Review of session52 (Tuesday 16th April 2019)

Across the plains of Targnol and into the Night Mother’s Tomb..,

Players and their characters
Genghisdon with Earendil of Mitra
Dreamteam playing Clyw a Rogue from the CSIO
Icemaiden and Thebia, Amazon Paladin of Athena from Highhaven
Bochi with Alkaia. Amazon Ranger of Sea Rune.

Events from 0001 11/3/4448 - 1930 11/3/4448

Crossing the plains of Targnol under cover of darkness the party made camp 5 miles north of the Hradd Ruins. Watched over by spirit lions and Mr. Peewit as they slept they were ubdisturbed and after a late breakfast set off for the coast, arriving close by the dreadful barrow by early evening.
Clyw opened the magical, pitted iron gates with the key he had stolen on their last visit and they crept inside.
Earendil brought the daylight with him, Mitra’s radiance surrounding him and pushing back the hungry darkness of the tomb. Exploring the SW side of the excavation they discovered a stable with the rotting bones of six Great war horses and past this a statue showing the Satrap as she must have been as a woman. Returning to the central chamber they discussed their next move at length.
It was decided that they would take the fight to the White Witch. Opening the bronze doors they saw a long, dour room, the ceiling, high above held up by two mighty pillars. Six stone doors led off, three a side and a seventh could be seen at the far end. With some trepidation they entered, cheered somewhat by Mitra’s guardian lions stalking around them and by his glowing daylight shield. Half way to the northern exit the attack came. Three Wraiths rose up from the floor and made to lay their spectral hands upon Thebia, Earendil and Clyw but we’re unsuccessful, blinded as they were by the holy illumination. The heroes set about them without mercy even when a second wave came upon them; one blocking Clyw’s way as he attempted to flee to the entrance door.
It was now that the Night Mother arrived. Mounted on a terrible, spectral horse she leapt straight through the wall to the north and an intervening column to attack Earendil but Mitra’s brilliance once more saved the day!
It was then that Thebia called upon her Goddess to banish these wicked shades and her power waxed full, they all turned and fled; hounded to the last by mighty blows and the dark queen herself bearing Alkaia’s Hunters Mark shrieking into the gathering gloom.

The Night Mother (The White Witch)

In life The Satrap Jasminjn.
The Lady Jasminjn has haunted this land since she fell in battle, fighting side by side with Demogorgon himself! Now the White Lady rises only one day in the month, when the moon it at its darkest.

Medium, unique undead, neutral evil

Armor Class 18
Hit Points 133 (18d8+36)
Speed 0 ft., fly 60 ft. (hover)/Spectral Steed 120ft. (hover)

STR 6 (-2)
DEX 16 (+3)
CON 14 (+2)
INT 17 (+3)
WIS 18 (+4)
CHA 18 +4)

Saves Dex +6, Wis +7

ACTIONS
Life Drain. Melee Weapon Attack: +9 to hit, reach 5 ft., one creature. Hit: 24 (4d8+4) necrotic damage. She then adds this number to her own Hit Points but can never exceed her total maximum of 133. The target must succeed on a DC15 Constitution saving throw or its hit point maximum is reduced by an amount equal to the damage taken. This reduction lasts until the target finishes a long rest. The target dies if this effect reduces its hit point maximum to 0.
Create Wraith. The Night Mother targets a humanoid within 10 feet of it that has been dead for no longer than 1 minute and died violently. The target's spirit rises as a Wraith in the space of its corpse or in the nearest unoccupied space. The Wraith is under her control. She can have no more than six Wraiths under her control at one time.

Damage Resistances acid, cold, fire, lightning, thunder; bludgeoning, piercing, and slashing from nonmagical attacks not made with silvered weapons
Damage Immunities necrotic, poison
Condition Immunities charmed, exhaustion, grappled, paralyzed, petrified, poisoned, prone, restrained
Senses darkvision 120’ ft., passive Perception 14
Languages High Veridian, Common, Abyssal & Ignan.
Challenge 15 (13,000XP)

Legendary Resistance (3/Day): If the White Witch fails a saving throw, she can choose to succeed instead.

Lair Action.
On initiative count 20 (losing initiative ties), the White Witch can take a lair action to cause the following magical effect.

• She targets one creature she can see within 30 . A crackling cord of negative energy tethers the Night Mother to the target. Whenever she takes damage, the target must make a DC 15 Constitution saving throw. On a failed save, she takes half the damage (rounded down), and the target takes the remaining damage. This tether lasts until initiative count 20 on the next round or until the Night Mother or the target is no longer in her lair.

Bereft of Body. The Night Mother can move through solid creatures and objects as easily as a mortal creature moves through fog.
The Night Mother is malice incarnate, concentrated into an incorporeal form that seeks to quench all life. She is suffused with negative energy, and her mere passage through the world leaves nearby plants blackened and withered. Animals flee from her presence. Even small fires can be extinguished by the sucking oblivion of her horrifying existence.

Incorporeal Movement. The White Witch can move through other creatures and objects as if they were difficult terrain. She takes 5 (1d10) force damage if she ends her turn inside an object.
Sunlight Sensitivity. While in sunlight, she has disadvantage on attack rolls, as well as on Wisdom (Perception) checks that rely on sight.

Undead Commander. She can make an undead servant from the spirit of a humanoid creature that has recently suffered a violent death. Such a fragment of woe becomes a Wraith, spiteful of all that lives.
When they emerge from her tomb to do battle, life and hope shrivel before them.
Undead Nature. The Night Mother doesn't require air, food, drink, or sleep.

Review of session 53 (Tuesday 23rd April 2019)

Deeper into the Tomb of the Nightmother.

Players and their characters
Genghisdon with Earendil of Mitra
Dreamteam playing Clyw a Rogue from the CSIO
Icemaiden and Thebia, Amazon Paladin of Athena from Highhaven
Bochi with Alkaia. Amazon Ranger of Sea Rune.

Events from 1930 - 2030 11/3/4448

The White Witch and her surviving Wraiths had fled. It was mooted by Alkaia that the party give chase however she was out voted and a search of the chamber began. It was soon found that all the doors here were false. Merely plaster over bricked up entrances. Earendil deciphered the High Veridian letters above each door and it was decided they made up the names of those who followed her into death.
Tunnelling into the northernmost tomb that bore the name of Jasminj they found an exquisite white marble sarcophagus bearing her image in life. This was protected by powerful necromantic magic, eventually dispelled by Mitra and allowing more magical tunnelling to take place into the tomb itself. Within stairs spiralled downwards into a circular chamber. The western exit tunnel blocked by magical darkness.
This time it was Thebia who called upon Athena to dispel the Stygian enchantment but what it revealed was most dangerous. A Symbol has been scribed into the far wall which (following some truly awful saving throws 1,2 & 5!) filled all but Thebia with a deep sense of hopelessness. To make matters worse it also relesed another terrible automomotum of the Veridian Eye upon them.
All alone bold Thebia battled it as it did terrible damage to her friends with fiery blasts and a stabbing lance. Finally smiting it until it exploded into pieces.
Healing was needed. Join them here next week.

Night Mother Destroyed!

Players and their characters
Genghisdon with Earendil of Mitra
Dreamteam playing Clyw a Rogue from the CSIO
Icemaiden and Thebia, Amazon Paladin of Athena from Highhaven
Bochi with Alkaia. Amazon Ranger of Sea Rune.

Events from 2030 11/3/4448 - 0600 12/3/4448

Our heroes determined to search the lower level thoroughly and investigated the catacombs before finding a black mirror image of the sarcophagus above in a large chamber to the south west. This too was protected by powerful warding spells but these were dispelled by Athena's Paladin....
Meanwhile up above in the 90 minutes that had elapsed since she fled the Night Mother had not been idle. She and her surviving Wraiths had rode hard for the Hradd Ruins where they knew they would find fresh lives, even if they were just common Gnolls. The Wraiths drained six of them, turning them into Spectres whilst the Night Mother drained another six fully, restoring her own hit points.....
Whilst the party was in some confusion as to what to do below Peewit Caru gave the alarm that she had returned, with great haste they gathered in the large chamber, casting what protective magics they had left between them and trembling in terror. The first wave to attack was the ethereal Gnolls, these were blasted by Thebia's powers or slain on the Star Spear. Behind them came a mounted Wraith and two more joined in the fight from the floor. A desperate battle began Then She came.... Screaching her hatred she poured all her spite and malice against Earendil and he would have fallen too but for the mighty power of Mitra who deflected her viscous blows. Even wreathed in her black necrotic web and taking wounds delivered upon the White Witch unto himself he managed to survive the worst she could throw at him until a flurry of blows from spear, rapier and sword sent her spirit to Hell for the final time. Leaving only the cursed jade diadem behind.
After communing with Mitra who advised that they not touch the wicked jade head band they set to looting the riches of the ancients. So huge was the hoard that outside the sun was rising by the time they were done.
Until next week.

Walking into the Dragon's Den.

Players and their characters
Genghisdon with Earendil of Mitra
Dreamteam playing Clyw a Rogue from the CSIO
Icemaiden and Thebia, Amazon Paladin of Athena from Highhaven
Bochi with Alkaia. Amazon Ranger of Sea Rune.

Events from 0600 12/3/4448 - 0900 13/3/4448

With much effort they heaved their treasure to the shoreline and conjured their magical boat. Spending the evening dreaming about how they would spend it and wondering what should be their next move.
Clyw was insistant that they pay King Krak the Gnoll a visit to try and convince him to fight on their side; not withstanding that they had hardly parted on good terms the last time they had met, nor that Kappa the Druid had warned them to stay away.
Unfortunately for them the Green Emperor's forces had arrived there days before and had made a pact with them already.
Gnolls greeted out heroes who asked for audience with great King Krakk, messangers were sent and they ambled leisurly through the town.
Krak and his imperial guests could not believe their luck and arranged the warmest of welcoming parties for them. They were shown into the great hall, oddly empty, and they waited for the great brute to arrive. Alas it was the dapper, silk clad form of Cyrus Hardhand, Immortal and feared warrior, betwixt two shield-bearers that appeared. The archways to the hall were soon crowded by Krak's crossbow armed guards and battle was joined.
Thebia tried to Command the mighty Cyrus to surrender but he shrugged off her spell (nat 20 save) so she charged into the nearest Gnolls. The Immortal responded by casting his own Mirror Image enchantment then his men hurled javelins at Earendil who in turn tried to use his new Divine Intervention ability to bring the fight to a swift conclusion. This too failed so he had to satisfy himself bringing a glowing holy weapon into being to Cyru's henchmen.
Clyw was up next and he too tried to enchant Cyrus with no better luck, slipping into hiding (badly) behind the throne to end his turn.
Things were not looking good but soon took a turn even worse. The little Dwarven Druid Kappa summoned a magical wall of stone splitting the party in two. Boys to the east and girls to the west. Alkaia, quick a a flash fired arrows at him, hitting with one but not enough to break the tough old dwarfs concentration.
Cowardly Krak remained hidden but the crossbows of his cronies twangged and five bolts struck the ranger full on, almost putting her down. And it is here in this dire circumstance that we leave them until next week.

Fall of Cyrus, King Krak freed and an alliance made with the Gnolls.

Players and their characters
Genghisdon with Earendil of Mitra
Dreamteam playing Clyw a Rogue from the CSIO
Icemaiden and Thebia, Amazon Paladin of Athena from Highhaven
Bochi with Alkaia. Amazon Ranger of Sea Rune.

Events from 0900 13/3/4448 - 2200 13/3/4448

Well what a fight! Too many highlights to mention but it was a bruised and battered party that finally overcame Cyrus.Earendil had been down once, revived by Alkaia who herself had been kept alive by much healing from Thebia who in turn took a massive battering from Cyrus. Each of them on single figure hit points until Clyw put his rapier through the Veridian's black heart.
Kappa called off the Gnolls (he had taken no part in the battle other than to cast then dispel his own stone wall) and a sheepish King Krak revealed that he had been at the mercy of the Empire soldiers and forced to make his guards attack.
A feast was thrown (the party politely passing up the chance to consume the flesh of their vanquished foe) and the girls persuaded King Krak to help them battle the imperial forces at Sully should they advance. Kappa said he would scout out the situation before returning to his own people. His debt to the Gnoll King payed in full.

The Empire is coming! Underwater gallop to Nho and one strange Hobbit.

Players and their characters
Genghisdon with Earendil of Mitra.
Dreamteam playing Clyw a Rogue from the CSIO.
Icemaiden and Thebia, Amazon Paladin of Athena from Highhaven.
Bochi with Alkaia. Amazon Ranger of Sea Rune.

Events from 2200 13/3/4448 - 2355 14/3/4448.

The celebrations went on late into the night. Both ladies becoming quite tipsy and attempting to outdo the other with their witty compositions. It was a tearful King Krak that went to bed that night having been taught the value of friendship and good hugs.
They also learned from Kappa the Dwarf Druid that the Natchai were regrouping north of his home in the Gigabolt Mountains at their temple Obelisk of Feigh a fearsome place sequestered behind the Barlrog haunted Yahg Khosha, Demon Valley and the ever hungry Hyando River.
When Kappa returned from his eagle-form scouting they also learned something of greater urgency.
Sully was all aflame and a host of Veridian soldiers were marching up the coast road in their direction, crucifying the Mitran rebel’s as they came. Worse still another strong Imperial force from Port Targnol was heading to cut off any escape.
The Gnolls began packing up their stuff with promises to do their best to buy some time for the party.
Kappa, with a farewell wave and a promise to meet again once more took wing and headed home.
Our heroes then took the unexpected step of using Alkaia’s water magic and they and their steeds galloped into the stormy waters of the Trident Bay!
Soon they were making their way along the inky-dark sandy bottom. Earendil’s Light had been quickly extinguished when it attracted hoards of small fish with the threat of larger ones to follow. Without their Elf sight they would have been lost.
Hours passed by as they made their way south-east across the bay. Safely going under the strong fleet that guards Gheulost Island, the source of the Empire’s military might, the red metal, Carbellium and onwards towards the east coast of Gommorath Province.
They were almost there when they had the strangest of encounters. They noticed a handsome young Hobbit swimming along easily beside them. Dressed only in rags and sporting a golden earring in his left ear. The fellow hailed them and a strange conference began deep under the sea.
It would seem the Hobbit, who gave his name as Brogo had some knowledge of the prophecy in which our heroes were players. Children of Destiny he called them and gave them some knowledge of the fell Wyrm, Falsom. After sharing his soggy sandwiches the little fellow swam off and it was only as he was disappearing from view that the keen eyed among them saw him take the form of a splendid Gold Dragon!
The moon was rising as they finally emerged from the breakers, like drowned pirates onto the muddy beach at Nho. It had been six months since their last visit and they found the company at the Black Dragon Inn much subdued. However their return seemed to cheer everyone up and as the pine scented, strong brown ale was consumed the place once more came to life. That is until Earendil asked about Falsom...
Silence fell. Many made their excuses to leave or returned to their corner tables to silently brood. With a curse Mitra’s Cleric left the Inn to walk in the moonlight leaving his chums to apologise to Dwilla Loderbottom the buxom landlady.
Until next time....

Ettins! Hunt for missing Hobbits.

Events from 2355 14/3/4448 - 0305 16/3/4448

Clyw spread around some gold and found out that the villagers had been making sacrifices to the Black Dragon for centuries. He also learned that the Glacis Ettin's attacks had become both more frequent and more wide ranging of late leading the party to surmise that perhaps more than one creature was making the raids. They also heard that a Hobbit family had been taken from the small wood-cutters village of Inwyn.
The morning (of the 15th the Sea Rune festival of Throstlecock) saw our chaps commissioning boxes of caltrops and long pikes from the local blacksmith then setting out into the forest to hunt down their quarry as evening fell.
At the edge of the woods was a small stream and beyond that the fens proper started. It was midnight when they got there and Clyw set about using his Minor Illusion cantrip to produce the sounds of animals in distress, hoping to lure the Ettin into traps they had laid. By just past three in the morning this worked. Rather too well as two of the huge creatures came barreling in from different directions. One was badly wounded by the party's traps and a Spike Growth spell from Alkaia and was easily finished off by the others. The second, initially stopped by Clyw's Tasha's Laughter incantation and badly wounded by Thebia as it rolled around on the floor has now regained it's wits.
We start next week on #4, round 2 Alkaia.

Events from 0305 16/3/4448 - 1000 17/3/4448

Finishig off the two Ettins the party push on through the fenns until they come to a stony islet. They explore downwards into caves strewn with offerings. To one side they discover the poor Hobbit children Nettleblossom and Surefoot Shortshanks and rescue them from a cage. To the other they come across a horrid sight. The massive bloated form of the Ettin-Mother. Blind and foul, barely able to move. Earendil burns her with magic whilst Clyw helps with arrows. The girls take the children outside away from this horrid work.
Her screams however bring one more of her paramours running to help. The Amazons butcher it before it gets close.
Whilst leading the children back to the woodcutter's camp at Inwyn they are attacked by the last of the two headed beasts which they kill easily.
The villagers are delighted to see the children returned and a party begins until Clyw mentions the Dragon.... All cheer gone our heroes ponder upon their next move.

Return to Actun. Mitra's Mirror commissioned. Plans laid.

Events from 1000 17/3/4448 - 0800 20/3/4448

Returning to Nho the party collected the bounty for slaying the Ettins then fell to fratching as to their next move. It was decided that they would first take the Hobbit orphans to saftey in Actun and set off in their magical ship along the coast southwards.
Passing the Morromines and onto the lively port of Quitzit where they partied the night away under the stars to the sound of the Gnome steel drum band.
The following morning after building sand castles and swimming in the tropical sea with their young charges they began their trip north past the steaming Gristly Jungle and into the magical realm of Faerie now much bolstered by the resurgent Narith.
They rested at Castle Sylvan overnight before pressing on to glorious Actun where a troop of silver armoured knights escorted them to Good King Redon.
Many things were discussed regarding the state of affairs in the wider world (See following posts). The name of the Svartalfa was heard for the first time and Earendil commissioned a mighty scrying mirror that will be ready 12/4/4448.
To pass the time until then they are planning a raid on the river fortress of Plychen up the River Actun. A dwarf stronghold now held by the Skull Crushers. A tribe of crafty Orcs.

This being a brief overview of current affairs passed on by King Redon the Enchanted to the Party at Actun 19/3/4448

Intense fighting from both the Wood Elves and the Imperials led to huge casualties during the attempted crossing of the Leander river. This included the deaths of both Splendulin’s eldest son Hektorious and the Captain of the Black Dragons, Galiabrar-Marestung another imperial immortal.
Luke warm support from Caer Cadwen came too late and the initial assault was beaten back with the arrival of Grey Elf forces from Shelter Haven led by the Bard Anstruth.

On the Targnol plains heroic action from both the Mitran rebels from Sully and the Gnolls of King Krak have lead to the Empire ‘s attack grinding to a halt and the death of General Giolan, leader of the Emperor’s military might in the province.  As a result of this the supporting force of Veridian soldiers from Targnol Port have returned to the city.

Further north the Yakin Ley Hill Giants took an unexpected beating at Ruppin Athuk. A surprise attack by a powerful force of Fimir from the Marmonmist driving them out. They return to their strong hold to lick their wounds only for King Spaen Brot-Buckle to be struck down by an assassin who fled after the deadly attack.
News of this set back causes the joint Mitra/Mycr expeditionary force to loose heart and return to Tel-QA leaving the elven alliance without support.

To the west, Harlgrimn Ironsides has had no success raising the Berserker clans. It would seem they are willing to stay neutral. For now at least. Other factions keeping their powder dry and happy to take no action at present are the Elephlands, the Red Reavers, the Imperial Overlord, the exiled leaders of the Natchai and those forces still loyal to the Black Sun.

To the east, fierce resistance at Bisgen slows down Bondorr’s champion, Hakeem Greywolf’s Altani hoard but his progress seems inexorable. Where does the Eye of Morg guide him next and for what reason?

Journy up river to Plychen.

Events from 0800 20/3/4448 - 0900 1/4/4448

Morning saw our heroes heading north along the banks of the Elvenstar having procured mounts and equipment in Actun.
The journey through the enchanted faerieland was uneventful but as they were leaving the boundaries of the Narith’s powers the had a strange encounter. Stood under a withered ash tree stood a mysterious female figure. Clad all in grey, a ragged shawl covering her head, she gestured for the party to halt before delivering her ode.

The Three Mull Kreen have darkling guile
Faer' nether runnel banks they dwell To spin their straw, Fie! Sparkling pile
Of gilt, ye fetch enchantment fell. (The Three Mull Kree have done no wrong, they merely tell their story well.)
It lures the foolish and the strong
To fiendish fangs and hairy hell!

With this she dissolved like a whisp of smoke on the breeze and was gone.

They continued along the river until the intersected a stream where several animals lay dead, apparently drained of blood. Alkaia correctly assessed this to be the work of Giant Lamprey and they deciddd to wait out the night on the south side before pressing on in the morning. Only a hungry bear disturbed their sleep and throwing it scraps soon had it ambling away.
Dawn saw them attempting a stealthy approach to the old Dwarven towers with Mr. Peewit, Clyw’s familiar flying above.
They soon came within sight of the mighty escarpment and cataract of the Elvenstar guarded by its tall spires. Through the familiar’s eyes they watched a merchant ship approach from above. It docked at a wooden jetty and Orcs took payment. Then with wonder they saw the dwarf engineering spring into action. Great derricks were swung out from the towers and the boat lifted from the water. Then using harnessed Giants as counterbalances the vessel was brought to the lower reaches of the river.
We leave our chaps huddled in a thicket wondering at this marvellous endeavour until next week.

Crusty Sea Dogs and cunning plans.

Events from 0900 1/4/4448 - 1300 7/4/4448

Clyw scouted the lower towers carfully and found no way to enter them bar a few arrow slits about 60' above. They decided to go catch up with the merchantmen about to set sail south.
Hailing it from the shore they were hauled aboard and met with Captain Arnson who, over rum told his tale.
It seems he was a happy fellow now the Orcs ran things. Indeed it had been he and his crew who had helped the horrid creatures take it from the dwarves. Sailing up to the docks with a hold full of them and easily overpowering the score of trusting engineers within. This done he was benefiting from now having sole access to take cloth and copper to the great elven market.
Clyw sowed the seeds and Thebia then convinced the greedy fellow that he would make even more cash by double crossing the Orcs and becoming master of the towers himself. They made haste to Actun to refine their plot.
Now here it gets complicated (and more than a little disturbing for those of a gentle disposition). Our heroes double crossed the double crossing captain making their own plans with good King Redon. Clyw was sent out on a booe up with the unsuspecting pirate captain and attempted to use his Suggestion magic to gain secret passwords and the location of a suspected hidden entrance from him. At first this failed but then Clyw disguised himself as a seductive barmaid and tried again. Sitting on his knee and becoming most friendly, his spell was a great success. Alas the amarous pirate (he'd been aboard ship for quite some time) began to fondle what he thought was a busty blonde bar keep only for his questing fingers to discover more than they had bargained for! With a shriek he leapt to his feet fumbling for his cutlass but nimble Clyw had made good his escape and disappeared into the night with just a flutter of pettycoats left behind.
With the location of the secret entrance and the correct passwords the pirates were rounded up to a man and their vessel crewed with sailors and soldiers loyal to the elf king. GThe next day they set sail north and once under cover of the spray from the falls slipped into the passages below the towers whilst the Orcs above lowered the ropes to lift their craft.
Inside things did not go as planned and a series of false starts and poor rolls saw our chaps leaping back aboard the River Princess just as it left the water.
As they rose up the escarpment a pair of huge Giants came down acting as counter weights. They ready their weapons as the top of the falls come into view... and here we will join them next week.

XP 1,500 each.

Dance of the deadly strumpets.

Events from 1300 7/4/4448 - 1319 7/4/4448

Finally the River princes was raised above the rushing falls and laid down in the river above. Here two columns of sweating Orcs secured ropes to it and heaved it to a rest at the wooden jetty.
A dandy looking Orc and six burly henchmen came out through a sally port in the western tower and hailed what they thought was captain Arnson returning from Actun but was actually cunning Clyw in disguise.
A disguise he took to fully when he led the party straight down the gang plank and greeted the Orcs like long lost kin.
The Orc chief, T'Danz took mightily to Thebia offering much gold for the fair damsel, he even offered a handful of coins for Alkaia as they don't see many women in these parts a deal which Clyw accepted delightedly.
Leaving the lasses to entertain the troops Earendil and Clyw followed chief T'Danz across to the western tower and then deep below ground past many guards to discuss serious business (Mitra's Cleric posing as a wealthy Veridian merchant for now.)
Wasting no time our heroines began a traditional Amazon dance. One that involved the intricate whirling of sword and spear. Jiggling around almost in time to Alkaia's off tune wailing for a few minutes the Orcs looked on in amazement. Until WHACK! STAB! They fell upon their audience in a frenzy.
Two of the henchmen that were left behind gave battle whilst a third fled the tower to alert the now resting Orcs without and a number of guards from above began their descent to see what was afoot. Quite the battle was joined and then Thebia raised a mighty shout summoning the elven forces from the ship. Lord Crenley, flaming sword held high led the charge of and his mermidons fell upon the rear of the bewildered Orcs making mincemeat of them. Our lasses continued to lay them low from the tower too, holding the entrance.
Up above the Giants in the top towers were making heroic efforts to pull their comrades back up and the orcish forces were mustering in earnest. A small contingent being sent to warn their chums below ground.
When the boys heard the alarm they knew it was time to act. Clyw magically suggested to the chief that he wait there whilst he and Earendil investigated, failing his save T'Danz agreed. Once out from the guard chamber they had reached they spiked the door and raced back up the spiral stair of the east tower. Clyw ran the gauntlet of some surprised crossbowmen dodging nearly all their bolts. These poor fellows fared even worse when, as they were reloading Earendil blasted them to ash with a Fireball that filled the chamber. They emerged at the top of the tower just as the Giant's were lowered down onto the top of the escarpment.
Earendil sent another Fireball flying across the bridge frying another group of crossbowmen and Clyw became invisible before setting off across afterwards an action that will free the Orc chief of his Suggestion.
By now the forces outside were almost either routed or dead and here we finished for the evening.
Until next week.

Initiative Order.

Thebia 14
Orcs outside 11

Plychen recaptured, return to Actun. The Elsenwood in flames!

Events from 1319 7/4/4448 - 0700 10/4/4448

With the Orcs outside fleeing, the elves and the Giant on the west shore joined battle. Another Giant hurled a boulder at the retiring Earendil before Clyw cast his Tasha's Laughter spell on the Cleric's tormentor bringing it to it's knees. Inside Thebia and Alkaia mopped up the remaining Orcs on the staircase and headed up to the parapet on the Western tower.
They were just in time to see Earendil bring down his magic on one of the Giants below only to be answered by two hurled boulders which smashed him unconcious to the ground! (A rolled 19 & naturl 20 for 66HP damage!)
The others sprang into action and before Mitra's champion could expire he awoke to the grinning face of Thebia, "You owe me..." She gloated.
By this time the remaining Orcs and Giants had either been killed or driven off. The elf forces had invested and secured the upperworks and our heroes had discovered that Chief T'Danz and the survivors hd fled. Searching the now abandoned works below they turned up a map and a magical miniature cottage. Lord Crenley helped them translate the command runes upon this item that was recognised by Earendil as 'Orion's Rest'. Testing it out it was found that a full sized dwelling could be summoned along with all the comforts of home.
It was at this time that a magical Sending was received from no lesser person than Splendulin, joint king of the wood elves. The words rang in their ears. "The Elsenwood burns! Imperial's attacking in force at the Leafork. Great iron machines!"
Sending Peewit, Clyw's owl familiar ahead they secured reinforcments for Plychet and set off down river to Actun to discuss their options with King Redon arriving at dawn on the 10th.

XP Earendil & Thebia 6,200. Clyw 5,500 and Alkaia 5,200

Tough choices in Actun....

Events from 0700 10/4/4448 -1630 10/4/4448

Arriving at Actun with the rising sun the party saw Sir Sandor half elven waiting for them at the quayside. After a brief but warm greeting he escorted them to the palace where a worried King Redon waited. They were discussing options of how to reach the beleaguered Elsenwood when High Priestess Lutheia entered and offered to beseach Cilborith (the elven God) for a miracle to transport them directly to the court of Efrinodel and Splendulin at hidden Hefaeland Cleft some 30 miles south east of the imperial attack deep within the Elsenwood. Earendil communed with mighty Mitra who confirmed this location was at present safe. Equiping for the journey all met at The Narith (the holy site) where the best chance of interceding with Cilborith would be found.

Alas the dice Gods were not with our chaps and even with a 76% chance a roll of 98% meant failure. Earendil also called on his God and a similar roll of 89% showed that they did not have the ear of their deities on this day. Could there be a reason for this?

Returning to the palace they reviewed the other options available to them. They could fly to Nho on the back of the Giant Owls in but a few hours and from there attempt the crossing of the Trident Gulf. The Owls do not do well flying over open water and Sir Sandor was loath to take them further. Travel from Nho would not be easy as the Green Emperor had set his mighty fleets to blocade the gulf. Thebia suggested riding below the waves in the same way they had arrived and perhaps sabotaging some of the ships along the way but another route appealed more to Clyw and Earendil.
During their earlier meeting questions had been asked regarding passage upriver to the Erlag and then portaging their boat to the headwaters of the Nho. This plan had a number of drawbacks including a mighty citadel, Tirantal Keep, which controlled access to the Erlag. This place was now in the hands of a captain of The Red Reavers one Carolin an Alryan mercenary having been captured from it's rightful owner a wise Knight called Lord Bennet who's son Ganon it transpired was to be found here in Actun living in exile. Wishing to explore this avenue further they set off across the city to meet with him.
The meeting went well and much was learned from young Sir Ganon about the Keep and the surrounding areas some of which were detailed on the map recovered from Plychen. Listed below for convenience.

1) Jasmyria is a prosperous town allied to Actun that produces fine silk and it would seem fine assassins for it was from here that the miscreant who had tried to poison King Redon had come.

2) Shavenoak. Another well to do town that prospers due to it's copper mines. Also allied to Actun.

3) Skaney is a notorious den of Gnolls.

4) Charnock, south and east of the Fairgem is a hive of scum and villainy, a center of power for The Red Reavers controlled by one of their number a robber-baron named Tovekerd.

5) The caves marked on the Orc's map is well known locally as the lair of Basilisks.

6) The secret exit from from Tirantal Keep was collapsed by Sir Ganon's father after the young lord made good his escape. The forces of it's new guardian Captain Carolin are said to be both numerous and fell handed.

Following this meeting a plan was devised to procure a sleeping poison, capture the Basilisks, force a way past Tirantal Keep with the slumbering monsters then use them as they passed Bitter End, down the Nho river should they encounter Falsum the Black Dragon to turn him to stone....
To this end Clyw visited an alchemist and commissioned two draughts of a potent poison whilst the others returned to the palace around 3 in the afternoon. King Redon was surprised and distressed to still see them in the city and not speeding to the aid of the burning Elsenwood. Earendil outlined their plans to head north on a Basilisk hunt and to secure passage up the Erlag first and so the Elf King, in desperation , commanded his senchenel Sir Sandor to risk the royal owls and fly his troops across the Trident Gulf in an attemt to offer succor to his Wood Elf allies. Hearing this Earendil relented and went to get Clyw ready to fly with them. However the rogue was intransigent. "I go north." were his final words.

Will this mean a split in our heroes Parliment? How much longer can the Elsenwood last before the fangled machines of The Veridian Eye? The Owls leave on their perilous journey in 30 minutes, whowill be on them?
These questions and more will be answered in two weeks time!

Events 1630 10/4/4448 - 0100 11/4/4448

Alkaia and Thebia along with King Redon and Sir Sandor waited nervously for Clyw and Earendil to return. They had made a plan and were ready to spring into action.
Finally the boys were found, brought back and after a brief conference all climed to the aviary high above the elven city. Mounting the great birds they swooped upwards behind Sandor and two elf Knights. This journey did not start well for once outside the protection of the Narith they flew straight into the teeth of a tropical storm and were grateful when they landed at a logging camp north of Nho after seeing the squalid little town was now giving harbour to an Imperial war galley. A little elven gold saw them fed and on their way in short order.
Soon they were over the open seas of the Trident Gulf and heading towards the southern coast of Gheulost Island the highly fortified center for the mining of Carbellium, the sacred red metal that passes through metal like a hot knife through butter. A strange sight met them here. Colours that most could not recognise swam and twisted in the air below them. Ony Earendil, rich in the ancient law of Veridistan knew the deadly secret that they saw. Here was the the legendery fleet of Pyaray, Duke of Hell who's ships are crewed with the damned souls of drowned sailors. Usually found only in the deepest depths of the Oceans here it was, causing the very waters around it to broil and change into nightmare form.
Wisely they flew high above the horrid fleet and found a safe eyrie to rest among the high peaks of the Volk Mountains before pressing on towards the coast of the mainland close by the Hradd Ruins. They saw far below two great Demons, Glabrazu, watching out but silently flew above them and on over the Targnol planes, now filled with a thousand camp fires where bold Gnoll King Krak battled Imperial forces to rest again at the Holy Mounds where they saw to the west the dull red glow of wildfire illuminating the darkening skies to the west.
The last leg of their heroic flight brought them to the hidden court of the Wood Elves at Hefaeland Cleft where they were greeted by the wearry kings Efrinodel and Splendulin. Council was taken and swift action followed. Our four heroes setting off to find out more about the metal machines that were burning the Elsenwood that were now within 10 miles of the city itself.
Smoke filled the air and panicked often burning animals fled past them. The heat rising as they drew closer. Then crashing through the blazing forest they saw one. A full thirty feet tall and moving on three flexible legs the iron monster let out a siren wail. "OOOLLAHHHH!"
Battle will be joined next week!

Praise Mitra!

Events 0100-0110 11/4/4448

Earendil raised his arms and cried out to his God. "Mighty Mitra! Save us. Extinguish these flames that destroy the Elsenwood!"... A moments silence seemed to fall all across the land and then with a mighty flash of lightning and a roar of thunder the heavens opened with a deluge like the world has never seen. Everyone and everything was momentarily flattened by the pouring rain and then it was gone. Leaving behind just smoking blackened stumps of trees where had recently been an inferno.
Taking advantage of this our chaps leapt into action charging the metal monster which lashed at them with it's heat ray causing terrible wounds. Clyw threw up a wall of fog that helped as they drew closer and Earendil conjured a Spirit Weapon once Thebia had found that normal weapons had no effect upon it.
Battle was joined and the machine was lined with glowing Faerie Fire helping them to strike true. Clyw and Alkaia both tried climbing up the long legs but he was scorched and she was kicked off. The fight turned very nasty and only Mitra's Cleric sacrificing all his high level healing slots kept them in the game but then the Star Spear found a critical spot. Lightning shot up the things legs to it's body and Boom! it exploded in a fireball that flawed the ranger and badly damaged the others. Thebia quickly revived her friend by laying on her Paladins' hands. As she rose and the ringing in their ears subsided and in the distance came the terrible cry "OOHHLLAAHHH!"

XP 6,000 each

NB. This is the first time a call for Divine Intervention has worked in this campaign. With a roll of 07 many congratulations to Earendil 🙂

The Owls - the owls!

Events 0110 - 0115 11/4/4448

The monstrous machines came on; their extended legs striding through the muddy ground and scorched trees of the ruined Elsenwood.
Our heroes, bloodied and bent prepared to flee (except an invisible Clyw who was determined to get a closer look and possibly find a weakness.)
Then like three falling comets the owls came. Swooping down their riders hurling Magic Missiles as they came. The Veridians replied with their deadly scorching rays!
The party rallied and launched their counter attack. Clyw dashed forward taking minor burns as he climbed a smoking tree. His friends followed behind. Earendil pouring his remaining healing magic out to help.
Above the owl riders were now visible and identified as Splendulin and Effrinodol the twin elf Kings and bold Sir Sandor of Actun. The first were brought down, their mounts dead beneath them but still they hewed at the metal monsters with their magical blades.
Alkaia joined them whilst Mitra’s Cleric summoned spirit weapons to aid them.
But it was Clyw who used his Misty Step spell to gain a footing atop the giant metallic construct who was to destroy the thing utterly.
His cunning fingers opening the arcane lock that opened a lid into the turret. Within a spindle limbed, green skinned humanoid was attached by many wires, lights flashed as it operated the machine it was grafted to. The stealthy rogue killed it with one thrust of his rapier but this set off a mighty explosion, for a moment it remained standing then collapsed in on itself crashing to earth in a massive fireball as those below fled the immediate area of danger. But where was Clyw?
Find out next week.

XP 5,000 each.

Events 0115 11/4/4448 - 1000 1/5/4448

A badly wounded Clyw snatched his owl from certain doom as he leaped and tumbled from the collapsing machine and the firball that surrounded it.
They decided to give chase to the fleeing imperial forces but only Clyw mounted on Earendil's Ebony Fly had any hope of keeping up and this almost brought about his death. Almost upon the last of the machines he was struck by it's heat ray despite his attempt to conceal himself with magic. He and the now broken mahgical fly plummeted to the ground. Clyw was rescued in the nick of time (2 failed death saves) the figuring of wonderous power lost for ever.
With a heavy heart they joined with the Elven Kings and returned to their secret City at the Hefeald Cleft. Details of the council and it's outcome will be posted seperately.

Here ended the second part of this campaign.

Experience, those not at level 11 were raised to 85,001 other 6,000XP. All characters received a +1 bonus to any stat.

Just 48 hours after it began the Imperial attack has been defeated. Thanks mainly to swift action by the party. Their timely arrival by Owl from Actun and subsequent successful attack against the fighting machines of the Veridian Eye have not only stopped the offensive in its tracks but have caused the Green Emperor to withdraw his beleaguered forces back across the Leander.
However much hurt has been done to the ancient Elsenwood with miles of forest laid waste. But without the intervention of Mitra the damage could have been much worse.
Initial reports from the Elven Rangers of Hekate in the week following the withdrawal show that the surviving great war machines have withdrawn as far as the Emperor’s Wall and now cling to the towers of Sun Watch and Midwall like menacing iron spiders.
A feast of thanks giving was held at the Hefaeland cleft along with a solemn service of remembrance for the fallen including Prince Hektorious, son of King Splendulin where the Mater Bard, Anstruth sang a great lament.
Messengers from Shelter Haven seem to suggest that the Fair Folk resisted the attack better than their Sylvan cousins but still much harm was done to the woodlands around it.
Relieved of siege the Giants of Yakin Ley are regrouping and emissaries from there and from the rebel armies of Tel Qa are gathering at the hidden city for a hastily arranged Council.
Two more notable arrivals are Harlgrimn Ironsides with a delegation from the Berserker Wilds and a red skinned Altani Druid named Ernaston Blue who claims to represent the warlord Hakeem Greywolf.
The Council is set to begin at dawn on the last day of Sweetrain.

Those present at the Council of Hefaeland 20/4/4448

King Splendulin & King Efrinodel. Joint rulers of the Elsenwood.

Aknekkle Seven Blows of Yakin Ley.

The Master Bard Anstruth representative of Shelter Haven.

Sir Sandor, Half Elven for Actun.

Lady Rosmix Repaid, representing the Mitran forces from Tel Qa.

Jerech the Disciple representing Mycr.

Harlgrimn Ironsides representing the tribes of the Berserker Wilds.

Ernason Blue representing the Altani hoard of Hakeem Greywolf from the East.

And the Heroes:

Alkaia of Sea Rune
Thebia Valandros
Earendil of Mitra
Clyw Furtton

Ernsorn Blue revealed the Warlord Hakeem’s intentions in his war in the east to be that of revenge upon the Red Reavers of Grimalon for wrongs done upon his wife, Malen of Ahyf. The Golden Queen. He also gifted them magical sending stones born of the Eye of Morg which would allow the party to communicate over great distances with those they chose.
He also revealed that the two wolves of the prophecy were Hakeem and his son Hassan. Known as The Grey Wolf and the Wolf of the New Dawn respectively.
The council then offered the party lordship over the lands currently held by the Red Reavers with the protection of the Green Emperor should they so choose. All but Earendil chose to do so after an evening of wine and contemplation.
At council the following day they were invested with the title ‘Lords’ Grimalon.’
Plans were then drawn up to launch a stealthy attack across the Leander River upon the mighty fortress of Carr Cadwen.

Lands granted to the Lords of Grimalon.

All lands east of the River Erlag, south of the River Buckol, west of the town’s of Redcliffe and Hlymdale. South of the Elvenstar River, west of the Romolion Sea and North of the Wildwood unto the eastern bank of the Fairgem.
These to include dominion over the towns of Dart, Henham, Charnock, Skaney and Shavenoar.

The new Lord’s Grimalon can now dispose of all treasures for a minimal fee (5%) from their lands to the markets of Actun. They will also receive tax revenues from their holdings at a level decided by themselves.
They are entitled to a representative at the Courts of Actun, Normoot (CSIO), Ahyf and Tel Qa should they choose to send them.

Review of session 70 (Tuesday 1st October 2019)

At the sign of the Smashed Skull

Players and their characters
Genghisdon with Earendil of Mitra.
Dreamteam playing Clyw a Rogue from the CSIO.
Icemaiden and Thebia, Amazon Paladin of Athena from Highhaven.
Bochi with Alkaia. Amazon Ranger of Sea Rune.

Events 1000 1/5/4448 - 0100 2/5/4448

Over a hearty breakfast our fellows chatted with Hekate and arranged to meet her after the council to secretly ferry them across the Leander where they were to sneak into Caer Cadwen under cover of darkness to meet with a half Orc by the name of Agon-Tosh.
With the aid of Alkaia's magic they slipped like ghosts through the busy streets and found their way to their contact without issue. Coins swapped hands and later that night they all met up behind the tavern where Agon lead them through the myriad of stinking alleyways to a secret entrance into the Shah's palace.
They crept through the ground floor of this building until they found an opulent staircase leading upwards to a set of gilded doors. Opening them they entered a grand throne room. Sat in conversation up a marble staircase opposite them was a strange green skinned little fellow and a tall saturnine man in plate armour.
Earendil bellowed out a challenge! And it's here we will join them next week.

Experience to come next session.

Initiative order (Thebia still to roll.)
