The Grand Dagmaggus

The Natchai believed their machinations to replace Shah Satyrbis with a demon had gone without notice. They had not taken one quiet man into their calculations; Dagmaggus the unassuming vizier.
Dagmaggus is high in the councils of the Green Emperor himself and had he not assumed his current watching brief in Caer Cadwen he would have undoubtedly risen to lead the Black Adders.
It seems the Emperor’s foresight did not fail him for now as if on a gilded serving tray, those heroes known as the Children of Destiny have just walked right into the throne room denouncing the Shah for a Demon! It is time for Dagmaggus to rid Caer Cadwen of the imposter and free the emperor from these cursed adventurers!
After a fierce battle he fled through the throne room doors. There being no immediate chase given he used his Misty Step to avoid trackers (bonus action to the foot of the spiral stairs to the north) the with the aid of Invisibility escaped into the serpentine labyrinthine ways of the palace.

Dagmaggus’ cover story — dark, tall and skinny with an ugly beak-nose — is just as cold as his boss. He carries out orders exactly but has a few designs of his own on his superior’s job, as well as dastardly plans for amassing a private fortune. His ruby sword sweats blood whenever a person of 10th level or higher is present who has aggressive designs on its owner. The “blood,”however, is poison (DC 16 Con or 6d6).

Well here you are in the luxurious seat of power at Caer Cadwen with it’s golden throne and magical mirror.
A town that was old when even the City of Spices itself was young,
the architecture here is unlike any other found in the empire. It’s twisting , maze like streets are narrow with the overhanging timber frames of the higher stories reaching out to each other across the cobblestone pavements below. Often no more than the width of a man’s outstretched arms these high curbed pavements are rarely cleaned and are strewn with discarded waste thrown from the windows above.
However despite its appearance Caer Cadwen is of considerable strategic importance and its loss would be hard felt by the Emperor controlling as it does river traffic from the metropolis to much of the outer empire.
You know that the locally levied troops are at best unenthusiastic and now with both Shah and vizier gone who can say what will happen to law and order? Perhaps they can be persuaded to open their gates to your forces? For it would make a fine stronghold south of the mighty Leander from which to do war at the very heart of Veridistan....

Clyw is frustrated. It seems the Grand Dagmaggus was well prepared for flight. He had followed the fleeing vizier into the labyrinthine passages that riddle the earth far below ancient Caer Cadwen whilst his friends had searched for the charmed Earendil.
However Dagmaggus had planned his escape well, leaving numerous false trails, traps and using many well hidden secret doors.
Finally giving up the chase the rogue stopped to drink from a strange fountain. Three heads, three female heads and a plaque....
The water from the fountain is clean and icy cold, refreshing him after his long chase in this stygian, subterranean realm and not for the first time he’s thankful for the gift of Elven sight bestowed on him by Cilborith. It is only as he’s about to return to the surface world that he notices the ship pictured on the plaque has a name. The Mull Kreen.

Review of session 72 (Tuesday 29th October 2019)

The three from the Mull Kreen

Players and their characters
Genghisdon with Earendil of Mitra.
Dreamteam playing Clyw a Rogue from the CSIO.
Icemaiden and Thebia, Amazon Paladin of Athena from Highhaven.
Bochi with Alkaia. Amazon Ranger of Sea Rune.

Events 0102 2/5/4448 - 0630 2/5/4448

Our reunited party wound their way back to the strange fountain far below the palace at Caer Cadwen. Here Clyw discovered the way to make the whole thing move back to reveal a dusty chamber with three bronze sarcophagi set into the wall opposite. Thebia’s holy senses detected undead beyond and soon with the aid of his Mage Hand Clyw had the coffins opened. Athena’s Paladin turned the unholy things and they prepared a barrage of fiery missiles. Except Clyw who’s keen eyes had detected what looked like a piece of crumpled parchment in the mouth of the central mummy and beyond this fellow the outline of a secret door. Snatching the parchment then retreating into the corridor to read it, the thief made himself scarce. The others began their attacks.
It was a short lived affair especially once Earendil caught the monsters in his Wall of Fire and very soon the mummies were all destroyed.
The parchment proved to be very ancient indeed (see note 1) almost 5,000 years old judging by the dates on it.
After a brief discussion they pressed on through the secret door and down some steep, stone steps. Here they fell foul of an acid gas trap but after much healing went on to discover a vast underground cave. The cave was surrounded by a glowing semi opaque curtain of light. Stalagmites and stalactites almost meeting as they dropped rich mineral deposits. Deposits that had almost engulfed the ancient ship moored at an underground dock beyond. But this wasn’t what captured their attention. For stalking around within was a huge beast. A thing of nightmare.

As the last line in the poem had promised. A thing of fiendish fang and hairy hell!

Note 1

Legible entries from the log of the Mull Kreen.

Third day of The Birthing 2572AOC

A fair wind follows us across the Churning Sea. It has been two days since we picked up the three strange ladies who seemed in such a hurry to leave the village of Tula (and paid much good gold to do so!).
Let us pray to Father Poseidon it continues.

Forth day of the Birthing 2572AOC

Faygus the nightwatch is missing. Unlikely he went overboard in such calm weather. Possibly Lacedons. I have trebled the watch.
Wind still to the north-west. Holding steady.

Eleventh day of the Birthing 2572AOC

Praise Poseidon! We have entered the mouth of the Leander. Seven crew now lost. Moral is low and I fear mutiny should this continue. Our passengers are rarely seen but came on deck as we drew close to the coast. They seem unconcerned about the disappearances, strange.
I must have a word with the galley. They seem remarkably well fed after two weeks at sea.

Review of session 73 (Tuesday 5th November 2019)

A Plot Night shocker!

Events 0630 2/5/4448 - 1700 2/5/4448

Earendil had read of such a barrier as this blue curtain before and informed the others that no magic could pass through it. So waiting until the great beast was far away from them they slipped through into the cave where Alkaia then shrouded them with her Pass Without Trace enchantment. They stealthily crossed towards the callcinated ship. Sneaking aboard they discovered an ancient journal within a magically protected chest. Reading it they learned much of the three witches of the Marmonmist and some of their plans regarding Mycr (to be posted separately). They also found within the journal a map giving directions to the witches lair deep within the swamp.
Creeping back to the entrance and safety they were suddenly possessed with the spirit of recklessness and decided to attack the mighty demon. Such a fight is rarely seen. The dice were all over and all in the favour of our champions! They played a blinder. At one point Earendil hurled himself as an attack of opportunity between the 20' tall 14,000lb charging Demon and poor Clyw who was about to get trampled. I gave him bugger all chance to say the least, never expecting him to make the roll. With his +1 bonus and disadvantage he still managed a decent score of 14. No problem. The demon had a +13 Strength modifier. I rolled a 1 and the Goristro was knocked sideways, missing his target and his attacks ! This was to signal his doom and in only 4 rounds they sent him back to the Abyss in style.
Well done guys. XP to come next week.

Assault on the palace!

Events 0630 1700 2/5/4448 - 1930 2/5/4448

Following a search of the demon cave the party made their way back through the labyrinth to the secret door into the palace. Without a second thought Earendil stepped through boldy exclaiming at GODLIKE volume that he was here to take over the palace as Mitra's chosen and would spare anyone who didn't resist.
The servents fled in terror and the trained palace guards lept into action!
Clyw brought down a magical fog, the girls repaired in the opposite direction to take cover in the rooms beyond whilst Earendil walked sedately into the mist declairing his offer of redemption relying on his sanctuary spell to keep him safe. Unfortunately three burly soldiers resisted his enchantment and he made no effort to resist when they overpowered him.
Two rounds passed seeing Earendil, defiant and blasting his tormentors with holy radiance but still gagged and held hand and foot . Clyw, magically disguised as a guard charging out of the mist to rescue him and Thebia and Alkai making it to the foot of the stairs.

We rejoin the action at #9 on round 5.

Initiative order is

Clyw - 19
Thebia - 14
Alkaia - 14
Earendil -9
Guards - 5

Pacification of Caer Cadwen.

Events 1930 2/5/4448-2000 2/5/4448

Earendil struggles futilely against his tormentors whilst Clyw rushed forward (still magically disguised as a guardsman) and with some quick thinking sleight of hand set loose rope bonds around Earendil’s hands.
The captain of the guard appeared demanding to know what was happening and down below Thebia butchered more hapless guards in the conjured fog.
Alkaia stormed up the stairs just in time to strike the captain a viscous blow then everything changed.
Now partly freed Mitra’s High Priest summoned forth his guardian spirit lions. They ripped all about them to pieces (a roll of 46HP out of a maximum 48!) and this took all the fight out of the defenders.
It took some smooth talking but eventually the guards came on side and agreed to surrender both palace and city.
During the negotiations Alkaia had been searching the throne room and had discovered the legendary magical, all seeing mirror of Caer Cadwen.
More to follow on this.
XP total for this and previous sessions +6,000 each.

Review of session 76 (Tuesday 3rd December 2019)

Pheobe found, Grand Mitran Caliphate of Caer Cadwen founded.

Events 2000 2/5/4448 - 1200 14/5/4448

Much work was undertaken. Earendil abolished slavery at the end of a rope for those who objected. Among the freed slaves Thebia with Clyw's help find Alkaia's long lost shield mate, Pheobe and an emotional reunion took place.
Work was commisioned in several areas to improve the cities defence and to shape it in the image of a Shield Hall of Mitra. Reinforcments summoned to the city using a mixture of spells and their Orb of Morg. First came Hecate and her wolf riders, they shared news that the fearsome war machines were still in position along the Emperor's Wall. Then came Harlgrimn's Berserkers who got along famously with Alkaia, Thebia and Pheobe.
Next with much pageantry came Lady Rosmix and her silver armoured knights. She swore fealty to Earendil and the pair got to work securing the religious institutions within the town. Last came the Giants and their Blink Dogs. When all were asembled a great Heroes Feast was arranged and the city rejoiced in it's good fortune. Earendil accepted rule of Caer Cadwen by popular acclaim and declaired it a Mitran Caliphate.
Alkai had also noticed during her scrying that the Shaha of Port Targnol was planning a major offensive against Krak and his Gnolls at the Hradd ruins. Warnings were magically sent with an invitation for the Gnoll Lord to join them at Caer Cadwen (sent 11/5).
Clyw's attempts to sway the Half Orc, Agon-Tosh to form a spy network fell on deaf ears though with the roll of a natural 1.
Some discussion was had as to the nature of Mycr but the only choice reflecting this was not to invite the Zealots into the force to defend Caer Cadwen.
The joyous news that the Red Reavers had been defeated was received from Ernason Blue through the Eye of Morg on the morning of the 14th. Clwy, Alkaia nd Thebia's position as the Lords Grimalon was now secure.

For the record, those that hold the Orbs of Morg are:

The Party
Redon/Actun
Anstruth/Fair Folk of Shelterhaven
Lady Rosmix/Mitra
The Elf Kings/Wood Elves
Harlgrimn/Berserker Wild Tribes.

XP 0 with the new test rules.

Well antics and hidden Natchai temple.

Events 1200 14/5/4448 - 1500 14/5/4448

Whilst discussing an amnesty for spell casters, Pheobe, Alkaia's old shield mate told them of the couple who had held her in thrall. One of whom was deffinately a witch.
She led them to the elegant riverside town house where she was held in slavery. It looked incongruos among the run down warehouses and such that surrounded it. The front had all been boarded up, a few days previously according to the chandler next door.
Clyw broke in around the rear but set off a Glyph of Warding when he opened the back door. They decided to look for another way in and found it at the bottom of the well situated in a grubby little square east of the house. The slippery walls of the well proved too much for Thebia who went flying down the narrow shaft. Galant Earendil for some reason dived in afterwards and landed atop her with a splash and much cursing. Alkaia's water breathing spell saved them from drowning in the deep water and eventually they hauled themelves out into the narrow tunnel.
A further glyph trapped secret door led into an exquisitly decorated bedroom. But our heroes had little chance to explore when they were set upon by the waiting forces within who watched through peep holes from the next room having heard the party splashing, cursing then detonating the runes.
Things did not start well. Spirit Guardians flittet around them and a Cone of Cold struck three of them. Alkaia thrust her spear through the tiny hole and wounded the witch then Clyw Misty Stepped into the chamber with their tormentors only to be paralyzed by a Hold Person spell. Thankfully quick thinking Earendil used Stone Shape to bypass the locked door and Thebia dispelled the troublsome spirits.
A raft of spells and blows later saw the Witch vanish but the rest of the Natchai laying dead.
We shall join them here next week.

Experience 1033XP each.

Djinn released!

Players and their characters
Genghisdon with Earendil of Mitra.
Dreamteam playing Clyw a Rogue from the CSIO.
Icemaiden and Thebia, Amazon Paladin of Athena from Highhaven.
Bochi with Alkaia. Amazon Ranger of Sea Rune & her shield mate, Pheobe.

Events 1500 - 0900 15/5/4448

The cultists dead or gone our heroes began the looting process. Many rich and tasteful things were discovered along with a magical helm of Comprehend Languages.
It was this searching for magical loot that led Thebia to touch a glowing blue sphere on a shelf. It split assunder releasing the mad whirlwind within. An insane Djinni whirling it's huge scimitar struck at Thebia then at Pheobe. It would have been curtains for Alkaia's friend but for Earendil's healing magic.
Whatever else was in the chamber was reduced to matchwood. All except a small zinc pot with a red wax seal.
They returned to the palace to commune with Mitra and to reflect upon their experiences.

All done for another year. We restart in January 2020. Thank you all for playing!

City State of the World Emperor 2020 (BCCC 4450 and beyond)

Firstly thanks to all who have made this game such fun to DM.
Over the last two years you have achieved a substantial amount considering your humble beginnings.
You have established a free Caliphate under your rule at Caer Cadwen on the very borders of the heartland of Empire. You have emboldened both the Giants of the Yakin Ley and the city of Tel-Qa to rebellion, raised the Tharbrian tribes of the Berserker Wilds and built a solid alliance between the elven peoples of Actun, Shelter Haven and the Elsenwood (saving High King Redon from assassination at the hands of the Emperor’s feared Black Adders to boot!)
Add to this you have confounded the Natchai in their imperial ambitions confining them to the hinterlands and the city of Grimlon. Uncovered ancient secrets regarding the Witches of the Marmonmist and slain the legendary monsters Sliant and Koses. Not too shabby at all!

I’m going to move things along date-wise before we recommence in the new year for two main reasons.
Firstly the upheavals your actions have caused will have lasting repercussions on the fabric of Veridistan and beyond. Your new realms at Grimalon and Caer Cadwen will require time to develop. The ripples will also cause changes in the wider world and these too will take time to become evident. It’s up to you to decide where to go from here, how you react to the complex new balance of power will have lasting effects on the Wilderlands.
Secondly you have several potential leads to follow up. They have been accumulating as your adventures progressed and often been left hanging as the political storm has buffeted you along. Should you wish to fill in the down time exploring some of these it will allow a little welcome relief from world events and give you a chance to explore your rapidly expanding personal powers too.
I’ve pretty much tried to give you free reign in your movements but have to admit that this is becoming more challenging as your levels increase. Writing new material each week for higher level characters in 5e is not easy and is compounded by the Wilderlands sandbox approach where I often have no idea where you will head off to next. So these are my suggestions.

I shall take your actions and those plans you have already posted regarding development of your holdings along with any other instructions you issue before 31/12/2019 and prepare a detailed report on how things stand in the world before we kick off again in the New Year. I shall also make a list of the loose ends you may want to follow up during this off screen downtime. Adventures I can prepare in much greater detail with the extra time this reconciliation will provide.
These would be my suggestions but of course the choices are solely yours to make.

1. Discover and root out the evil cults remaining in Caer Cadwen.
2. Follow up the map leading into the Marmonmist Swamp and discover more of the Three Witches and their schemes.
3. Explore the strange goings on around Nho and the Bitter Ridge with Falsum the Black Dragon.
4. Prosecute the Natchai further rooting them out of Grimalon and taking the battle to their gruesome leaders. Maybe even finding out who this mysterious figure White Fire is?

By my reckoning by the time one or more of these have been accomplished you guys will be at Epic (level 16+) level and ready to move into the end game phase fully appraised of the facts you need to choose your path into legend and fulfil the destiny of Prophesy!

Post by Chris107 » Mon Jan 06, 2020 3:17 pm

We restart my CSWE campaign tomorrow with a small time hop (290 days) up to the start of BCCC4449.
Between instructions from the players, dice rolling for random events and outcomes of existing strategies the following occurred during this down time.
To summarise the rebel kingdoms of Caer Cadwen and Tel Qa have not fared well. Being essentially land locked and surrounded by enemies has cut trade to almost nothing and action from loyal imperial forces added to the drop in production in goods and food-stuffs due to the sudden abolition of slavery and increase in those under arms has had a powerful negative effect on the regions economy.
On the contrary Veridian forces, after bitter initial defeats have rallied somewhat and are now bringing their vastly greater numbers and economic might into play.
Not that the Green Emperor’s position is all roses. Far from it. The Natchai have allied with the Amiondel Elves and snatched Gommorath Province. Proclaiming no lesser figure than White Fire, Hautulin Seheitt’s missing son their champion and leader. 4449 has not started well for the emperor either as the Imperial Overlord has refused to submit his tribute.
All in all it there should be interesting times ahead.

5/4448 Mitran Caliphate decreed in Caer Cadwen, slavery outlawed, Phoebe rescued. Patrols from Mitra’s Shield Hall begin in Grimalon at the request of Thebia.
Veridian Navy blockades the Leander proscribing the Trident Gulf to any but imperially sanctioned shipping.

6/4448 Hakeem Greywolf returns to Ahyf with the skulls of the Red Reavers.
In Caer Cadwen work begins on both a new temple of Mitra and a Mitran Shield Hall. Training begins of the released slaves and King Krak arrives with the remnants of his war torn tribe.

7/4448 Renovation completed on Clyw’s water front town house, recruiting begins for likely spies.
Shah Abdu Inslar, ruler of Lyoophiath Province retakes the Targnol Plains.

8/4448 Amazon fighters from Highhaven arrive at Skaney. Work begins to rebuild using a cadre of male slaves brought with them along with local labour.
Druids from the Giggabolt Mountains reach the Elsenwood.

9/4448 The Grey Elves withdraw to Shelterhaven after gifting much of their power in a ceremony with the Druids to restore the Elsenwood. The Elven alliance is broken.

10/4448 Amiondel Elf corsairs from Ludgates land at Nho. Declaring alliance with Grimlon and securing the southern areas of Gommarath Province. Shah Drong Dirkah proclaims independence from the Empire and allegiance to the Natchai.

11/4448 Hautulin Seheitt invokes the right of conscription swelling the ranks of his southern armies. He decrees that forts be built along the new south-west frontier of the empire forming an iron curtain from Port Targnol to the Bestial Barrens.

12/4448 The evil tribes of the Berserker Wilds swear fealty to Hautulin Seheitt. The flames of war spread in the Berserker Wilds. Harlgrimn Ironsides leaves Caer Cadwen to lead his people.
Clashes between Amiondel forces and those of King Redon.

13/4448 Work completed on the Shield Hall at Caer Cadwen.

14/4448 Unrest in Caer Cadwen and Tel Qa as supplies run low. No market and no slaves working the fields begin to tell.

15/4448

16/4448 Tel Qa attacked by Elephland forces loyal to the Green Emperor. Although repulsed the harvest is lost. A hard winter lays ahead for the allies.

17/4448 Whitefire emerges from the shadows as the new Supreme Champion of Natch-Ur with his capital at Grimlon. His identity as the long lost son of the Green Emperor becomes public.

18/4448 Shah Pahrrib Fu, ruler of Shardis Province unleashes the Shardani (the nomads native to Shardis Province, the Bestial Barrens, and points south and west.) These wild horsemen scream into southern Smyrsis Province adding to Tel Qa’s woes.

19/4448 Clyw’s intelligence network receives urgent news of increased disappearances from the back streets of Caer Cadwen during the Year’s End Celebrations.

1/4449 The Invincible Overlord fails to give tribute to the World Emperor.
Earendil’s divinations reveal some plot by a cult known as the Violet Dawn is active in a part of the sewers beneath Caer Cadwen.

Review of session 79 (Tuesday 7th January 2020)

The Violet Dawn - Sewers entrance.

Players and their characters
Genghisdon with Caliph Earendil. High Priest of Mitra.
Dreamteam playing Lord Clyw of Grimalon a Rogue from the CSIO.
Icemaiden and Thebia, Shariffa of Skaney. Amazon Paladin of Athena from Highhaven.
Bochi with Lady Alkaia of Grimalon. Amazon Ranger of Sea Rune.

Events 0700 - 0730 3/1/4449

They steared their little boat close to the stone jetty under the foul smelling sewerage pipe and following the winding, slimy steps crept within the broad, dripping spout. It wound upwards until a set of iron rungs led our chaps into the sewers system proper. Clyw was first up and his entrance startled a giant Shrieker causing it to emit a roaring screech! The others began climbing too, with all but Earendil making it to the top as the picture unfolded.
Before them was a large sluice pool, thick with feculence. From the centre of this sprang up the massive fungus. Hovering around it were three floating globes which seemed to have waving eyestalks atop them. They didn't have much chance to see more however as from the cracks in the walls and floors emerged a number of Shadows. Battle was joined in earnest with all our heroes loosing strength points and taking necrotic damage. Their plight did not improve when, attacking the Shrieker casued it to lash back with fronds of Violet Fungi.
Earendil saved the day with an explosion of daylight which withered the shadowy undead but also exploded the Gas Spores! The damage started to mount up.
Clyw headed west along the paved pathway to a small bridge only to see a number of Ghouls charging towards him whilst the rest battled the flailing magenta fungi. Clyw emptied his little sack of marbles onto the bridge in an attempt to slow down the approaching undead. Two of which plunged into the sewers 10' below the rest came on. Our Rogue was dismayed to find a Ghast among their number and fell to wretching at it's putrid odour. Things looked grim. But fresh from destroying their own foes his friends rushed to the rescue. Thebia and Alkaia killed two Ghouls with bow and Javelin then mighty Earendil was among them. The power of Mitra issuing forth to blast them with holy might! Destroying all but a couple who the girls soon mopped up.
Finding a moment to breath they cast their healing magics and we will rejoin them here next week.

XP to follow.

Our heroes pushed on deeper into the sewers. In a vaulted chamber they once again saw a hole high up but bipassed it to attack Ghasts in a room beyond. It was whilst fighting here that a dreadful horror descended behind them, a Death Tyrant! It's ryestalks flashed multihued beams that caused havoc and terrible wounds to the party. They scrambled to the saftey of the rear of the room they had entered with only brave Alkaia giving chase as the horrid thing levitated back upwards into what now became clear was a circular passage running north to south 40' above them. Her arrows found their mark but the retreating creature disintigrated a prepared area above and dumped a huge pile of rotting violrt spores down upon the happless Ranger making a terrible mess of her hair.
After more healing they decided to head north in the hope of finding some way to confront the floating monster. What they found however was a chamber of nightmares.
A huge area with grates in the floor over which, hung from grizzly, barbed chains hung various victims. Ghasts tormented some, pulling forth their entrails and feeding them down through the gratings. Watching over this from the far end was a slight figure all cloaked in mud brown robes. With a cry Thebia turned one of the Ghasts and the others charged in. Alkaia shooting arrows, Earendil letting fly fiery globes and Clyw sneaking along the south wall only to be blown back 30' as three Eldrtich Blasts struck him full on. The GHasts then attacked rogue and paladin and we leave at the end of round 1 with Thebia needing to make two DC10 Con saves.

Initiative order is.
Thebia - 18
Earendil - 17
Clyw - 10
Alkaia - 9
Hooded figure - 6
Ghasts - 4

Next Game Tuesday 28th January.
