The Grand Dagmaggus

The Natchai believed their machinations to replace Shah Satyrbis with a demon had gone without notice. They had not taken one quiet man into their calculations; Dagmaggus the unassuming vizier.
Dagmaggus is high in the councils of the Green Emperor himself and had he not assumed his current watching brief in Caer Cadwen he would have undoubtedly risen to lead the Black Adders.
It seems the Emperor’s foresight did not fail him for now as if on a gilded serving tray, those heroes known as the Children of Destiny have just walked right into the throne room denouncing the Shah for a Demon! It is time for Dagmaggus to rid Caer Cadwen of the imposter and free the emperor from these cursed adventurers!
After a fierce battle he fled through the throne room doors. There being no immediate chase given he used his Misty Step to avoid trackers (bonus action to the foot of the spiral stairs to the north) the with the aid of Invisibility escaped into the serpentine labyrinthine ways of the palace.

Dagmaggus’ cover story — dark, tall and skinny with an ugly beak-nose — is just as cold as his boss. He carries out orders exactly but has a few designs of his own on his superior’s job, as well as dastardly plans for amassing a private fortune. His ruby sword sweats blood whenever a person of 10th level or higher is present who has aggressive designs on its owner. The “blood,”however, is poison (DC 16 Con or 6d6).

Well here you are in the luxurious seat of power at Caer Cadwen with it’s golden throne and magical mirror.
A town that was old when even the City of Spices itself was young,
the architecture here is unlike any other found in the empire. It’s twisting , maze like streets are narrow with the overhanging timber frames of the higher stories reaching out to each other across the cobblestone pavements below. Often no more than the width of a man’s outstretched arms these high curbed pavements are rarely cleaned and are strewn with discarded waste thrown from the windows above.
However despite its appearance Caer Cadwen is of considerable strategic importance and its loss would be hard felt by the Emperor controlling as it does river traffic from the metropolis to much of the outer empire.
You know that the locally levied troops are at best unenthusiastic and now with both Shah and vizier gone who can say what will happen to law and order? Perhaps they can be persuaded to open their gates to your forces? For it would make a fine stronghold south of the mighty Leander from which to do war at the very heart of Veridistan....

Clyw is frustrated. It seems the Grand Dagmaggus was well prepared for flight. He had followed the fleeing vizier into the labyrinthine passages that riddle the earth far below ancient Caer Cadwen whilst his friends had searched for the charmed Earendil.
However Dagmaggus had planned his escape well, leaving numerous false trails, traps and using many well hidden secret doors.
Finally giving up the chase the rogue stopped to drink from a strange fountain. Three heads, three female heads and a plaque....
The water from the fountain is clean and icy cold, refreshing him after his long chase in this stygian, subterranean realm and not for the first time he’s thankful for the gift of Elven sight bestowed on him by Cilborith. It is only as he’s about to return to the surface world that he notices the ship pictured on the plaque has a name. The Mull Kreen.

Review of session 72 (Tuesday 29th October 2019)

The three from the Mull Kreen

Players and their characters
Genghisdon with Earendil of Mitra.
Dreamteam playing Clyw a Rogue from the CSIO.
Icemaiden and Thebia, Amazon Paladin of Athena from Highhaven.
Bochi with Alkaia. Amazon Ranger of Sea Rune.

Events 0102 2/5/4448 - 0630 2/5/4448

Our reunited party wound their way back to the strange fountain far below the palace at Caer Cadwen. Here Clyw discovered the way to make the whole thing move back to reveal a dusty chamber with three bronze sarcophagi set into the wall opposite. Thebia’s holy senses detected undead beyond and soon with the aid of his Mage Hand Clyw had the coffins opened. Athena’s Paladin turned the unholy things and they prepared a barrage of fiery missiles. Except Clyw who’s keen eyes had detected what looked like a piece of crumpled parchment in the mouth of the central mummy and beyond this fellow the outline of a secret door. Snatching the parchment then retreating into the corridor to read it, the thief made himself scarce. The others began their attacks.
It was a short lived affair especially once Earendil caught the monsters in his Wall of Fire and very soon the mummies were all destroyed.
The parchment proved to be very ancient indeed (see note 1) almost 5,000 years old judging by the dates on it.
After a brief discussion they pressed on through the secret door and down some steep, stone steps. Here they fell foul of an acid gas trap but after much healing went on to discover a vast underground cave. The cave was surrounded by a glowing semi opaque curtain of light. Stalagmites and stalactites almost meeting as they dropped rich mineral deposits. Deposits that had almost engulfed the ancient ship moored at an underground dock beyond. But this wasn’t what captured their attention. For stalking around within was a huge beast. A thing of nightmare.

As the last line in the poem had promised. A thing of fiendish fang and hairy hell!

Note 1

Legible entries from the log of the Mull Kreen.

Third day of The Birthing 2572AOC

A fair wind follows us across the Churning Sea. It has been two days since we picked up the three strange ladies who seemed in such a hurry to leave the village of Tula (and paid much good gold to do so!).
Let us pray to Father Poseidon it continues.

Forth day of the Birthing 2572AOC

Faygus the nightwatch is missing. Unlikely he went overboard in such calm weather. Possibly Lacedons. I have trebled the watch.
Wind still to the north-west. Holding steady.

Eleventh day of the Birthing 2572AOC

Praise Poseidon! We have entered the mouth of the Leander. Seven crew now lost. Moral is low and I fear mutiny should this continue. Our passengers are rarely seen but came on deck as we drew close to the coast. They seem unconcerned about the disappearances, strange.
I must have a word with the galley. They seem remarkably well fed after two weeks at sea.

Review of session 73 (Tuesday 5th November 2019)

A Plot Night shocker!

Events 0630 2/5/4448 - 1700 2/5/4448

Earendil had read of such a barrier as this blue curtain before and informed the others that no magic could pass through it. So waiting until the great beast was far away from them they slipped through into the cave where Alkaia then shrouded them with her Pass Without Trace enchantment. They stealthily crossed towards the callcinated ship. Sneaking aboard they discovered an ancient journal within a magically protected chest. Reading it they learned much of the three witches of the Marmonmist and some of their plans regarding Mycr (to be posted separately). They also found within the journal a map giving directions to the witches lair deep within the swamp.
Creeping back to the entrance and safety they were suddenly possessed with the spirit of recklessness and decided to attack the mighty demon. Such a fight is rarely seen. The dice were all over and all in the favour of our champions! They played a blinder. At one point Earendil hurled himself as an attack of opportunity between the 20' tall 14,000lb charging Demon and poor Clyw who was about to get trampled. I gave him bugger all chance to say the least, never expecting him to make the roll. With his +1 bonus and disadvantage he still managed a decent score of 14. No problem. The demon had a +13 Strength modifier. I rolled a 1 and the Goristro was knocked sideways, missing his target and his attacks ! This was to signal his doom and in only 4 rounds they sent him back to the Abyss in style.
Well done guys. XP to come next week.
