[Frostgrave variant] Rangers of Shadow Deep

Post by shesheyan » Wed Sep 12, 2018 5:30 pm

For those who liked Frostgrave and its B/X flavor the author is working on a new derivative system that will allow co-op play with up to 4 players or solo play.

« Rangers of Shadow Deep uses some of the core Frostgrave mechanics, but takes them in a new direction. First off, Rangers of Shadow Deep is designed to be played either solo or co-operatively, with up to 4 players all taking on the roles of rangers. Also, while the game is still very much a table-top miniature game, it takes one more step in the direction of role-playing.»

Wasn't the original Frostgrave set up so that all players had to be Wizards?

No. It was a 1 vs 1 wargame. No co-op. No role-play. The wizard was the leader of his war band. He could hire a wizard apprentice if he chose so. The other members of his party were hired hands - fighters, thugs, rangers, thieves - to help him survive on his quest to find the lost arcane knowledge in the ruins of Frostgrave.

I knew that wizards came into it somewhere. :)

Rangers really is a 'cooperative' wargame in more than one sense. With one minor exception, no one was paid to work on Rangers, it was done as a collaborative project. Barrett Stanley and Steven Meyer-Rassow especially helped out more out of friendship than any expectation of major return. Hopefully, enough people will be interested in the game, that we can convince them that it is worth their time to keep helping out!

Here are some of things currently being worked on for Rangers (and no, I have no expected dates for any of them).
• A Kindle Version
• A Print on Demand Version
• A German Edition
• Temple of Madness (a new supplement that expands the role of spell casting, and contains a 4 scenario mission). »
