4e: Archetypes

Why some of the archetypes are marked NPC seems rather arbitrary.

Typically, the NPC archetypes tend to be "Evil" races, classes that have less reason to be adventuring, or groups that have a disproportionate amount of power.

You could still play an NPC archetype (they're in the book, after all), but they are things that the GM and Players should discuss first to make sure it doesn't throw off the party or whatever stories the GM might be preparing.

There are several cases, though, where you are encouraged to play a variety of spellcasters, but not "evil" warriors. And why a Za Smuggler and not a Za Bandit?
