30 Days of Dark Sun 2: Preserving Vs Defiling

Postby Big Mac » Sat Oct 08, 2016 9:34 am

It's the Dark Sun 25th Anniversary and The Burnt World of Athas (aka Athas.org) is celbrating with "30 Days of Dark Sun".

Here is what Athas.org is doing for Day 2: 30 Days of Dark Sun 1: Preserving Vs Defiling.

Which spellcasting method do you like best?

Maybe I brought baggage from learning about other campaign settings, but I've always thought of Dark Sun wizards as being "normal" wizards or the "different" wizards.

I used to wonder if the preservers were the normal wizards, with defilers being the ones who were "cheating" and damaging the environment or if the laws of nature of Athas meant that all arcane magic was damaging and the preservers were putting in extra effort to avoid causing harm.

Defiling magic is one of those elements that make Dark Sun unique.

I also like Defiling magic. It made the use of magic unique, with a price to be really powerful. I exported defiling to my home setting because, even if evil, is a relly interesting concept.

I think for playing characters it's "socially" easier using preserving magic, especially at low levels, however this setting wouldn't be so cool without defilers!
So both styles are important: preserving is easier for PCs and defiling is perfect for NPCs.
