Almagra: Kingdom of Vrocia PBP Campaign: In Character Thread

Introduction
The Kingdom of Vrocia. The Northern Province of Ifrorian. Surrounded by the impassible Icewall Mountains to the east, the dangerous Northern Icemounts to the north, the Stroham Mountains of the Ailaithian Empire's Sadrea Province to the west, and the Wrijyax Mountains to south, it is late spring in the deep mountain valley. The worst of the yearly floods have swept down the rivers of the valley to swell up the lakes before the summer heat.

The Shores of Lake Hireta. The Town of Kara's Vale. It is to here that you now find yourself, for whatever reason has brought you. Long known as a town for adventurers, Kara's Vale is unique amongst the standard stilt villages and towns of the Ifrorian Province in that it built more like a traditional elven town. It has existed near the shores of Lake Hireta longer than even the Old Town of Ifror has stood in the high hills of the Wrijyax Mountains.

Kara's Vale is built around a massive tree known as Gacrena's Tree. It stands as tall as a redwood but its place in the natural world remains a mystery. It is believe by the locales that the tree was placed here long ago by a nature goddess, Gacrena, and that the spot is sacred to her. Some believe she was once mortal and was raised to godhood by a more powerful goddess. Others believe she is a primorial being of immense powerful, as dangerous as she is beautiful.

Regardless, the tree became a becon of hope for mortals and Kara's Vale grew around it and up it. Dozens of tough wooden buildings have been built on the tree using its natural branches and wooden knots. In several places, large tree animals once lived in burrowed out holes in the trunk, but these hollows were quickly controlled by elves, humans, and halflings alike. Of course, there were natural tree holes, as well. Most of these became the homes of the town's elite (depending of where the holes were located).

The higher up one lives on the tree the more prosperous the citizen.

While Gacrena's Tree is, by far, the tallest and fullest of the trees of Kara's Vale, there are dozens more that surround it. In the past, the small forests to the southwest and the northeast once encircled all of Kara's Vale along the shores of Lake Hireta. The copse of massive trees are home to many long-time families from various races who have created an industry for supporting adventurers. Kara's Vale has more than its fair share of shops dedicated specifically for adventurers and other travellers. All of these trees are interconnected by a complex series of rope bridges or wood-plank walkways.

It was the need for food for the growing town that turned much of the lower lands into rice fields and grazing land, although spring flooding makes rice farming a dangerous business. To the town's northwest are a series of middling hills that are good for growing other crops such as maize and millet and even some potatoes and turnips in the higher places. Wheat is rarely grown near Kara's Vale since the eastern half of the province is a better place for such crops. Kadstow wheat is the standard although bread in Kara's Vale is more often created from nuts.

The town has numerous inns and flophouses for weary travellers, but the best of the best is The Harper and Axe, which is located half-way up the northern side of Gacrena's Tree. It is a crescent-shaped structure with a hardy clientele of adventurers. Even before you arrived in town, other travelers tell you that it is best place to stay although space is both cozy and limited.

Siliarilas checked his pack one more time. He was now set with directions to the Harper and Axe and an idea that adventures should await him. His job was difficult at the best of times, but its had added issues without the means to support himself and his hobbies. Checking his pack one last time, he set off on the path that he was given. After a bit of time he looks inside the tavern and sees...

After stabling his two horses in the communal stable, Big Tim begins walking back down the hill, towards the base of Gacrena's Tree, where the walkway begins. Tim is carrying his shield, which bears his family's coat of arms, casually on his left arm, and his massive sword is on his back, in a military-style baldric; the sword has a peace string wrapped around it, as per the local custom. His studded leather armor, which bears the heraldry of the Scarlet Cross, is partially covered by a fine, silk jacket of the latest style and fashion, that Tim wears open and un-buttoned. He has the look of an off-duty guardsman about him, although those with knowledge of heraldry would recognize him as a knight. Tim is headed to The Harper and Axe, where he has been told he can find the best ale in the region. He is light of step, and wears a becoming smile, as is his habit when his thoughts dwell upon unsettling matters.

Tim's thoughts are on his finances; he is heavily in debt to his father, who continues to fund Tim's excessive lifestyle. With no wars to fight, the life of a knight is an expensive one, to be sure. Tim's thoughts have more than once recently turned to the possibility of becoming an adventurer for hire, of seeking his own fortune in the dark places of this world, at risk to life and limb. Although he has no doubt as to his physical prowess, Tim ponders the possibility of the unknown. There are worse things than Orcs in the far reaches of the world; the horrors are innumerable, ranging from dark sorcerers to mythical beasts. Still, the prospect of earning his own place in this world has caused his thoughts to linger more and more upon a life of uncertainty and adventure. The inn that he is headed to is known for more than just its ale; The Harper and Axe is known to be frequented by adventurers, and by those looking to hire adventurers.

"It'll be a real shame to get my new jacket dirty," Tim muses, inwardly. "But such is the price of fame and of glory." And with that thought lingering in his mind, he begins the journey up the walkway, toward the high roost of The Harper and Axe.

"It'll be a real shame to get my new jacket dirty," Tim muses, inwardly. "But such is the price of fame and of glory." And with that thought lingering in his mind, he begins the journey up the walkway, toward the high roost of The Harper and Axe.

At first glance, the path of bridges and walkways looks haphazard to Big Tim's eyes. But soon realizes there is method to the madness. Each 'section' of the Gacrena's Tree is its own tier with the lowest tier being built around 10 feet off the ground with bamboo stilts and solid rope block and tackle to haul up goods and even people to higher tiers. The cost to be hauled up to great for Tim, so he is forced to make do climbing the many wooden stairs and even a few rope ladders. There are many shops, especially for food and heavier goods, that it would be impractical to take higher.

The next few tiers are more organized but less solid. mainly, he finds a handful of open-air walkways with rope handrails, pulled taut. The height isn't dizzying but sleeping here would be risky. Tim could imagine himself rolling out of a shanty's cot and falling to the ground below. There seems to be a lot of poorer folk living in these lower tiers, trying to build something without the protection of the massive tree's branches, higher up.

The next fee tiers are well-constructed wooden levels with solid steps from tier to tier and real homes and shops that are built on heavy branches. The best homes are near the trunk and some seem to be a part of the tree. The buildings at the edges of the branches are more shanty-like, but still better than the constructions below. The walkways are protected by sturdy wooden handrails and a massive lift connects all these levels. The lift is free for locals and visitors are allowed to use it if they help locals in need. Tim helps carry a tawny man's heavy baskets of goods and gets to ride up to central part of the tree. The lift creaks and sways as it rises, yet the locals take no notice.

"Thank you, sir," the man thanks Tim. "The inn is up on the next tier. Enjoy your stay on the tree." He shakes Tim's big hand and shows no discomfort with the half-ogre's appearance.

Tim finds his way up a massive circular staircase that hugs the side of the tree. He notes that the stairs use several branches as anchors. They almost look as if they were grown for the purpose. The inn isn't hard to find after that. He is greeted warmly at the door and steps into a lively place full of various races of both genders (and a few genders that he's not sure of).

"Welcome to The Harper and The Axe," a short human, no, a tall halfling greets him. "I am Aerona Legrand, your host. Are you looking for food, a place to sleep, or both?" She gives him the once over. "I see you've peace bonded your weapon. That is good. No fighting here. Well, not without a proper wager and a signed contract. But definitely no real bloodshed." There is a crash from the back of the inn both Tim and Aerona turn to see one of her servers slap a male patron and dump what looks like a second drink over his head. The man sputters then laughs and then tries to kiss the woman. She pokes him in the eye and he bellows in outrage.

"Get him out of here!" Aerona yells. The man tries in vain to push off several other patrons and a big human who i nearly as tall as Tim. The drunk finds himself push to one side off the room and is tossed out an open window. He yells as he falls and the crowd roars in approval. Aerona sees the look on Tim's face and says, "That is what happens when you misbehave in my inn. Now, what can I get you?"

The central tree of Kara's Vale reminds Evermithe greatly of similar treehomes that he's encountered on other world dominated by elves. However, Gacrena's Tree has moved beyond the traditions of elven ways and has become more of a patchwork of various designs from various races. The influence of humans is obvious and awkward looking while the influences of halflings and gnomes work better with the dominate elven theme of the various tiers of the tree's layout. Evermithe sees a handful of orcish designs -- mainly phallic -- carved into posts and walls. He sees only one truly dwarven made construct. A tall, thin standing stone carved like a totem in the style of the barbaric plains peoples but depicting deities that are obviously dwarven. It is suspended between two teirs and held in place with strong vines that have been lashes to the surrounding structures. It is almost beautiful in a crude sort of way -- not out of place in Kara's Vale at all.

The mass of peoples climbing up and down the tree is chaotic and a bit frantic. There is little serenity. The noise is soon ringing in Evermithe's ears. The locals don't seem to mind, not even the elves. The elven bloodlines in the town seem to be mainly high and wood, with a great deal of intermixing. He sees several families of wild elves selling pelts and wild edibles to traders on the lowest tiers, but they don't seem to be part of the community. He finds that there are gray elves living in the town but once he spots them, he quickly loses them in the crowded ant-like movements of the populace.

The chaos diminishes the higher Evermithe climbs but the noise seems to rise with him. A local man offers to sell him a odd hat that blocks out "some of the noise." The design is odd and only when the man shows Evermithe how to wear "them" does the war wizard understand. The hat is not a hat but what the man calls "muffs" that cover just the ears. He offers them for a gold piece. As the man hagggles, Evermithe notices a small elven child looking at him. Her skin is odd, a pale bluish and her hair is a brilliant golden brown. At first, he thinks she's a drow child but when she looks at him there is an ethereal twinkle in her eyes.

"What do you say?" the human almost pleads, "Seven silver? it's the best I can do." He grabs a hold of Evermithe's arm meekly to try to keep the elf's attention.

The momentary distraction causes the war wizard's eyes to shift away from the girl for a few seconds. When he looks back, she is gone, but he can hear what sounds like a little one's laughter along with what sounds like windchimes.

"Sir," the man says. "Mister elf, sir. Are you all right?"

The way up through the tiers of the town's central tree is quite the sight. A unique tree district where each tier is full of peoples of many races. There are elves, humans, halflings, gnomes, and even the occasional dwarf or half-orc. So many 'opportunities'.

One of the travelers on the road had told him to "ask for Aerona," the inn's owner. Another had told him, "don't try to out drink ol' Rumah. She's got an iron gut and will give you a temperance lecture at the same time."

After a bit of time he looks inside the tavern and sees...

The inn is full of merriment and there looks to be a celebration going on. Or at least a wild party. And it's not even midday yet.

As Siliarilas enters, a fight breaks out near the back of the inn and the main antagonist is tossed out a nearby window. It seems a harsh punishment. The crowd raises their glasses to the big man who tossed the lout through the window. He holds his hands up in what looks like a prayer to a violent god.

Standing in front of Siliarilas near the door is a large man dressed in an uniform of some kind. Beside him is a halfling woman who give the fight's victor a thumbs up. She says something to the man in front of Siliarilas. Then she sees Siliarilas and welcomes him. "I am Aerona. Have you come for the Fest of the Spirits? Are you hungry? All are welcome here as long as you don't mistreat my staff or other guests."

Tim looks at Aerona with concern. "Is there a soft place for him to land? Drunken buffoonery seems a small crime to merit a broken arm, leg, or neck." Nevertheless, he wears a smile, and adds, "of course, rules are rules, I suppose. And harsh punishments make good deterrents." Tim sighs deeply. "What I really need is employment. My term in the king's army has run its course, and the lifestyle to which I am accustomed is expensive. I don't suppose there are any bandits around here in need of rounding up?" Tim smiles brightly, trying not to let his stress and worry reveal themselves.

<Evermithe keeps his coin split up among several locations on his person so a pick pocket cannot clean him out with one swipe>

The way up becomes less chaotic, as Evermithe finds his way up to The Harper and Axe. Along the way, he continues to hear the laughter of a small child in his ears but when he turns to look down to make sure no little urchin is trying to steal something off him, he finds no child nearby. As he comes to the last set of stairs, he notes the same small child standing on the upper landing above him. She tilts her head and smiles at him once more. Evermithe watches in amazement as a three locals walk right through the space she is standing in without even noticing her.

The little girl seems to vanish from sight and then there is the sound of laughter and bells all around Evermithe that no one else on the walkway seems to hear. The sound is disconcerting but not filled with menace. Then he hear's a lilting voice speak to him in elvish, "Mother welcomes you to her tree, Evermithe Woodshadow." His senses are drawn to an open space beyond the edge of walkway. A mote of light floats in the air only 20 feet away. "She hopes you find what and who you are looking for. He was here several days ago, but has been called back into the wilderness. You will find him in time. The path will guide you."

The bells continue to chime as the wind rises and the laughter becomes a hum of insect wings. Others around Evermithe begin looking at him oddly as he stands there. Then suddenly, a shout rises from above and a man falls down from the next tier into a large net near Evermithe on the other side of the walkway. The momentary distraction is enough that when he looks back to where the mote of light had been, it is gone. The wind still rises but the laughter is gone. Evermithe hears the sound of thunder in the distance and tastes moisture hanging in the air.

The man in the net curses as he lies face first in the net. "Da-amn {hic} y-you, B-baghdas-sar!" The man is obviously drunk. The Harper and Axe sits above along a huge branch built stoutly along the massive tree's trunk.

"do not worry about that old lout," Aerona assures him. "He is not dead, although he'll wish he was if he steps a foot in hear again without an apology." She points to the big man who tossed the drunk out the window. "Baghdassar never misses. Look for yourself if you want."

She motions for a waiter to help the girl who was accosted, clean up the mess left from the ruckus. "If you're looking for work, you should take a look at one of the post boards. Each tier has one, but there is little order to them. There is one nearby, but it has very little on it, right now. You might have better luck in Upper Cen, near the top of the tree. The Treegard is always looking for new recruits." She pauses. "And there are always bandits making trouble near town. Then tend to come and go like a flood, and do almost as much damage in the outlying areas."

"Don't forget about that Oswin fellow," a nearby patron says to Aerona.

"Ah yes, Oswin Edmugh. That crazy fool is looking to start a war." She motions for Tim to bend down so she he can hear her clearly. She stands up on a chair and talks right into his ear. "Oswin Edmugh is a local merchant who has many trading concerns in Kara's Vale. He's had a run of bad luck lately due to a highwayman named Baldar. This human robber, well, most think he is human. No one is really sure. Anyway, this robber preys on caravans and travelers along the road from here to Witcher's Bridge. Oswin wants the man brought to justice, which won't be easy. Baldar is said to have a small army of men who help him take down even the largest caravans."

She sits down in the chair. "now, i don't like bandits either, but Baldar hasn't attacked the town, yet. I don't know if it would be a good idea to rile him up. Yes, he has a tendency to kill those that don't surrender to him, but all the more reason to be careful. Besides, the Treegard has been hunting him for months with no luck."

Evermithe hears high revelry in the in the inn before he reaches the door. Music is playing and voices are singing. He finds the door ajar, and an elven man standing just inside the doorway. Nearby a very large human, maybe, is bent over listening to a halfling woman speak into his ear. She is trying hard to make sure he can hear her over the merriment. He is listening intently with a serious look on his face. Another large human stands by the open window the drunkard was likely tossed out of. He is toasting the crowd gathered in The Harper and Axe. He seems to be well known and well liked. He gets pats on the back and handshakes from many.

Each table seems to be occupied in one form or another. There are humans and halflings aplenty and numerous elves as well -- most of them appear to be highbloods. A few obviously have human blood due to the coarse whiskers on their faces. A plump female dwarf drinks her fill near the back of the inn. She seems to be taking on all-comers. Sitting at a long bar, perpendicular to the doorway along the left side of the inn is a human warrior wearing metal armor. A quarterstaff leans against the bar next to him. Next to him is a tall wood elf who is whispering seductively in the ear of one of the human barmaids. Her face is flush, but she beams at him with her eyes wide. Then she laughs and pats his arm. He sidles his arm around her and she gives him a kiss on the cheek before pulling away to continue her work.

The last thing Evermithe notices is a tall, thin elven woman standing off to his right in the near corner. He almost didn't notice her at first. Once he does, however, she becomes hard not to stare at. Her skin is a mix of dark-green with dusky blue, mottled together. Her ears are very long and her hair is a shocking red. She origins are baffling. She is not a drow. She is dressed like a warrior with fine leathers and two blades and baldric full of daggers. Her thin frame hides her obvious strength, as her primary blade is heavy-looking longsword. She is not alone. Next to her is halfling man who sits cross-legged on the floor next to her. He appears to be dozing or, maybe, meditating. His garb reminds Evermithe of home.

The barmaid who had been flirting with the wood elf notices him standing in the doorway. "All our tables are full, sir. But you can sit at the bar or see if someone will let you squeeze in somewhere. Can I get you anything?"

Evermithe catches both her scent and the aroma of cooked food. A burly man comes in through the door behind him carrying a large platter over his head. "The buffet has arrived!" He moves to the bar and is followed by a stream of foodstuffs on large platters and deep bowls.

The crowd cheers and they all try to find a place to sit. They start chanting in unison, "Fest of the Spirits! Fest of the Spirits!"

"If you want to partake, you better find a seat! Of course, it is okay to sit on the floor!" the barmaid shouts to him over the din. "Tonight's meal is on Gacrena! However, if you want something specific from our menu or something to drink, you'll have to pay for it! Any other money you want to pay goes in the donation box outside!"

"Welcome," a large man greets Evermithe with a rough handshake before moving on to the next person. The platters of food barely make it on to the bar or tables before plates and bowls are passed around and food is portioned out for all those gathered. A plate passes into his hands and is soon filled with cooked meat, bread, and vegetables.

"I have come for food, drink and merriment. It seems that I will see plenty of all here. So, do you normally throw your guests out of windows, or was this a special occasion?" Without waiting for an answer, Siliarilas orders a bowl of stew and a mug of ale, and proceeds to find a table in the corner. He takes out a scroll and begins to read quietly.

Evermithe finds a spot at the bar for now ordering a mild lager <light ale>
pulling out his feast gear he partakes in some of the feasting offered up and requests a room for the night
he sits back and makes a sweep of the room making mental note of those present and might possibly be of assistance

Tim asks Aerona, "If the Treegard is hunting him, then it's obvious that the town's legal authority believes that he should be brought to justice. If the Treegard have been unsuccessful, then it makes perfect sense that the man would personally offer a reward for Baldar's capture. Where can I find this Oswin fellow?" Before Aerona can answer, Tim stops the barmaid and says, "Pint of Ale, Round of Bread, Half-round of Cheese," and takes a seat at an adjacent table. ~It wouldn't be polite to sit at HER table, without having been asked,~ Tim muses inwardly.

"We have an ale, but I wouldn't call it light, Aerona says with a smile. "A tankard is four coppers. We also have a nice glass of mead for 1 silver. We also have a bitter and a stout, served by the tankard. The bitter is 5 coppers while the stout is 6 coppers. The Demon Pearl Bitter is quite popular here. The Noxious Four Ale is for those with strong stomachs. The Red Eclipse Stout is a favorite of my dwarven customers. The mead, Savage Kiss, is highly regarded in Kara's Vale.

"As for a room, I'm afraid we don't have individual rooms here. There is a common sleeping area through that back curtain in a hollow of the tree. Its cozy and it free. However, you never know who will be sleeping next to you. Weapons aren't allowed back there, but we have a storage room where you rent a locked trunk. You can choose to pay 1 copper to sleep here in the main room. We have several cots that can be put up once we close for the night. The floors have a cantrip on them that cleans it with a command word, so it is more comfortable than the hollow room."

The barmaid brings him a second helping with some crusty almond bread and big bowl of soup.

Before Aerona can answer, Tim stops the barmaid and says, "Pint of Ale, Round of Bread, Half-round of Cheese," and takes a seat at an adjacent table. ~It wouldn't be polite to sit at HER table, without having been asked,~ Tim muses inwardly.

Tim finds that most of the tables are full, but he manages to find an empty table in the back. he takes up more than half the space for small table and the chair is tight. An elf who came in after him sits nearby. Aerona runs through the drink selection for the elf man while the barmaid brings Tim an ale that smells, overwhelming. Likely the Noxious Four Ale that Aerona mentions to the elf.

The barmaid also puts down a plate with several types of bread. "You have the option of pinenut bread or an almond bread or an orange sourdough. That's my favorite. We don't have any cheese rounds but feel free to look through the buffet platters on the bar. There might be some cheese left if you hurry." She slips away as quickly as she had arrived with his food. The inn is full and more people come in for the festivities. More platters arrive with fruit and nuts and something pungent that Tim thinks smells like it could be cheese. Platters are passed around from table to table and Tim soon finds his table full -- a platter with braised fowl alongside several bowls of steaming vegetable stew. Several patrons sit with him for a few minutes swapping jokes and "praising the goddess for the bounty she has given us!" Then they move on. It is chaotic.

It takes Aerona nearly ten minutes to get back to Big Tim where he is now seated. "I never answered your question," she says. Oswin isn't one for festivals. He's likely at home. It's not far, but you might want to wait until morning. He doesn't take kindly to visitors just dropping by. I'll have a message sent to him if you like?"

buying the 4 CP Ale and a spot in the main room 1 CP
he offers up his own Tankard for the server to fill and retrieves a slice of bread to mop up the bowl of stew he's managed to snag as the pot came by before
taking a helping of cheese and nuts
since he's at the end of the bar he shifts to put his back to the wall and enjoys the revelry going on

"Yes, please, that would be great. I'd love to meet with him, but I would not want to barge in unannounced, therefore, a message sent beforehand would be 'just what the healer ordered.' And I guess I'll be needing a room for the night, as well. What's the tab likely to be for those two services?"

"I'll get a runner to go tel him to come here once the festival has died down a bit. If you wish to pay for that service, put it in the collection box out front. Whatever you'd like to share with the goddess," she replies. "We don't have private rooms here. There is the communal tree hollow in the back, which is free for all to use. You'll have to store your weapons in the storeroom. Or you can pay 1 copper to sleep here in the main room once the festivities are over."

She doesn't wait to see what Tim decides, as a plate of food is knocked over on the floor. She and staff move quickly to clean up the fallen food. No one is ejected for what turns out to be a simple accident.

The crowd continues to change as the day progresses. Patrons come and go as they please, eating their fill. Some, but not all, donate to the collection box, which is guarded by the big man who threw the drunkard out the window into the net below.

The revelry isn't contained inside the inn. The walkways become filled with various races all celebrating the festival. The merriment lasts well into the night. Once the sun sets, the locals head back to their homes with their bellies stuffed. A large crowd settles into the inn's hollowed out tree-room. A few others wait around for the common room to be cleaned and cleared. Two tables are left for late-night patrons, but the rest are either pushed to one of the corners or moved into the storage room. Cots are brought out for those who wish to pay the single copper piece to sleep in the room.

OOC: More tomorrow...

Tim takes the Orange Sourdough, the Stout tankard, and when the platter comes by with the pungent stuff, he grabs some of that as well. He also takes a bowl of vegetable stew from the platter. He hands the barmaid 2 gold coins, and says, "The first gold is to cover the bread and the ale, and a night's respite in the main room, as well as a tip for you. The second gold is for the collection box, praise be to the goddess!"

Tim settles back in his chair, enjoying the festivities, waiting for news of Oswin.

The wood elf greets Siliarilas warmly, "Please sit and be welcome." He motions to the empty chair next to Evermithe. "The Goddess sees us and wishes us to be full of merriment and food." He has thick white hair and and is dressed in the garb of a ranger. "My name is Foredryn Iliphar Morxina, but you may call me Fore. It is a nickname that I have allowed Aerona to bestow upon me." He watches the barmaid out of the corner of his eye, lustfully. "She often nicknames her regular patrons."

Fore eats from his own plate before asking Silarilas, "Have you come to the Vale for the festival or for something else? You look capable. I am looking for boon companions to travel with on the road."
