GAMA Show 2018 : DD5e sale numbers

Post by shesheyan » Wed Mar 14, 2018 1:05 pm

Quote : From Stan Shinn just posted a rumor that a 5e Spelljammer product is coming, over at the D&D 5e community on Google+:

Other news from the seminar:
— 2017 was the best year for D&D ever in terms of sales
— Year 3 of D&D sales is stronger than their first year
— Actual play streaming is a key driver of D&D’s success, with 9 million users watching D&D on Twitch
— 8.6 million Americans have played D&D in the last 12 months (they did not give stats for overseas) /quote

A lot to digest in those numbers. It's very encouraging to invest in this edition at this juncture. Do these numbers include products in DMs Guild and also all the old product PDFs on Drivethru ? If yes what would be the portions compared to the official 5e products ?

Here is a link to Stan Shinn's original post for anyone curious.

And here is a link to the Piazza discussion about the Spelljammer rumours: Mark Price Spelljammer hint at GAMA show.

Would be interesting to know how those figures compare when adjusted for population growth and economic growth. It's easier to sell more books when there are more customers with more money than in the 1980's

Its also easier to get people into the game by giving away the 5e basic rules on line + Amazone cut throat prices when compared to retail + 5e Starter Set is extremely inexpensive at 20$US.

I wouldn't knock it too much. Even keeping up with the early 80's sales by unadjusted value would be an accomplishment.

In this day and age, people are making the time to play a pen and paper RPG. Leisure time pursuits have never had so many other things competing for your time and money.

Very true. The ubiquity and quality of video games, the streaming of increasingly specialised TV, and the plethora of sporting activities available now makes it incredible that proper RPGs get a look-in at all.
