D&D 5e Race Design Book on sale $4.86AUD

Post by Coronoides » Sat May 04, 2019 1:02 am

Hi all,
The race design book detailing the system I use for my projects here is now on sale at the DM’s Guild. Just $4.86AUD gets you access to the system that helped me design the Council of Wryms conversion, Age of [Ostoria], Spell Weaver PC race, and [Green Isles] British Fairy tales setting. See link in my signature.

This is an analysis of 5th edition D&D’s underlying mathematics and system for referees to create new races and feats for their campaign settings. There are 37 new races in short form including minotaurs, centaurs, and pixies. This book benefits from three years of playtesting and development. Hundreds of hours of mathematical analysis of evidence from the Players’ Handbook, Dungeon Masters’ Guide, Elemental Evil Player’s Companion, Volo’s Guide to Monsters, and the Tortle Package has determined how canon races are built enabling you to build quality new races for your players.
There is also an optional section that contains rules that are NOT part of the reversed engineered system.
Rules from the PHB and DMG are applied in new ways to open up a greater diversity of PC races.

You forgot to say it was called The Tinker’s Toolkit Race Design.

Have you ever done the same sort of mathematical analysis on earlier editions of D&D?

Short answer, no.

Long answer. THe only other editions I have any real experience with are 1e and 2e. I started playing AD&D in about 1985 (RPG in 1984, another long story its in RPG Review). As I learned and DM’d we naturally started to tinker with new races and such. My first efforts were probably pretty bad. However after playing for over a decade I have an encyclopaedic knowledge of the rules, understood some of the depth (like relationship between xp to advance and power), and had very very good intuition about what would be balanced and what wouldn’t. I also playtested a lot.
(Ok at my tram stop...)
... So during my AD&D era I was learning game design, worked with deep knowledge and intuition, so didn’t need to do an analysis and did not have access to a computer to do the kind of analysis I did for 5e.

The other thing is 5e was very rigidly designed by a small team. AD&D wasn’t like that at all. It kind of evolved from houserules used by a lot of folk over many years. While 5e has a rigid structure under the hood to be reverse engineered, AD&D not so much.

When I came to 5e, after a long period dissillusioned with D&D, I really liked the game but chaffed against the lack of options. I wanted specific new races for my Green Isles project and I didn’t want to wait year while I built up knowledge and intuition. It was pretty obvious to my designer eye how carefully constructed the game was so to fast track my ability to create a lot of races I did the analysis and reverse engineered WOTCs system.
