Elminster, lost prince of Netheril?!?!

Holy Mystra, I just had a epiphany. Ok, in my Netheril research, Ed's version fell about 500 years ago. In the early Realms material (prior to Making of a Mage), Elminster always claimed to be about 500 years old. That puts the dates in-line. Now, when I read Making of a Mage, the kingdom he's the lost prince of is a mage-dominated realm in the high forest, directly west of where he put Netheril, prior to Slade's work. I think his kingdom (some variation of the word "Atlantis", don't remember the spelling off-hand) sounds a bit similar to how he describes Netheril in Anauroch. It makes me wonder...did he originally intend Elminster to be a lost prince of Netheril, and had to adjust after his realms were mucked with? Its speculation, but it fits.

That's a very interesting insight. Perhaps it would be worth asking Greenwood.

BTW, I think that kingdom was Athalantar.

Athalatar's location always seemed odd to me. It was tucked in-between the High Forest and High Moor, at a time when the North was supposed to have been inhabited by barbarians and orcs. Yet El visits many highly magical locations...I kinda wonder if Ed really intended Elminster to be running around Netheril, not the Sword Coast ;)

Well, turns out I was mistaken (but my logic was sound, given the materials available). :)

What further information did you discover?

Not a whole lot. Ed's Netheril did have floating cities, but no ruling family, just tons of archmages exploiting the underclass "mundanes". Netheril did fall prior to Elminster birth.

I also learned that Ed bought Hackjammer and enjoyed it. That was a major ego boost there
