[Kickstarter]Bones 5 from Oct 1st to Nov 2nd - NOW LIVE

Post by night_druid » Sat Jul 27, 2019 5:59 pm

If you missed it, like I did (not fond of Reaper's page redesign), its been announced that the BONES V kickstarter will begin Sep 5 and run til Oct 5.

Unfortunately for me, I can't say I have a high level of enthusiasm for this one. Can't imagine why (stares at huge pile of unpainted BONES ;) ). I may not jump in on this one, but I do have a small wish-list of things that would get me excited :)

Hobgoblins - surprisingly lacking in Reaper. I want Oriental style ones, of course :)

Townsfolk/Pirates/Bandits/Cultists/Berserkers - I could use more of these. Especially bandits/cultists/pirates.

Weresharks - Reaper has a few weresharks in their line but only one in BONES. A buddy of mine came up with an awesome idea for a pirate ship ran by weresharks.

Oriental Adventures - I sorta want a whole expansion devoted just to this. Samurai, ninjas, monsters, demi-humans, etc.

Giff/hadozee/Star Frontiers - I could see them part of a Chronoscope expansion. I may just have to wait to get them individually.

Male Thief/Ranger models - unfortunately I have very few usable ranger/thief models for my PCs.

Monsters - A few more critters in the 3-10 HD range. Owlbears, sphinxes, manticores, and the like.

From the previews I've seen thus far, it looks like two expansions will cover the following - underwater (Eye of the Deep, Marid) and Oriental Adventures (Ogre Magi). My interest is starting to go up...:)

If they actually include more anthropomorphic hippo-men (i.e. giff) I might actually buy into this.

From what I've gathered thus far, there are at least three expansions:

An underwater expansion with a fish-like marid and an eye of the deep

An oriental adventures expansion with an ogre magi

A pirate ship expansion, probably with a full crew in a similar fashion to the ghostly barge from BONES 4.

Bones 5? I missed 2 whole kickstarters. Not that I had the money, or the time, for them. Still, glad to see this line expand, its my go to for "hey, i want to learn to paint on something I can't ruin" which I still have a ton of. I still have stuff from the original kickstarter that I haven't even looked at.

I second more Weresharks, since you can't really customize Bones beyond paint, i need a couple different ones to complete my Street Sharks gang. I also wouldn't say no to some mounted were rats to dress up as martian mice.

I love bad 90's cartoons.

From a discussion I had with BigMac:

Me: I have so many unpainted minis. I really don't need more BONES.
Reaper: PIRATE SHIP!
Me: Well played Reaper, well played.

Its eerie how it looks like the BONES V expansions are pretty much everything I want. Since I never really made my wants for BONES public until 1 month after their announcement and I don't visit their forums to register my demands for the next kickstarter, there is only one logical, rational explanation: Reaper has hired mystical witches to read my mind! They're trying to bewitch me! :o

That is certainly a compelling argument, especially as I am working on a Pirates of Pugmire campaign...

How popular is that going to be? :?

Aquatic miniatures would be useful for the Plane of Water (in Planescape) and water worlds (in Spelljammer), so it would be nice if this sort of campaign had support, but it does seem like an underated niche of roleplaying.

I know that Dragonlance has an underwater subsetting (Watermere) but not many people talk about it.

Is there anything out there that is big, that might have a fanbase that pushes demand for more of this sort of stuff?

That would be good. And like you said earlier Asian-style verions of demi-humans and other humanoids would be useful.

I know some folks complain about Greyhawk, Dragonlance, Forgotten Realms and Mystara all being similar (based on European mythology) but there is a lot less support for minis for various other cultures and environments.

You can do some stuff with different painting techniques, but you do need some minis with armour, weapons and tools appropriate to different cultures.

If Bones includes oriental adventures elves, with specialist Asian weapons, that might also work for Chainmail's Ravillan dueling societies. :)

I've not bought into any of the Bones Kickstarters. ;)

If it wasn't for Night Druid getting excited about Bones, I probably wouldn't know anything about the cool stuff each one had.

I didn't realise that Bones minis were difficult to modify. Do they shatter if you try to cut off arms and repin them?

Are there other companies out there making things like weresharks and wererats?

I watched a couple of the Reaper livestreams on their youtube channel. It is surprising Reaper isn't putting more info on their homepage.

A small note, but Warcraft is currently in its "Underwater" expansion, so maybe Reaper is trying to cash in. ;) I have to imagine underwater would be as popular as some of the other expansions they've done in the past. And no guarantee its underwater; it could be elemental planes. I'm just taking a guess based on two models they've revealed thus far; they could very well be part of different, unrelated expansions.

On a guess, probably similar in size to the ghostly barge. Maybe 2' long? Purely guessing, i have no idea how big they're making it.

The softplastic isn't really good as being cut and re-pinned. At least, not with the smaller ones. I suppose the larger ones with thicker limbs, like the Wereshark, would be easier to work with, but I am way to lazy for that.

the shows are Street Sharks, which is kids turned into mutant shark / whale people, and Biker Mice from Mars, which is pretty much what it says it is.

Received an order by Reaper last week. Their new dark grey resin is much better than the soft white one. It's harder than the D&D minis by Wizkids. Probably easier to modify a model if you want to.

From the latest Reaper Livestream, they only showed off two models*, both from one of the expansions. One was a wizard in what looked to be a stylized roman toga, the other a female archer/amazon in a Greek/Roman style toga or dress. From the hosts comments, they alluded to some manner of "ancients" expansion (Greek/Roman/Egyptian).

* Personal note - Reaper, this thing is only a month and a half away, would it kill you to show off a little more? :P

Latest Reaper Live video: link.

Some interesting revelations: a samurai Sophie (Succumbus/Tiefling), _several_ merfolk, sahaugin baron, saurial(s?), a quartet of pirates, and a baby(?) godzilla ( :o ). And a life-sized giant space hamster at the 42-minute mark? :ugeek:

A previous video also revealed an oriental dragon, too.

So my personal guesses -
* An Oriental Adventures expansion
* An underseas expansion
* A pirate ship with crew add-on.

Sigh. Damn you, Reaper. Just when I thought I was out, they drag me back in!

According to the guys on the podcast, it'll be about 4 inches tall. Looks kinda like a baby godzilla...a ferocious one, not that nightmare-fuel abomination Minilla. ;)

Reaper Live - Bones 5 preview

Go to the 15:00 mark to skip over the test pattern (good grief why do they leave that in?)
The 36:00 minute mark is where they reveal the core Bones 5 initial set of minis.
* 49 models for $120. One undead giant, two dragons, 18 kobolds, and an assortment of other models. Fair start. Probably one of the better starts they've done.
The 38:50 mark - three things they want - pirate ship, titan, and dire hamster (hmmmm, who do I know who that last one would fit? ;) )

Countdown to the kickstarter starting point has begun. Little less than 5 hours 30 minutes until it officially begins, which is noon central. I don't intend to jump right in, but it will be fun to see how many add-ons will be unlocked in the first hour or two.
