What happened to the Messenger? And why?

Post by Lord Torath » Sun Feb 28, 2016 3:47 pm

I know that WotC got rid of the Messenger, the "Comet Halley" of the Crimson Sphere a while back (came once every, what, 45 years or so?). Does anyone know why they got rid of it, and what happened to it?

From what I understand, the plan for the Messenger was that it was a space ship of halflings that landed (or crashed), causing the huge earthquake towards the end of the DS line. The line came to an end before they did anything with that storyline.

That's the rumor I've heard from several sources (none official, mind you), so I don't know the validity to it.

For what it's worth, I've heard this too.

The Messenger comet has existed since the first Dark Sun boxed set.

The Messenger as a halfling ark-ship is a bit more murky. I want to say it came out of a Gen Con at some point, either told by one of the Dark Sun team or a Q&A session or some-such thing.

Kevin Melka mentioned it in an interview at Athas.org, although his idea was only a trio of Blue Age halflings to bring back life magic.

The Messenger was intended to be a vessel with three rhulisti on board. Two were nature-masters (good) and one was a nature-bender (evil). The idea was for these to help propagate life-shaped items throughout Athas and re-seed the setting with the nature-master/nature-bender conflict. From a Q&A with Kevin Melka, final DS product lead:

Q: What were the plans for the Messenger?

A: With the creation of the lifeshape items and the whole halfling-original-race plotline, we wanted to expand that a bit more to round out that portion of the world . What the Messenger was proposed (from me) to be was a “spaceship” of sorts for three halfings from the Blue Age who escaped the Brown Tide. After the events in Dregoth Ascending the Messenger would soon after crash into Athas and three powerful halflings were supposed to bring back lost life-magic and knowledge back to Athas in hope of rebuilding the world. I think we also toyed with one of the Halflings being a life-bender. That was the basis of the idea.

Q: So, no space halfling invasion?

A: Ya know, I have no idea where that whole idea came from. I think long ago I may have mentioned the whole Messenger idea to someone, and from there it sprang into some absurd Spelljamming Halflings Invasion Plan 9 from Outer Space – which in my opinion is a bit ridiculous. Every time I used to see that it gave me a chuckle.

Huh. You know, I think I'm glad they stopped Darksun before it got that far. If anyone's going to "save the planet," it should be the PCs.

Thanks for all the information!

Eh, I'm OK with having it be just three halflings, who would act as teachers and sponsors for PCs. My biggest problem is the elimination of the Messenger altogether.

I can't see the point in removing Messenger, either.

But did they do that, or did they just fail to mention it?

It was in the 4E Dark Sun Campaign Setting, p.15

"Every 11 years an eclipse occurs, and every 45 years the Messenger—a comet that turns night to day blazes through the sky."

Small, unrelated point, but it tickles me to see "Crimson Sphere" used as the name for Athas' solar system so casually.

So WotC didn't actually "get rid of the Messenger" then. :D

I wonder if the Messenger actually is a comet or perhaps (if it is supposed to be some sort of spaceship) whether it is in a Hohmann transfer orbit between Athas and another of the worlds of the Crimson Sphere. If I could figure out the mathematics, that would give you a 45 year orbit, maybe I could work out which one of Night Druid's worlds the Messenger would be visiting, when it was not flying past Athas.

We need to get you onto the 5th Edition Dark Sun design team, so that you can make that name into canon. ;)

"Darkspace" and "Sunspace", my first inclinations for the name of the sphere, were already taken. :P I suppose Athasspace (one "s" or two?) would be a possibility, along the lines of Spiralspace and Krynnspace (spheres named after a populated planet). But I'm happy with The Crimson Sphere. :D
