From Highforge To Threshold, Chryspatos
Scene XXIII - 2nd month in Eveskyr (Styrlen, 1st-28th, 990 AC)

You are escorted to the castle, which seems small but confortable, and meet the lord Alexic Chryspatitos, his wife Placidia Draconius and their son, a two years old baby, Belisarius.
The guards let the Lord see the letter from Bonth.
"We are happy to meet you - Alexic says - I suppose you have an interesting story to tell as envoys of Highforge to Threshold. Baron Sherlane told us to expect you. From the letter and the fact that Bonth is not with you, I assume we are about to meet more interesting stories. I will be grateful if you share with us what you know about the present situation. We have heard disturbing news about slavers and evil cults and we are a small community, so we need all the warnings we can get".
That said the Lord and the Lady lead you inside, giving you rooms to wash and rest before dinner. Baby Belisarius runs all around you and giggles.

During the dinner, Lucius will relate in a concise manner the information gathered about humanoid leaders arising, as well as the events in Specular. He will, however, avoid mentioning the role of the party. In case anyone else mentions it, he will in any case downplay his own role.

From Highforge To Threshold, Chryspatos
Scene XIV - 2nd month in Eveskyr (Styrlen, 1st-28th, 990 AC)

Lord Alexic thanks you for the informations and tells you he and his wife are willing to help against this Iron Ring in any way they can. They have heard too of people kidnapped in the wilds, and of humans allied with humanoids for nefarious purposes.
He also tells you there are a lot of unexplored ruins around his community, and also kobolds, goblins, harpies and more. If you want to do some explorations, he would be happy to help you. The road to Threshold however should be safe. It is still among the hills however so it will probably take a full day to cover the 9 miles, even on the road.

The guards tell Dim the situation has been relatively quiet lately, except for a wyvern who came too near to the town's sheeps a few days ago, but the soldiers managed to chase it away.

The following day you take the road to Threshold among the hills. You see several birds and some boars in the distance, and meet a small caravan going in the opposite way to Chryspatos. There are also two small quiet villages nested along the road, and a small inn in the middle. In the mid afternoon, when you are at probably less than 3 miles from Threshold, you notice someone walking among the trees.
It doesn't seem he was spying on you, but rather going to Threshold keeping the road in sight, but away from it.
He hears you coming, look at you and runs away in the woods, but before that you are able to take a good look at him. An orc warrior with a shield depicting a fist.

"I absolutely agree, this is very strange. I would suggest to abandon the road, go into the woods for 20-30 meters, and proceed inside the woods, parallel to the road. It would be slower and difficult, but we could avoid eventual ambushes prepared on the road."
In any case, Dim grab his weapon and proceeds with extreme caution, expecting an impeding attack.

In Threshold
Scene XV - 4th month (Bahrlen, Klarmont, early summer, 1st-28th, 990 AC)

The orc indeed has disappeared into the woods and you do not see him anymore. Kesh and Neim agreed to do as Dim suggested going toward Threshold, but there are apparently no attempts to stage an ambush, nor other signs of humanoids around. Taradain can find some traces of just the orc you saw, apparently running north.
Eventually you reach the bridge on the Windrush about 3 miles south of Threshold. Some guards are here to check travellers. When you show them your letter and tell them about the orc, they seems a little worried, but urge you to go on to the town and meet Baron Sherlane.
Threshold (map linked here) is a nice town which appears clean and orderly. The guards at the gates let you pass quickly but warns you that carrying weapons and armor while walking in the town is frown upon by the guards, even if the only prohibited weapons are bows, crossbows, polearms and axes. Casting spells without permission is also prohibited.
The guards also tell you the Baron is now in the Town Hall and you can meet him there.
There are many gardens between the houses as the new town has been built with the intention of having as much space as possible. It reminds you more of Highforge than of other human towns and cities. There are ashes from small bonfires around as yesterday, Klarmont 1st, was the night of the straw men when Traladarans burns little straw dolls after confessing their sins to them.
The Town Hall is at the centre of the town, near to the temples of the Church of Karameikos and the Church of Traladara and the Gold Dragon Inn. The guards lead you inside as soon as they see your letter. To meet the Baron you have to leave all weapons and spellbooks, but you can keep the armors for now.
Baron Sherlane is speaking with several people in one of the main halls of the building, when the guards point him to you. He soon receive you in a small side room with a desk. He is a man in his early 50s in good shape, with grey white hair, clean shaven, blue eyes, a prominent, jutting nose and unpretentious clerical robes.
"I'm glad you are here - the Baron says - I hope we will be able to decide a common strategy with Highforge. Recently I keep receiving reports of infested ruins, monsters and bandits all over. I already have several adventuring groups and guards around but I would need even more. I've also received disturbing reports about the tension between Traladaran and Thyatians in the south and maybe you have some insight about this too, as I heard some of you came from Specularum recently. Would you like to join me for dinner? I'd like to discuss all this and more with you and others. In the meantime, I have rooms for you at the Gold Dragon Inn, which is a good establishment, and run by a friend of mine".

In Threshold
Scene XV - 4th month (Bahrlen, Klarmont, early summer, 1st-28th, 990 AC)

The Gold Dragon Inn is just across the main square, the common hall bustling with commoners and adventurers, or would-be adventurers. The commoners offer tales of local treasures in exchange for beer. The innkeeper himself, Anthemio Paphcaris, was talking of the lost treasure of the wizard Gygar in the ruins of Castle Mistamere to the north to a group of wide-eyed adventurers.
Other people around added that the last who tried were sent running by harpies and kobolds.
More tales are exhanged about the Antilles castle, the ancient tomb, the ruins, the old caves, the black woods, the sanctuary, old Zadreth, lost Tuma. Mythical or real places, with someone always claiming to "know someone" who found it or died in it.
And tales about the monsters in the area: goblins, kobolds, gnolls, troglodytes, dragons, griffons, manticores, wyverns, feywings, harpies, beetles, spiders, undead, fairies, stirges, wolves, bears and mountain lions, and bandits.
Eventually a guard comes to summon you to dinner at the Town Hall.
Baron Sherlane is writing at the dinner table, while two other men are speaking to themselves. One is older, over 40 years old with black hair and beard, a great chain at his neck. The other is young, tall and strong, with brown hair and short beard, dressed lavishly in gold and green.
"Welcome in the Town Hall - the older man says - I am the mayor of Threshold, Arius Chryspatitos. I know you just met my niece and his wife in our village, not by magic but by pigeon message. Lord Halaran is finishing writing a letter to his niece Aleena in Thyatis, but in the meantime may I introduce you to Retameron Antonic? Famous local hero!"
The young man laughs at the title. "I wish to be - he says - in the meantime the wildlands are beating me and sending me running more often than not. And you? Had to fight on the road?

"Well dire wolves are quite common, but orcs, well, not so much - Retameron says - another thing worth investigating, as if me and Cardia would not have enough work already. I have to create another group as the previous one... disbanded. Interested in facing extremely dangerous situations?"

"I think our friends from Highforge already faced their share of dangerous situations - Baron Sherlane says, approaching - Sorry but I was finishing a letter to my niece. She is a wonderful 12 years old girl and live in Thyatis with her parents, my brother and his wife. I wish I could see her more often. Anyway I read somethign about you in a letter I received from Bonth, and something else from Alexic Chryspatitos. I need people to map the dominion and people to explore ruins and caves, but you may be likewise needed in Highforge and have previous arrangements with them, I understand. However you may be willing to aid Retameron while we await for Bonth to reach us here? But please do not feel any pressure to accept. These are dangerous times and I understand if you do not wish to take more risks".

"I would like to take a look at Antilles Castle as there are been some disturbing reports lately - Retameron says - and we are a bit short on manpower now, so any help is more than welcomed!"
"That would be the castle built by my father Antillus Halaran 50 years ago, when Traladara was still part of Thyatis - the Baron says - it's five miles west of Threshold, but was abandoned years ago. I sent adventurers from time to time to free it from critters, but now farmers and trappers living in the area have reported the presence of people inside, maybe humanoids or bandits. If you are willing to accompany Retameron and some of my soldiers, your help would be much appreciated!.
Kesh and Neim say too they would be willing to help Retameron in the exploration of the castle.
Then during the dinner the baron speaks with you about the current situation around Threshold and Highforge, with persistent rumors of stirring humanoids and some attacks on caravans, and people kidnapped or disappeared. As the communities in the borderlands and the wilderlands are often precarious, the Baron would like to have a census of all the population down to every farm and homestead, to have a better picture of the current situation.
To do this he needs more people than he has, so he hopes to obtain the help of the gnomes.

Antilles Castle
Scene XVI - 4th month (Bahrlen, Klarmont, early summer, 1st-28th, 990 AC)

Baron Sherlane and Retameron thank you, and the next day you are ready to go, with Retameron waiting for you outside the Gold Dragon inn next to a beautiful elven woman with black hair, dressed in green, and an halfling with curly brown hair, merry eyes, and a sling.
"May I introduce you to Cardia, extraordinaire magic user, and Sam Smolesal, infallible with his sling, my two current companions". - Retameron says. He is lavishly dressed in brigh colours as usual, orange, red and brown, but he also has armor, shield and sword of clearly very good quality.
"I took a better look at the map and Antilles castle is not as near as I believed - Retameron says - it's almost 13 miles on the road, midway to Verge. However the good baron will lend us horses and ponies, so we should be able to arrive there in the afternoon, if we keep a good pace..
Two soldiers, Arkan and Petrus, are waiting you by the Town Hall with horses and ponies. They also give you basic advices on how to ride if you are not familiar with horses, and they will accompany you. They wear the Halaran coat with a white castle on black.
You soon leave Threshold and go south on the Windrush river, passing the bridge after 3 miles but this time going west toward Verge. After little more than another mile you see the ruins of a big tower.
"It belonged to a wizard - Cardia says - I'd like to explore them a bit when we have some time".
"If we find the time without someone chasing us or we chasing someone, you mean", Retameron says.
The Windrush vale is dotted with farms, all well fenced, but moving west the hills become more wooded and wild. Still you meet some woodcutters, hunters and traders, always in small groups of at least two people.
No one had any problem on the road.
Kesh says just over the mountain to the south there is Mount Ben Dalen, which has some gnomish mines.
Baron Sherlane has also a hunting lodge nearby, and the woods have also more ancient ruins.
When you are finally approaching the castle, a group of three people comes toward you. Initially they stop and seem scared, but then a man waves to you when he see the Threshold soldiers. The leader seems to be a middle aged man, with fine clothes which are now dirty. With him there is a slightly younger woman and a younger man, wounded, who the other two are helping to walk.
"We were attacked by bandits, humans and goblins! - the middle aged man says - pray aid us good lords. They stole my wagon and horses and took also the other guard, a young man named Miro, and wounded Julius here!"

Antilles Castle
Scene XVI - 4th month (Bahrlen, Klarmont, early summer, 1st-28th, 990 AC)

"I can help you man", Kesh says, coming near the wounder man to heal him.
"Where did they go?" Retameron asks the merchant.
"They went north west on foot", the man replies.
"That's the direction of the empty castle indeed". Cardia says.
Retameron advises the three to go to the nearest farm, then you soon leave the road, taking an almost abandoned trail.
The halfling says he can see some faint traces of men and goblins.
Retameron makes you stop as soon as you can see the castle, telling you wo hide among the trees.
"Sun still up - he says - it takes an army to take a castle. From here, it appears empty but we have reasons to believe it is not. Cardia and Sam could approach and open the front door easily enough, but what if they have a sentry or a magical alarm, or archers? I'm open to any suggestion".

Antilles Castle
Scene XVI - 4th month (Bahrlen, Klarmont, early summer, 1st-28th, 990 AC)

"Indeed good dwarf that's the first thing to do - Retameron answers - and I think Sam and Taradain could be the best people for this kind of job"
Sam nods, but Neim also intervenes "I could be silent too and I may be able to find weak spots in the building, if there is any" the gnome say.
Retameron agrees to let Neim go too.
"I wish I could fly - Cardia says - that would make much easier to take a look from above"
"You will learn that spell eventually" Retameron says, smiling.
Sam leads Taradain and Neim around the castle to take a look at it.
They return after some time.
"There are many windows on the first floor - Sam says - some open and some closed, but all hardly big enough to let a man, or even a hin, pass through. We also saw human figures inside and we are pretty sure they did not see us".
"The battlements are empty however and all the second floor seem deserted. It has some windows, all closed and barred". Neim says.
"So it seems they are hiding inside the castle rather than trying to defend it - Retameron says - are you thinking what I'm thinking? I can see a way to enter unnoticed!"
