[WOW RPG Technology] How to design blunderbuss-like weapon..

Postby Kothas » Tue May 25, 2010 4:29 pm

...or to upgrade its damage, range or save DC? Sadly there are no examples in books. Just statement that it is possible in core rulebook, p.181 under "Blunderbuss".
My thoughts:
Code: Select all
Feature              Technology Score
Blunderbuss damage  (TS)d6
Blunderbuss save DC  TS∙5
Blunderbuss range    TS∙20ft

Example:
Code: Select all
FD 20 (firearm)
TS1 3 (damage 3d6)
TS2 3 (projectile weapon)
TS3 3 (save DC15)
TS4 1 (20ft cone)
TF 1
MR 1
TS=3 (MAX[TS1,…,TSn])
CS=20 (FD/2+TS1+…+TSn)
MV=600 gp ([FD∙TS∙CS]/[TF+MR])
CraftDC=23 (FD+TS)

Welcome to The Piazza, Kothas!

I picked up the Warcraft RPG books (well, most of them), plus the WoW RPG book a while ago. However, I didn't really explore the mechanics deeply, and the game I ran went a different direction. So, without the books in front of me, I can't really comment on the suggested mechanic.

However, it's possible the intention was to either allow the crafting of more powerful blunderbusses (like what can be built in the MMO with Engineering) or the addition of scopes (again, like what's in the MMO).

Note: The Warcraft RPG had a spell and tech supplement at one point (Magic & Mayhem). It looks like there's a WoW RPG equivalent (More Magic & Mayhem). That might have some additional information.

Thanks for warm welcome! :) Back on the topic.
There is another blunderbuss-like gun in More Magic & Mayhem, p.195 called Acid Gun that deals 3d6 damage in 10ft cone with save DC15 with following data: "MR 3; TS 3; Craft DC 23; Price 255 gp."
Reverse-engineering it reveals:
Code: Select all
FD  20 (firearm)
TS1 3 (3d6 damage)
TS2 3 (save DC15)
TS3 1 (10ft cone?)
TF  1
MR  3
TS=3       =MAX(TS1,…,TSn)
CS=17      =FD/2+TS1+…+TSn
MV=255 gp  =(FD∙TS∙CS)/(TF+MR), gp
CraftDC=23 =FD+TS
UseDC=13   =10+TS

Updating:
Code: Select all
Feature              Technology Score
Blunderbuss damage  (TS)d6
Blunderbuss save DC  TS∙5
Blunderbuss range    TS∙10ft

Blunderbuss remade:
Code: Select all
FD 20 (firearm)
TS1 3 (damage 3d6)
TS3 3 (save DC15)
TS4 2 (20ft cone)
TF 1
MR 1
TS=3 (MAX[TS1,…,TSn])
CS=18 (FD/2+TS1+…+TSn)
MV=540 gp ([FD∙TS∙CS]/[TF+MR])
CraftDC=23 (FD+TS)

Opinions anyone?

Hi Kothas. Welcome to The Piazza.

I'm still trying to track down copies of both Magic and Mayhem and More Magic and Mayhem.

That is a nice bit of reverse-engineering you have done there. I wish I knew enough to be able to double check your logic. I would say go with it, until you can find other sources to compare against.

I wonder if the fan netbook Even More Magic and Mayhem has got those sort of rules. This netbook is essentially finished, bar some art, but I've not been able to get any feedback from the people doing the project. There is a thread about Even More Magic (and the other two netbooks they are working on) called [resource] Warcraft RPG fan netbooks. When I can get some news from anyone on the netbook team, I'll post it over there.

Thanks for input, Big Mac.
Sadly Even More Magic & Mayhem does not contain appropriate examples or rules. :(

I looked over the tech rules in the WoW RPG book last night. It looks like your approach is correct. I did see a note that the upgrade is calculated as a device with all the features of the original plus the upgrade, and if I'm reading your numbers correctly you're doing that.

So... looks good to me at a semi-casual glance :-)

(Disclaimer: I never actually played either the Warcraft or WoW MMO, although I was looking at running a game set in Azeroth at one point.)

Sorry for the red herring. But thanks for giving us the link to the beta version of Even More Magic & Mayhem. I think I might email Greywolf and invite him/her to join our World of Warcraft forum (and help raise awareness of the need for people to proofread this book...and donate artwork).

It would be nice if final version of EMM&M included:
Technological Scores (TS) for guns & devices from core rulebook;
additions for technological features table for designing blunderbuss and repeating guns;
several examples of technological designs!

Hmm. That certainly sounds like something that could go into an appendix and not take up too much additional space.
