"I think some should stay to help defending the village, and also to make less conspicuous the disappearance of some of us. We will ask the local people about the wizard and where he could be found", Retameron says.
Arteris and Desmond agree, and Taran and Alexei start asking around, while others of your group go the the center of the village.
The local Lord has sent a runner to his castle, hoping he could bring more men before the night. In the meantime he orders to strenghten the fortification of the village for what is possible. Arteris and Desmond, presenting themselves as specialized soldiers headed to Radlebb Keep, offer their help to the Lord and the headman of the village, both called Mavrov and distantly related.
Ludovico, Nicola and Sara in the meantime took care of interrogating the orcs and goblins taken prisoners.
"We should speak with the villagers to learn as much as possible, so let's spread to do that. Please all choose a destination", Retameron says. Around you there is the Lord with his men, the headman with some villagers, some children hanging around, the Bountiful Tappe Tavern which is also a inn and a store, the stables, where someone should take your horses, and about 15 more buildings surrounded by gardens.
In the meantime Keio has become quite a curiosity for several local inhabitants.

I'll go and talk to children, Bofar and walks to them.
Greetings lads and lassies, you have exciting times here. Shouldn't you be hiding somewhere or are you brave enough to take part in action?

The local children are delighted to speak with a dwarf. They have seen some passing by, but not often one stops to speak to them. Some ask things like if it is true you eat gems and metals and why you do not live always underground as the rest of your race, or really Highforge has streets paved in gold. But amid the questions, they are also willing to speak about the wizard, Thegran nor Theddi, not Tharrigren, they are not sure about the name, but the surname is Dentiata. They say he has built a tower 3 miles to the east of Sisak. They say he has orc minions, and if you are bad, he will come get you. They say he took two people yesterday, but then they argue if they were bad or not.
They say Dentiata has a tiger which eats people. They say Skelly, the orfan stable boy, has spied Dentiata and the wizard did not catch him.

Bofar explains a few things about dwarves to the children. And then asks where he can find this Skelly.

The children says Skelly is always at the stables. When you go there, behind the inn, Ludovico is there already, bringing the horses, but he has not asked much to Skelly yet.
The boy is a 12 years old redhead strong for his age, he seems timid but, when asked about Dentiata, says indeed he has been near the tower. It takes some time to make him describe a bit more, but eventually he says around the tower there is a barn and a chicken coop. The barn has a big riding horse and 8 ponies, for the orcs who live in the tower. There is also a young woman living in the tower, and two big wolves, chained, guarding the outiside. Skelly says he is sorry for the wolves, and would like to free them.

Bofar thanks Skelly for the information saying he has been a really big help and then gives a lad one gold piece.

After that Bofar goes to Retameron and tells him everything he had find out.

In the meantime Lucius and others have spoken to the people of the village, while Arteris and Desmond are still talking to the local lord to decide about the defense of Sisak.
Two villagers have gone missing the previous night, and when the others tried to reach Dentiata's tower, they spotted White Death orcs watching them and retreated. Wild rumors abund in the village about Dentiata being a werewolf or a vampire, but Retameron does not believe much of it. The villagers once went to Dentiata's tower in force. The wizard hostensibly let them in to show he had nothing to hide, but the activities of the White Deaths in the area have increased since his arrival. The villagers also says he came from the Black Eagle Barony.
"If we go peacefully to his tower, he may parley with us, but if he really has evil intention, this may not be the best course. Still, we have no proof what the villagers say it's true. We could try to talk, try to spy on him or fully attack him and search for evidences later. What do you think?", Retameron says.

"We really have no proof against him except for some rumors, so I doubt Arteris and Desmond will be willing to sanction a full attack on this wizard. We, however, have more elastic morals", Halia says with a smile.
"Yes we have, I say let's go capture and interrogate him", Sam says.
"We will have to put those wolves to sleep", Cardia says.
"I agree. Since I've known Skarda, the Iron Ring and their methods, my moral scruples have become much more lax, I must say", Kesh says.
"Willing to go, should we take Taran to or not? As an Elvenguard, he may have qualms about acting this way. The cleric, Alexei, however, would certainly come with us. And you, Lucius and Bofar?", Bellithiel asks.

I'm rather concerned by this course of action. We basically have nothing on this guy except that he's a wizard -- which is not per se a crime -- and some neighbours don't like him and think he comes from the Black Eagle Barony -- once more, that's not a crime; I suppose half of the population of Luln comes from there. White Death activity has increased, yet instead of pursuing them and extracting from them proof of any external influence on them, we are going to attack and capture a perfect stranger, against whom we've nothing? Look... you have reservations about informing Lady Arteris and Lord Desmond and Taran because they're on the side of the Duke's law, and you're willing to take that cleric, who's clearly biased against Thyatians -- which by the way includes me -- into your confidence? That's plain unreasonable. I'm all for being cautious and and checking out this wizard, but he has given us no reason for attacking him, which means we should at least attempt to verify the information we have before resorting to violence.

"Lucius has a point, but still contacting the wizard peacefully is going to expose our presence and plans. If he has an evil agenda, we will tell him we are here and willing to stop him", Retameron says.
"I could go meeting him with Sam only, posing as a travelling wizard, try to learn something from him, and eventually use some charm", Halia says
"Risky but could be the best way. Someone should still look after you. One group with me, we will try to capture and interrogate a orc or goblin. Another watching after Halia and Sam. This plan will be acceptable to the others too, I think" Retameron says.
"I should go with Retameron, my magic may be useful in an interrogation. With whom do you want to go?", Kesh asks Lucius and Bofar.

Watching after Halia and Sam would need somebody able to sneak around without anybody noticing. Dwarf in forest is not that, so I'm going after the orcs.

Lucius agrees with Bofar. Stealth is best left to others, warriors may be more useful fighting orcs.

Retameron decides to inform also Taran, Arteris and Desmond, who agree with the plan. Bellithiel and Taran go watching after Halia and Sam, while you, Retameron, Cardia and Kesh go outside the village to capture some orcs or goblins. Alexei and all the others stay in Sisak to defend the village.
It is dark when you go but Kesh, Bofar and Cardia can see quite well in the night, which is anyway partially lit by a pale small new moon. Retameron has some glasses on, and he lends a pair to Lucius too, explaining he will see better with them.
Indeed Lucius can now see much better, as if the night was lit by a big full moon.
Still Cardia and Kesh precede you, ready to use magic to stun or put to sleep any opponent. You go on very cautiously in the woods, but the White Death know the terrain and are not easily surprised, and in fact a group of 4 scouts, three orcs and a goblin, see you before you see them. One of them raises a horn, obviously with the intent of raising an alarm, but Cardia is quicker, putting the three orcs to sleep with a spell. The goblin runs away, but Kesh blocks him mid flight with another spell. You are about to go collecting them, when Retameron says to get down.
Six more orcs and goblins are visible not far to the south. They have not seen you yet, however.
"I have another spell", Cardia says.
"Maybe it is better to wait and see if they will go away", Retameron says.
But the orcs and goblins are headed straight to the spot where you just felled their companions.
"We need a diversion, Lucius, how about running to Sisak as fast as possible. They will pursue us, and in the meantime Cardia, Kesh and Bofar will take a couple more prisoners to add them to the ones we already have..", Retameron says.

Running in armor while pursued by enemies with poison arrows doesn't seem a good option. We have the advantage of surprise, and Cardia's spell.

Retameron nods to Lucius and then signals to Cardia. The elf wizard casts her spell, and three enemies goes down, two orcs and one goblin. Two goblins and an orc are still up, and Retameron springs to attack them, urging you to follow.
"Do not let them run away!", he says.
The goblins and the orc were about to run away, but seeing Retameron and you two coming at them, they take a defensive stance and prepare to meet you. Retameron attacks the orc, felling him with one blow.
The goblins are quicker, and take a hit toward Lucius and Bofar. The dwarf manages to parry, but Lucius is scratched a bit on the shoulder by the goblin's sword.

The goblin attacked by Lucius is in clear difficulties and soon he tries to run away.
Bofar and his goblin instead exchange blows without much result. Kesh too arrives to help, but the goblin parries again.

Lucius brings the goblin down. The one against Bofar resists, but Kesh finally succeed in stunning it. Retameron orders to take two prisoners and leave the others, then you return to Sisak. There Kesh and Cardia proceed with the interrogation of the prisoners, then speak to Nicola, Sara and Sharlaya who have done the same with the prisoners taken on the road.
It seems the White Deaths have been paid by humans in grey, bearing iron rings, to capture as much prisoners as possible and disrupt trade on the Western road. They also plan to destroy Sisak and take the whole population. About the nearby wizard, they only know their leaders have been trying to talk with him.
Later Halia, Sam, Taran and Bellithiel return from their meeting with the wizard, with two men, apprently the missing villagers, who are immediately welcomed by the locals.
"He has been friendly and talkative, I'd say. He has orc servants indeed, but say they are not White Death, but from a north western tribe. He says he does not trust these minions of the Iron Ring nor they serve the same patron, but he has not specified who his patron is. He say he was doing good progress with the White Deaths and is annoyed by the Iron Ring interference. So clearly he has his own agenda, but apparently not the same of the Iron Ring. He says he left the Black Eagle Barony because he could not stand anymore the oppression of the Baron there. He also says he may be willing to help Sisak, but he does not wish to do that openly, because for him it is more important to maintain good relations with the White Deaths. He says the two villagers came to spy on him, and he tried to explain the same to them", Halia says when you are reunited also with Arteris, Desmond and Alexei.
"Still debatable if he is a loyal subject of the Duke, as he did not say", Arteris says.
"Our duty is still to defend the town, we may not need the help of this dubious wizard. Could be enough to know he is not the leader of the White Deaths, if that's the truth", Desmond says.
"We should ask him to prove that, by telling us where to find the Iron Ring men. If they are behind the White Deaths, killing them could be enough to stop the attack before it takes place", Retameron says.

Regardless of his allegiance, if this wizard is opposed by the Iron Ring, then it would be useful for him to put us on their track. HE might not necessarily know where they are, but it's worth trying.
