Lucius remains where he is, draws sword and dagger, and start's sweeping any tall grass in his vicinity with his sword, keeping the dagger in reserve in case he is disarmed or forced into a grab.

Scene III - 2 years later (Buhrlen, Felmont, Summer, 11-12th day, 992 AC)

There are several patches of grab grass indeed, but working together you manage to cut it and free Bofar.
"The hills have many dangers - Juvlak says with a smile - the grass is one of the minor ones".
In the afternoon you continue your travel to the north among the hills, and then stop for the night in another clearing protected by some rocks.
Taradain has to wake everyone during her turn because three feywings begin circling above you, obviously searching for a meal. As soon as you are ready to fight however they flee, understanding your group is too numerous.
The next day, you continue north, then slowly turn to the east. By mid morning, Juvlak turns back to speak to you.
"Humans in a small valley down to the right - he says - a woman and two men, apparently running up to escape someone, maybe goblins. Revealing our presence could put us and our mission in danger, but maybe you do not feel like leaving them to their fate. Consider however they could be cultists or bandits or slavers, and the goblins may have a right to hunt them down".
Bonth nods, then tells you to leave the horses and take a closer look. Karto and Kesh remain with the animals, while the rest of you tries to see who is coming.
Bofar, Lucius, Taradain and Dim have to hold a gasp when they see the two men. They are Arkan and Petrus, the two Threshold soldiers who accompanied you to Antilles Castle two years ago. But the more surprised is Dorn, as the woman is Elwyn, a cleric of Chardastes from Threshold and fellow member of the Church of Karameikos, and he knows her quite well!
The three have torn clothes and are clearly almost out of breath, running up the hill toward you. Beyond, you can now hear some noises, growls.
"Not good - Juvlak says - elite goblin troops on dire wolves. Probably more than 10. I have an idea on whom their commander may be. It would be best to leave the three humans to their fate. If we defend them we will probably win due to our number, but some goblins will certainly flee away and warn the others about our presence. It will be easier if you do not look."

"When they are closer", Juvlak replies, looking carefully at the approaching goblins.
There are indeed 11 goblins on dire wolves, one in the front, apparently their chief, with hair and face painted green.
"Is Thorn - Juvlak says - one of the chiefs who opposed me and pushed for an alliance with the Leptarians. If we could capture him.."
In the meantime the human woman turns to face the goblins. She is a very beautiful dark haired young woman, with a lavander tunic showing the symbol of a white bell.
"Please violence is not needed here - she says to the goblins - we came here to parley with the Nightstalkers and find the slavers who have kidnapped people in the Barony of Threshold".
The goblin in the front laughs. "Slavers are our allies now - he says - so we will bring you to them. But the men can die!", the goblin says, and raises an hand to order an attack.

Lucius advises Bonth to order an attack on the goblins. Saving the humans and capturing the goblin chief are both worthy goals.

Bonth and Juvlak nods and prepare their range weapons, but Elwyn down there is the first one to act, blocking the goblin chief and three more goblins with her magic. The wolves, confused, stop running.
In the meantime one of the goblins notices you and cries in alarm, but he and another nearby are soon hit by a circle of darkness sent by Gila. The gnome automaton, Gabriel, shoot darts from his arms, but only hits the shield of a goblin.
Taradain hits the leather armour of another one. Lucius misses with the crossbow, while Bofar hits and wounds a wolfrider.
Milo and Talla hits only armors, while Bonth wounds another goblin.
Juvlak hits the shield of another. Agnja sends a magic missile against a goblin, hitting him fully.
Blago too does something and a goblin and a wolf fall down.
With 3 wounded and five fallen, the goblins immediately lose any will to fight. The wounded turn their wolves and run away, while the two still capable of fighting try a desperate dash to pick up their fallen chief...
"We should stop them - Juvlak says - aim to wound them!"

Lucius attacks one of the goblins who are trying to help the chief -- with the crossbow if he's too far for close combat, otherwise he charges into melee with his sword.

Yes he would not reach the mounted goblins in time, so ranged weapons are the only options.

Dorn load his sling trying to aim at the remaining Goblins, probably hoping that if he hits the damage would be enough not to kill

Several darts flies to the 2 goblin warriors, and many hit. Agnja, Dim, Lucius and Taradain shoots are absorbed by armors or shields, but Gabriel, Bofar and Talla manage to wound the goblins.
Yet what really stops them is a spell from Gila, which drops the two goblins from their wolves.
Elwyn, Petrus and Arkan rush toward them and the wolves growl but run away. Juvlak and Bonth lead you down too.
Eventually you have captured Thorn, the goblin chief, and five of his warriors. One more goblin awakes from Blago's magical slumber and run away with his wolf. All the other wolves have escaped.
"Good news is we are really a formidable force, now 18 strong - Juvlak says - bad news is now the Nighstalkers will send an army to hunt us".
"Thank for your aid - Elwyn says when you approach, while Petrus and Arkan tie the prisoners - we were probably doomed without you. Dorn, it is you?"
Elwyn is happy to see a fellow cleric from Threshold, and Petrus and Arkan are happy and surprised to see Lucius, Bofar, Taradain and Dim, and Kesh later when you return near the horses where you left the gnome cleric and Karto.
Elwyn explains she was sent by Baron Sherlane to Eltan's Spring, a small town north east of Threshold, to search for a party of slavers who had attacked isolated farms in the region. Elwyn had hoped to find allies or at least informations among the Nightstalkers goblins, as she knew they had good relations with Highforge, and was surprised and dismayed to see that they are instead mobilizing for war and hostile.
"The party of slavers we are hunting is commanded by a woman cleric who has humans, kobolds, goblins and thouls among her followers", Arkan says, looking meaningfully at you.
You suddenly remember two years ago, with Retameron, Cardia and Sam in Antilles Castle! You met a woman cleric, apparently not hostile, but Retameron suspected she was indeed up to something.
"No time to chat staying still - Juvlak says - we have to interrogate the prisoners and then move quickly!".
"I can befriend one of them with magic", Agnja says.
"That would be useful - Bonth says - but we should also talk normally with this Thorn, hearing what he has to say".
"Nothing good, probably.." Juvlak comments bitterly.

Thorn is not very cooperative. He insults Juvlak, calling him names, traitor and so on. He just says the Nighstalkers are on the war path now and even if you kill him, you will be all butchered within a week.
Agnja in the meantime has charmed to another goblin, and learned from him that Thorn and another chief, Kuhun, have found powerful allies, the priestess, the wizard and the Black One, and they have a plan to lure some important human nobles in the hills, then kills them in an ambush. Thorn and Kuhun now control all the Nighstalkers. He does not know the nature of the Black One, but he say is powerful and even the priestess and the wizard fear him.
"Kuhun is a powerful wicca - Juvlak says - and these three others must be humans of that organization, the Iron Ring".
"The priestess is probably the one we were searching for", says Elwyn in passable dwarvish.
"Now we have to run to our friends, because the Nightstalkers will chase us. I advise you not to kill Thorn, because it would create more determined enemies for us. If we can defeat the Iron Ring, I could be able to win the Nightstalkers back. But if I let humans kill a prisoner, the other goblins will never accept me back", Juvlak says.

So what shall we do with them? Just release them and let every goblin and Iron Ring agent in the area know the size and composition of our group. I do not think so. Dead goblin tells no tales.

"You noticed that four ran away? They are enough to tell every goblin about the size and composition of this group. Anyway the simple fact we were able to defeat 10 wolfriders would be enough to send an army against us, and that is what they will do. Our only hope is to obtain the help of the friends we are going to meet tonight. But if you want to go your way, please does dwarf. I do not care for Thorn. Yet if you do, I will leave you, and you will die", Juvlak says with a smug smile.

"If you mean to use him as an hostage, that is not how it works with goblins - Juvlak says - the others wolfriders would dishonour him by accepting any kind of exchange with enemies, so they will let you kill him. Bringing him with us as a prisoner could make sense only to avoid having to fight him again. Probably we could take the prisoners to my friends. They could be able to detain them for some time".

"Not what I said - Juvlak replies - I do not care about him, but I cannot keep on guiding you if you kill him. Anyway result is the same, let's continue with the prisoners".
"Settled, let's continue quickly, prisoners in the middle", Bonth says.
"Anyway, I could not allow you to kill him or any other goblin prisoner - Elwyn says firmly - your intervention saved me and my escort, but I am a cleric of Chardastes, and we do not believe in violence. It is permitted only in self defense and only the less possible amount of it. That's why I blocked them with my powers".
"I must agree with her - Kesh says - the Nighstalkers are not our enemies yet, as far as Highforge is concerned. And anyway us gnomes always tried to prevent any confrontation from escalating too much. The scorched earth policy Thyatians have too often employed against humanoids in the last decades is one of the reasons why Entropic, vengeful cults and organizations are rising among them".
