Someone needs to go, and I do not know anyone in Penhaligon, so I'd not be useful here.

Penhaligon and Stallanford
Scene III - Klinten, Fyrmont, Late summer, 24th day, 992 AC

The day after Retameron stays in Penhaligon with Sam, Cardia, Halia, Bofar and Taradain to speak with Fain Flinn, Lord Arturus and possible adventurers who may be in town. Lord Arturus is a tall, grey haired knight with grey moustaches who welcomes you warmly in his keep. He is evidently worried about his daughter. Arturus' brother Kavorquian and his son Kaerin Penhaligon, who lost an arm in the Wufwolde hills, are present too. Kaerin says Kelvin has been warned too, and Desmond Kelvin I will arrive personally with a few knights of the Order of the Griffon, through teleport. Many Knights of the Three Suns and Penhaligon footsoldiers are alreasy moving north as fast as possible, to avoid detection. Lord Arturus in fact is persuaded that Skarda may have spies, and the Iron Ring too, if the two are connected as it may seem. If you do not have questions for the present, you will proceed with Retameron to search for adventurers willing to help Stallanford.

Gila, Kesh, Karto, Gabriel and Lucius instead ride in the morning to Stallanford, where they arrive in the afternoon, as the road is quite easy to travel. The town is bustling and busy, with many visitors and merchants’ wagons seeking hostels and stables for horses, with no signs of alarms. Retameron however had warned you that the leaders of the town will try to keep the town as normal as possible, as Lord Arturus Penhaligon fears Skarda will not attack and fall in your trap, if warned. Therefore a front gate guards quietly lead you to meet Lord Stallan and other people in the small keep of the town. Lord Stallan, Gila explain, is a Thyatian widely known to have married a Traladaran woman of the local noble family, Alina Vemanov. Lord Stallan is a supporter of Traladarans and has been labeled as traitor by Thyatian extremists. This would explain why Stallanford has been targeted. At the meeting Lord Stallan, a big warrior over forty years old, is present with other two people: a gray haired man wearing leather introduced as Janner, and a cleric introduces as Aralic, with brown hair and green eyes. Lord Stallan says he is trying to mobilize his forces as effectively and as quiet as possible. The town has been attacked in the past by Leghorn orcs, but they have been now quiet for some time. Jarren plans to keep an eye of the woods to see if there are orc scouts around, but Lord Stallan would like you to keep an eye on all the people who came in town for the Harvest Festival, to locate a possible spy.

Lucius wanders through the festival area without openly associating with the others. He recommends to keep the automaton out of sight, to avoid any observer who could recognizable it from the battle.

Penhaligon and Stallanford
Scene III - Klinten, Fyrmont, Late summer, 24th day, 992 AC

During the day Retameron leads Sam, Cardia, Halia, Bofar and Taradain around Penhaligon, first visiting three of the most important wizards in town, Selina, Magnus Nelaine and the elf Meranan Ravensmane. All three have already been hired by Lord Arturus, but Retameron briefly discuss with them how to handle Skarda. Retameron, Cardia and Halia think Skarda has to touch the mirror to teleport it away, so once the portal opens it will be extremely urgent to cover it somehow and to prevent Skarda from reaching it, if he is around. Retameron anyway will also discuss tactics with you in the next days.
The next stop is the temple of Chardastes, where Retameron knows personally Master Healer Jenna Allinn, who has already been informed by Lord Arturus too. Then the Shadow Dragon, a inn popular with adventurers.
"Good, Sharrlaya is here!", Retameron says as soon as you enter, ponting to a dark haired young woman who is playing a lute and singing, while several people watch her. Beside the woman, there is a strange humanoid in an even stranger dress:
Image

In the meantime in Stallanford Gila, Kesh, Karto and Lucius wander the town, taking a look around. There are many people in town in anticipation of the Harvest Festival, mostly farmers who live around the town but also a fair number of traders and visitors from Penhaligon and soldiers of the Duke's road. You learn indeed that a certain number of the Duke’s Road Battalion are always in leave in the town. These days an important lieutenant, Brogan Manning, native of the town, is present too. The major products of the town arec cheese, strong dark beer, horses, wagons and leather goods. Once the town had mines too to the west and the east but in later years gnolls attacks from the west and orcs attacks from the east have forced the population to abandon them. However the presence of the road, the Duke's road men, the vicinity of Penhaligon and natural resource have keep the road prospering. The most notable buildings, beside Lord Stallan's castle, are The Hungry Halfling inn, the Church of Traladara of Aralic, whom you already met, a smaller Church of Karameikos, and the Armorer's shop, a dwarf named Dalmarek. The town is defended by a wooden palizade, quite high and with battlements and towers. The most persistent rumor is about Garrick One-eye, the leader of a bandit gang which has robbed caravans and, some say, kidnapped lonely travellers.

Penhaligon and Stallanford
Scene III - Klinten, Fyrmont, Late summer, 24th day, 992 AC

"A creature from the remote east - Cardia replies - Sharrlaya has travelled to place few people know in this region of the world".
Bofar can see the creature is more or less as tall as he. Once the human woman has completed her song, they both indeed approach Retameron and you.
"Retameron Antonic is still alive against all odds!" the woman says smiling to him.
"Odds are not getting better and we need your help, any help we can get indeed", he says, returning the smile.
The creature in the meantime look placidly at you all, and is in return studied with interest by Cardia and Halia while Retameron explains to Sharrlaya what has bring you in the inn..

Penhaligon and Stallanford
Scene III - Klinten, Fyrmont, Late summer, 24th day, 992 AC

In the Shadow Dragon Inn in Penhaligon, Sharrlaya agrees to help you after briefly speaking to the creature, whom she introduces as Keio. He makes a small bow in your direction. After agreeing with them on a meeting in Stallanford in the next days, you leave the inn.
"Well now there is not much left in Penhaligon - Retameron says - The Angry Giant inn, which is not a place favoured by adventurers, and Mistress Alicia's House of Pleasure, which may be. Alicia herself is a powerful priest of Valerias, but I'm not sure how willing she could be to leave the town".
"And you are a close friend of this Mistress?" Halia asks with a smile.
Retameron blushes a bit. "I would not say a close friend", he replies.
"I could do a bit of spying in either location - Sam says - there is also The Adler in the old centre, which is a place for adventurers, and The House of the Three Suns: mostly retired knights, but they could know something useful".
"Probably me, Sam and Taradain could do the spying in inns and the House - Halia says to Retameron - while you, Bofar and Cardia could go at the Three Suns".

In the meantime in Stallanford, Karto will go to speak to Dalmarek the armorer, seeing if you can obtain his help. Gila and Kesh would like to use magic to spy on the people in town, to locate possibly Skarda's men. They propose that Lucius goes to visit the local Church of Karameikos.
"Be wary with the priest, try to learn where his sympathies lies - Gila says - Lord Stallan could not swear about his loyalty, it seems he arrived recently after the previous priest, which was a friend of Lord Stallan, retired to Kelvin for old age and health issues".

Lucius goes to the Church. Before talking to the priest, he sees if he sees any parishioner (maybe an old woman) he could talk to, to assess at least what they think of the new one. He claims he had been in Stallanford as a child and remembered a different priest.

In Stallanford, Lucius see there are three middle aged women in the church, speaking among themselves. They are happy to ask questions to him and reply to some others. They say the priest seems to be a fine young man, loyal to the Duke as everyone is in Stallanford, and happy to see relations between Traladarans and Thyatians are quite good in town.
They point the priest to Lucius. He is a young man, quite tall, with brown hair. He is speaking to another man who appears to be a priest too, tall and black haired. "That one is a priest too, visiting our town from the Empire", a woman says, referring to the black haired priest.

Lucius takes advantage of the talkative women to get some names (especially of the old and new priests, but also the women and the priest from the Empire). When they discuss the visitor, he drops in some comments on Stallanford being a well positioned along the Duke's road, which should make it easy for friends and relatives to visit. Basically, he tries to get information that may help him pose as a friend or relative of one of the old women, so he drives the chat quite a bit. He doesn't provide the women with any personal information about himself (if asked, he makes up a name on the spot).
He does not contact the priest right now.

In Penhaligon, Halia, Sam and Taradain go visiting The Adler, The Angry Giant and Mistress Alicia's House of Pleasure.
Retameron, Bofar and Cardia in the meantime visit the House of the Three Suns. The manager, Sir Barton Midvale, has already heard all from Lord Arturus, and is willing to gather some knights to help in Stallanford. Later in the evening, you gather in the common room of The Merchant's Rest and Halia says there is a group of suspicious mercenaries staying at The Adler. Sam would like to surveill them during the night to see what they are up to..

In Stallanford, Lucius learns the name of the former priest, Malakos, and the current one, Adrianus. He also learns a lot about the women and their families, as they are wives of local shopkeepers. Eventually the dark haired priest leaves the church.

Lucius goes back to look for the others, warns them about the dark haired priest, giving them a description. He tells the others, in case they meet the priest at one of the inns and taverns, to pose as travelling sellswords and strike up a conversation, trying to learn where the dark haired priest comes from, maybe proposing to join him as guards if he travels in the same direction.
He will go back to the local priest, Adrianus, at a later time, when the old ladies are not there. He will pose as a relative from out of town of one of them (possibly one that lives furthest from the church), who is visiting, and knew the old priest, Malakos, but not the new one. He will chat with the priest about Malakos, inquiring as to his whereabouts and whether there would be parties to join to go visit him in Penhaligon (assuming Adrianus knows and reveals that Malakos is there).

Penhaligon and Stallanford
Scene III - Klinten, Fyrmont, Late summer, 24th day, 992 AC

In Penhaligon, Sam, Taradain, Bofar and Retameron takes turn to surveill The Adler, but nothing happens during the night. At dawn however the group seems ready to depart, as they are packing mules and horses. They do not have much baggage apparently, but lots of empty scabbards for weapons they had to leave at the gates of the town. There are five of them and it seems one gives orders to all the others.
"We may have to follow them to the north - Retameron says - probably we have spoken to all here anyway. Maybe two of us should stay behind just in case, and the others follow these men".

In Stallanford, Lucius speaks to the new priest, who seems an open minded and friendly guy. The former priest, Malakos, is now in Kelvin in a recovery of the Church, as he is now old and feeble.
The others, warned by Lucius, however can follow the dark haired priest to a taproom called The Eagle, small and crowded with soldiers and guards. Karto goes inside alone and tells the priest is indeed inside speaking with a group of men.
"Duke soldiers and a couple of town guards. Cannot escape me they were all Thyatians, and grinning a lot. I smell conspirators, if you ask me. The dwarf armorer told me about this place. It is considered the Thyatian place. Never been any particular trouble, but.."

To Stallanford
Scene IV - Klinten, Fyrmont, Late summer, 25th day, 992 AC

Retameron, Sam, Halia, Bofar and Taradain follow the men north, while only Cardia stays in Penhaligon a couple more days, to come later with the reinforcements that will reach Stallanford.
The road is quite travelled in both directions in this season, so it is very easy for you to follow the men without being conspicuous. On horseback, the 18 miles from Penhaligon to Stallanford can be covered in one day. The men stop midway at the Malakov Inn, which is also a group of farms and houses on the road, to eat quickly, then go along to the north.
Before the evening you see the wooden palizade of Stallanford, but the men now leave the road and quickly take a small trail to the east.
"Maybe I should follow them in front of you for a while" Sam says.
"Be cautious they will not spot you - Retameron says - and scream in case of danger. We will be right behind".

In Stallanford Lucius goes to The Eagle taproom in the evening of 25 Fyrmont. Among other people, there is again the dark haired priest with the same soldiers and guards of the night before. During the day apparently he stayed mostly in his room at The Hungry Halfing Inn, but left it in the afternoon to speak with an hooded, short guy, who later went to the Eagle too. The short guy is still here and, at the middle of the evening, he approaches the table of the dark haired priest. The two exchange glances, then the priest rise to leave, saying to the soldiers and the guards with him "I have now to meet our friends".

Outside Stallanford, Retameron, Halia, Bofar and Taradain follow the trail east and north east for at least two hours, until Sam returns to them.
"They have entered a cave quite well hidden, I must say. I have found and smelled traces of orcs all around it!"

In the evening, Lucius follows the short hooded man and the dark haired priests. They go to a minor gate in the palizade, speak briefly with the guard posted near it, and they exit the town.

Lucius goes back to fetch the others. The tworld men seem fishy, and they are going to meet some friends of their, so he needs the Highforge people to even the game. Since they exited from a minor gate, tracks will likely be easy to find.

"We must warn Lord Stallan about this - Retameron says - he may want to send his men to attack. Let's try to go back unnoticed and silently!"
You return toward Stallanford, but mid way to the town Sam urges you to hide in the woods. From the dark green, you see two men passing, one tall and dark haired, possibly a priest, the other short and hooded. They apparently do not notice you and go on toward the cave.
"More people.. seems a popular location. More reason to tell Lord Stallan as soon as possible.."
You go along but before reaching Stallanford Sam urges you to hide again.
"Another group of people is coming!", he says
As soon as you are hidden you see some people going to the cave too, but as they get nearer you realize it is Gila, Gabriel, Kesh, Karto and Lucius!
Retameron motions to get out and soon the others see him, Sam, Halia, Bofar and Taradain coming out of hiding.
"And you are here because?" Retameron asks with a smile.

Lucius briefly explains that they have been stalking a priest from the Empire of Thyatis who seemed to be involved in something suspicious. Now that we are back together, we may have the strength of numbers to stop whatever it is they're up to, so Lucius suggests to send a couple of the stealthier ones in to run reconnaissance.

In Stallanford
Scene IV - Klinten, Fyrmont, Late summer, 25th day, 992 AC

"That is very interesting - Retameron says after hearing Lucius' account - soldiers and guards talking to a priest who is now going to a cave where there are apparently mercenaries and orcs. Seems like a good place to set up a base. This must be part of Skarda's plot. However going there now could be not very wise. They could entrench themselves in the cave and call Skarda with all his minions immediately. Indeed it is better to surveill them and talk to lord Stallan.."
Gila and Sam agree. The halfling would stay here until the rangers of Jarren are warned.
The rest of you returns to Stallanford, and it is almost the middle of the night when you arrive. The guards at the gate are initially unwilling to let you enter, but then Gila asks to talk with the sergeant who was on duty when you exited, and eventually you are introduced to Lord Stallan, Alaric and Jarren at the castle, when it's almost dawn.
Lord Stallan is happy to see Retameron and greets the others who arrived today, then Retameron explains all the situation to him. Jarren, the ranger, however is the first to comment after a look with his lord.
"Assuming they have not seen you, the cave could be the place where they will assemble the army with which they intend to attack Stallanford. Maybe we should let them do that and set up a trap before they reach our walls. Better than to root them out from unknown caves". Jarren says.
"We should not forget something quite important - Gila says - as far as we know Skarda has a sort of mobile portal from which he can call forth a relevant number of armed men. So why should he call them in a cave miles from here when he could do it inside the town?"
An unconfortable silence sits into the room as all the people ponder Gila's words...

Lucius agrees with Gila, and proposes to arrest the priest or one of his associate and interrogate them to understand their plans, while keeping the cave under surveillance. Especially, if there are traitorous elements within the local guard, that would be critical.
