[BRP][Glorantha] Who has played?

Post by Havard » Sat Jan 07, 2012 7:36 pm

RuneQuest Settings, RuneQuest Editions, BRP Settings, Elric & Eternal Champion, Call of Cthulhu, HeroQuest, Glorantha

Image

Glorantha is the setting created by Greg Stafford and first appeared as an RPG setting in 1978 for RuneQuest 1st Ed. While RuneQuest has had many different settings published for it over the years, Glorantha is without a doubt the most famous. Although this site is mainly about D&D worlds*, how many of you have ventured into Glorantha?

BTW check out the sale where you can get Glorantha pdfs for 1$ a piece that I posted about over here: viewtopic.php?f=48&t=7953

:)

*=Although I guess with 13th Age coming out for Glorantha now, I guess that almost makes Glorantha a D&D Setting too? :P :ugeek:

So I am the only Piazza member who has played in this setting? :)

While I never GMed RuneQuest (unless you count my ElfQuest campaign), I have been a player in several Glorantha campaigns using RuneQuest, Pendragon RPG and HeroQuest/Hero Wars as different systems for the setting. We had one long campaign where we played Knights from Loskalm. This is as close to traditional medieval fantasy as Glorantha can get. Most of the campaigns were focused on the followers of Orlanth (Heortlings) though, who are more of a mix of Vikings and Scotsmen interracting with various Bronze Age cultures.

The Temple of Demogorgon blog had some interesting thoughts on RQ/Glorantha flavor recently.

Who can resist a setting with Duck PCs?

I am more and more convinced that the Realms really need ducks and vindictive tapirs. With that, Drakar och Demoner and the grey box I should get the perfect campaign going.

Unfortunately not; I never saw the Morokanth until I started reading Glorantha-containing supplement,s but they can of course be transported as is into DoD from RQ,. Probably a good thing, if we had known of them when we started gaming I cant see anyone playing anything else.

That's one thing about Glorantha I am not happy with actually; the increasing seriousness that made strangeness's like the ducks, Morokanth and intelligent baboons seem a bit out of place. I would have preferred that the setting had continued in the "weird" direction, but it seems like that inclination disappeared somewhere along the way.

Yeah. My GM presented Glorantha in a very serious and even dark manner. He did include a group of Ducks once, but I suspect it was only to make me happy. :)

Fantastic! Thanks Havard.

By any chance is that included in one of the Mongoose Publishing Glorantha books? It seems quite similar to the Conan map.

I think so. I noticed that it details Glorantha's 2nd Age, which hasnt been touched on much outside the Mongoose line (yet) AFAIK. I did notice some homage to the Avalon Hill era (font) so that had me confused for a few seconds.

There is Mongoose book called: Glorantha - Second Age. It implies there was a first age. I'd like to know history of Glorantja, where should I begin search. Also, how does an excellent game King of the Dragon Pass fits in?

I am not expert on these things, but I believe the First Age is a mythical past. The most used setting for Glorantha is the Third Age. Mongoose did get the lisence to developing the Second Age, which I believe was not really all that well developed before this.

I believe King of Dragon Pass (Computer Game) is set in the Third Age. An updated version of the game can be purchased here.

I tried one time to play a Runequest II campaign set in Glorantha, but my friends weren't intrigued about the setting at that time.

Also I really liked King of Dragon Pass on my iDevices

Glorantha is clearly one of those settings where you can play up the weird stuff if you like. OTOH, running a fairly standard Orlanthi Campaign in Dragon Pass should not be too intimidating.

I didnt realize King of Dragon Pass was available for iPhone/Pad before you wrote that Nevermore :)

I play Glorantha! More wild-and-woolly than the inner-circle Gloranthaphiles prefer these days.

I don't play or run Glorantha any more, mainly because I feel that I have used up the rather limited space of Dragon pass and Prax that the official supplements tend to cover. I still fervently hope that the new owners Moon Design will stray beyond those overly well-trodden fields one day, but I guess not in the immediate future.

I echo the earlier post about latter-day Glorantha taking itself too seriously - this was always a gonzo setting to me with ridiculous creatures and anachronisms galore. I only Tippexed out ducks from 3rd edition onwards (replaced every reference to "duck" with "goblin"), I was fine with them until Greg came up with all those silly names for everything. Durulz, indeed!

I do like the “Gateway” approach as seen in the Judges Guild modules, especially Duck Tower. They don’t necessarily eschew anything “Gloranthan” — they still heavily feature all the RQ2 monsters, for example, and even often feature cults from Cults of Prax (Humakht, Orlanth, etc.), as part of the assumed flavor of the game. They nevertheless tend to presuppose a light, D&Dish game of exploration. That’s also why I love Griffin Mountain, which at its heart is the Gateway Campaign Setting. It’s the product that best fulfills D&D’s promise for sandbox play, even though ironically it is not technically a D&D product.

Yes, the JG adventures were great for dropping into either Glorantha or another game world entirely, and they were flexible enough to fit in a variety of locations. I used the City of Lei Tabor all over the place from Prax through Dragon Pass and well west of the Holy Land.

I was just talking to a friend of mine about Glorantha, last night, and she pointed me to the official Glorantha website where they have Gloranthan Community Map Page, with several good maps on it.

I just got invited to reread this topic, after displaying my lack of knowledge of Glorantha.

How much stuff is there for Glorantha vs a D&D campaign setting like Forgotten Realms or Mystara?

How many editions of RuneQuest or other rules has Glorantha been published under? How has that changed the campaign setting? Have there been any big Glorantha changing events between editions (like FR's Time of Troubles, Spellplague or Sundering)? Is there any sort of market for "old school Glorantha" and is it any different from the latest products (is RuneQuest 6 still the latest)? Or can you mix and match everything from all editions?

Lots of questions!

There is more for Glorantha than for those D&D worlds. Some of it isn't directly gaming material.

They're writing a 7th ed of Runequest now. The 4th ed was never published. There are also more freeform games, Hero Wars and Heroquest, basically two different editions of the same game, and then I think yet another edition without a name change.

The setting moved geographically, and over the years the main timeline has advanced somewhat without much real effect. However, under Mongoose they actually produced a line that took place in a prior age, providing real setting changes.

Old school Glorantha was just Kickstarted and will all be available again. The 7th ed of RQ will be backwards-compatible.

Happy to elaborate...
