Getting Started with Dark Sun

Post by enderxenocide0 » Tue Jan 05, 2016 6:06 pm

Hi guys! I've been intending to start reading Dark Sun material for some time, but never really knew where to start. Can you recommend where I may wish to start reading about the setting? I'm not concerned with mechanics at the moment, but rather the story and feel of the setting. I once began reading Troy Denning's novels, but didn't get too far. It wasn't that I didn't enjoy it (because I did), but I simply had too many other books that gripped me more quickly. Would that be a good place to begin? Or should I start with a campaign setting sourcebook? Alternatively, perhaps the Burnt World of Athas has a good summary or other posts have been made detailing a general outline of what to expect from Dark Sun. Really, I'm game for anything. I'd love to start digging into new settings and Dark Sun is high on my list.

PS. If there happens to be a good Dark Sun fan wiki, I'm game for that. I rather greedily devour campaign setting knowledge when I get into it, so wikis are wonderful for sating my plot-specific appetite

The books would be a good starting point, as they describe the campaign metaplot.
The boxed sets are also a good read, although obviously more game-oriented.
Note that many Dark Sun source books are pretty light on rules contents anyway.

The Wander's Journal from the first boxed set is a good starting point.

There were short stories that were included with some of the boxed sets and modules. I thought they did a good job of setting the tone. There was one about a hidden oasis I especially liked.

I found myself a copy of the Wanderer's Journal and read it... I love this.

Probably the best abstract of the whole setting is the 4e book Dark Sun Campaign Setting.

Well that's easy. The story of Dark Sun is "the world was destroyed", and the feel is "everything sucks forever".
