[TC1: Act 1]Little Girl(s) Lost

Postby RobJN » Mon Mar 24, 2014 8:31 pm

Threshold.

The seat of Tarnskeep, the stronghold of the local baron, Patriarch Sherlane Halaran. One of the last civilized stops along the Windrush spur of the Grand Duke’s Northron Road. Only Eltan’s Spring lies further north, nestled in the vale within the Black Peaks that houses the headwaters of the Windrush River.

But civilization only stretches as far along the Windrush Road as the baron’s garrison can patrol. The thickly forested slopes of the Black Peaks teem with tribes of goblins and kobolds — fortunately, they are too busy warring among themselves to be more than an occasional threat to the outlying farms.

Threshold was one of the first townships to fall to the hordes of invading Beast Men two thousand years in the past. Farmers still occasionally turn up relics from that conflict in their fields every now and again. It’s been said that the goblin warrens in the Black Peaks were once caves used by the Beast Men back in Halav’s day. Many have gone into those caves seeking treasures… some have even returned to tell of it.

Let’s think about your characters.
Do any of them know each other? Perhaps they’ve shared an adventure or two “off screen.”
If they are wanderers, newly arrived in town, where are they from?
What are the circumstances of their travel?

There are several taverns and inns in town — but most merchants in the market square recommend the Hook and Hatchet: clean beds, good hospitality, excellent food and drink, for a fair price. As a garrison watchpost is on one of the cross-streets, many of the townguardsmen drop by for a drink or two in the taproom after their rounds, making for an excellent source for news on goings-on in the town.

Dobrogost comes from Highforge, taking a sabbatical from his artificer studies.
To his dismay, his projects are appreciated more for their aesthetics than for functionality. Which is to say, among dwarves and gnomes, very little.
He decided that living among humans can expand his horizons and maybe allow him to find his creative niche. But that means a lot of field experiments. Long legs have very different needs from gnomes and dwarves.

Arwynt TallFellow grew up in the Five Shires where he was constantly looked down upon, and treated as an outcast due to his extraordinary height of 4'. As soon as he could Arwynt left the shires during his Yallara and traveled to the Duchy seeking adventure and learning.

Over the last decade Arwynt has settled down in the region around Threshold living in the forest nearby and improving his survival skills. Generally Arwynt has a great sense of humor, but tends to get put on edge when people ask "Aren't you a little tall for a halfling?"

Dobrogost spends a fair amount of time at the Hook and Hatchet, drawing portraits and other commissioned work to earn some money, while trying to figure out what mechanical tools humans would like.
One of his first designs, an automatic corkscrewer, needs funding to move from idea to reality.

Being sickly and slow, Legodor was never much for adventuring. But after some teasing by his siblings after their return from a triumphant conquest, he struck out on his own to make himself and hopefully build up some strength and courage. Legodor met Arwynt near his home in the forest on his way into town. They spent the afternoon chatting and became quick friends since it seemed they had so much in common.

Elves typically don't drink due to their near immunity to its effects, but Legodor's weak body is particularly susceptible, and he has grown quite fond of wine. That's why he found Dobrogost so brilliant when he heard him pitching his idea and would love to invest in his invention.

Arwynt really enjoys the company of Legodor, almost seeing himself as a sort of big brother to the sickly elf.

Upon hearing of Dobrogost's invention, Arwynt think's it is clever, but more importantly is happy to meet somebody shorter then himself in Threshold.

The innkeeper shakes his head.

"I'd like to help you out, Master Dobrogost, but... does it have to have so many of those... what did you call them? Gears? And those levers... a man could put a patron's eye out if he's not careful!" Innkeeper Perakarius turns back to drawing the last of four pints of a dark, nutty-smelling ale.

"Fiala! Get these over to Arthol's men in the corner."

A girl just a little over a foot taller than Arwynt hurries up to the bar, standing on tip-toes and taking the glasses, two in each hand. Hurry though she does, weaving amongst the tables, not more than a few drops slip down the sides of the glasses as she makes her way towards the table full of off duty town guardsmen. She stumbles, though, setting down the last of the tall glasses, nearly spilling it, while one of the men half-leaps to his feet, a hand on the girl's shoulder to steady her.

"Careful, there young miss," the guard says. He leans closer to the girl. "Have we... Haven't I seen you before? Not here, but--"

The girl ducks a curtsey, mumbling apologies, and scurries away, brushing past Legodor as she makes for the kitchens, blowing a stray lock of blonde hair from her eyes, and then pushing it up into her hair kerchief when it flops back over her eyes.

"Here, now, Fiala," the Innkeeper says, "there's more to--"

"Brother, did you forget?" A matronly woman with the same round-ish Perakarius nose pokes her head from the kitchen doorway. "You said Fiala could spend the afternoon with her friends today."

"Then who...?"

"Hey!" One of the guards is on his feet, a hand at his belt. "My belt pouch, it's gone!"

"I knew I'd seen her somewhere before," the other guard says, slamming his fist down on the table. He looks across the room, at the innkeeper. "She's that little ratling from the market square this morning!"

Upon hearing all this, Castinus slowly and cautiously pats his chest, so as to avoid anyone noticing. This is where his coin purse hangs beneath his shirt from around his neck. He doesn't know why he had the feeling that he *had* to check - he knows right well that she couldn't have taken it while he sat there - but still, he couldn't *not* check.

Dobrogost looks perplexed for a while, trying to figure out what's happening.
He automatically checks his coin purse, despite knowing it's empty of coins and full of pencils and chalk.

Then, a revelation strikes him.
Something unconceivable in Highforge: acquiring funds trough illegal activities.
But too much illegality, and people run behind you. Not looking amused (for humans, it's when they do look like dwarves look all the time), and probably willing to hurt you.
That's not a good perspective, either.
There must be something that's still socially acceptable. Like acquiring wealth from ruins, orcs, ogres, monsters and similar banes of the "peaceful" races.
What's the word the humans use for that? Adventurer, it is.
The closest translation in gnomish would sound as "professional trouble seeker". And in dwarven language? Is there a word in dwarven for that? Oh, yes. Tomb robber. Well, this is Threshold.
As they say, when you're in Thyatis, do like the thyatians.

Dorogost starts running behind Arwyn and Legodor, smiling.

[ooc] Loved that! [/ooc]

Castinus watches as they run by, thankful it's not him being chased, or having to do the chasing. 'My nose is clean and I'm keeping it that way', he thinks to himself.

Then he has to do a double-take as a gnome cheerfully runs by afterwards. 'None of your business, Castinus', he reminds himself. 'But a gnome just ran by - following the others - that's gotta mean something interesting doesn't it? You don't just watch a gnome run by and leave it at that, do you?'

Taking a quick survey of who's left in the room, Castinus attempts to get up and follow without looking like he's getting up to follow. However, he *knows* that everyone sees him getting up to chase the others.

[ooc] It would appear that Castinus also suffers from an acute curiosity, in addition to his paranoia. I'm sure they're related in his (in)ability to deal with the unknown. [/ooc]

Your charge through the kitchens does nothing to lessen the bustle. Fortunately, only curses follow you out the rear delivery door of the inn, and not pots or pans….

A flash of gold and echoing splash of footfalls in the puddles left from this morning’s light rain catch your attention, and you continue pursuit.

The alleyway spills out onto the Hostler’s Way. It isn’t as busy as usual, but then, the ship from Specularum, downriver, hasn’t arrived yet. Still, townsfolk and many in the tell-tale garb of travelers or adventurers dot the street. Voices raised in surprise halfway down the block draw your attention, and then you see a flash of white as a kerchief catches the breeze. Behind you, from the inn’s stable yard, the high piping whistle of the town guards goes up.

Dobrogost barely hears Arwynt's request.

He's already completely concentrated on analysing the pattern of movements among the crowd.
That should allow him to assess the direction taken by the young pickpocket.

Taking the foot traffic into account, the wind direction, the average distance between pedestrians, slant of the afternoon sunlight to interfere with pursuers....

She's headed more or less North, towards the marketplace.

Legodor's keen elven hearing picks up several colorful strings of curses coming from three different groups of travelers on the street, each further away than the last, further down the street. (It should be noted that one of the voices is higher pitched (and much more inventive in its curses) than those of the pedestrians)

Dobrogost unfreezes and states "Apparently, the embezzler went towards the market. She probably expects to be able to be able to mingle with the honest citizens. Does someone more vertically advantaged manage to see her?"
Then sees Legodor and says "oh.", before starting to run again.
