edition page. There is an errata PDF, for anyone who manages to buy a copy of this. There are also three downloads of Glenn Rahman's versions of the rules.

I'd love to get my hands on this setting, but it doesn't seem to have a link on Amazon.

I can't find an ISBN for the product (which a lot of TSR boxed sets have). ISBNs make it a bit easier to find things on Amazon. When they are not available, Amazon uses something they call an ASIN. This is pretty old and pretty rare, so I'm not sure they will have given it an ASIN. Without an ISBN or an ASIN, Marketplace sellers can't add a copy onto the system. (I've actually complained a couple of times to the UK Amazon about certain things they don't list but the US Amazon does and nothing happens. I've even seen British Marketplace sellers advertising to send things to US customers on the US Amazon, but not having an ASIN to sell them in the UK.)

However, while I was looking, I did find a website called Divine Right Online and you might be interested in looking at that.

Hmmm......Kindle fire or Divine Right? Been wanting a tablet for forever. Kindle wins out (for now).

Thanks for the link though, Hav.

Np,

By the way this article by Jeff Rhient gives more information about the setting:

http://jrients.blogspot.com/2009/03/no- ... other.html

Perhaps a better place to start digging, from an RPG perspective would be those old Dragon Mags (ca #34 to 57).

Apparently there was an expansion to this game called Scarlet Empire:
Starting in 1997, Glenn Rahman designed an extension to his fabulous game Divine Right. Scarlet Empire took place in a different period in that game's world, and further to the south of the original map. It was designed as a stand alone game that could also be played in combination with the other one. The campaign game pits most of the players against the one playing the Scarlet Witch King.

If you liked Divine Right, you'd like Scarlet Empire -- everything that made the first game great is also present in the other. Mercenaries, special locations, diplomacy, magic, etc.

Scarlet Empire was supposed to be published by Excalibre Games and made it as far as the advanced play-test stages, but the publisher hemmed and hawed and tried to cut costs, so much so Glen eventually gave up in disgust. A very few play-test copies are in existence as a result.
There is a map you can find through the link above.

I just noticed this. Do you think the rights have reverted to Glenn Rahman? Given the advances in Print on Demand publishing, perhaps this is something that he could put out himself now.

Scott Casper (Scottenkainen on Canonfire) has an article on Canonfire called An Overview of Oerik, which uses Minaria for the Sundered Empire.

I'm not sure how easy it would be to fit Minaria in with Chainmail or Chronicles of the Black Moon, but it is great to have options.

I realize that I'm six years late to this conversation, but I thought you might be interested in the definitive source of DR-related RPG materials. Michael Gemmell is the hero who put in the years of research and design, and Glenn Rahman--DR's creator--has declared Michael's work to be canon. The original site vanished mysteriously several years ago, but the Wayback Machine remembers all...:

Wow! Nice find, McCrackan! (Both in resurrecting this thread that I didn't know existed AND especially the Wayback Machine link!)

....and WELCOME to the Piazza! :D

Awhile back I obtained many issues of The Dragon in PDF format, and in exploring the older issues I'd not ever seen before, I catalogued many, many things that piqued my interest. The Dragon's series of articles on Minarian Legends was one of them:
#27, p.19. Design Notes
#34, p.4 – 10. Special Divine Right Section: Making a Great Game Greater
Changes from the Designer —Glenn Rahman . . . . . . . . . 4
Second Edition Rules —Mike Carr . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 5
The History of Muetar —Glenn Rahman . . . . . . . . . . . . . 6
Ambassador Cards —Jon Foster. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 7
The “Rest” of the Rule Book —Tom Wham . . . . . . . . . . 8
For Your Minarian Merriment —Ed Greenwood . . . . . . . 9
Other Variations on the DR Theme —Victor Selby . . . . . . 10
#36, p.20. The History of Immer .
#37, p.13. The History of Elfland.
#38, p.18. Mivior.
#39, p.12. Juulute Wolfheart .
#41, p.22. The Trolls.
#42, p.18. The History of Pon.
#44, p.82 The Black Knight .
#45, p.41. The History of Dwarves.
#46, p.14. Minarian Variants:
Settling Special Siege Situations. p.14.
An Occasional Ambush Adds Flavor to Combat. p.15.
For Your Playing Pleasure... p.16.
The Men Are Awaiting Your Command, Sir. p.16.
But Sir, They Just Can't March Any Further. p.17.
All Barbarians Aren't Played the Same Way. p.18.
#46, p.19. Minarian Legends: The Black Hand.
To my knowledge, I believe this list of Dragon articles on Minarian Legends is complete.

We now use the term "lore" to refer to the Minarian Legends (ML) series and the bits of fiction that are found throughout the rules. The complete ML collection exists on PDFs on the CD-ROMs that were included in the second edition of DR, AKA the 25th-anniversary edition. Glenn is also in talks with a publisher to have the complete ML published in book format, possibly with a yet-to-be-written companion piece for the yet-to-be-published sequel to DR: Scarlet Empire, set in the continent immediately south of Minaria.

Most of the add-on rules referred to in your list, DD, have either been incorporated into the official rules or into the Junkyard, my humongous collection (about 100 pages!) of unofficial optional rules for DR that were written by Glenn, myself, and other players. The Junkyard exists in various editions all over the web.

There was another thread somewhere that I mentioned this, but I can't find it right now.

There is a Divine Right computer game (the wargame itself) in development that is expected to be ready the end of this year or early 2020.

Yeah, we'll see how that develops (so to speak). But you can already play DR1 and DR2 online for free--just go to the Files section of https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/Div ... tGame/info and select How to get PYDR.pdf.

Behold the Necromantic powers of The Piazza! I was looking at Divine Right in BGG and wondered if someone had done a setting with it. It led me here. Really like the map.
