How do we generate dice rolls? Just grab the dice and roll?
RobJN said good we're all adults (got him fooled  ) and good old fashion polyhedrons on the table are fine. Or you can use your favorite online dice roller. I've been using this Dice Roller so I can roll at work or anywhere really. Plus it keeps a nice log of my rolls should Rob or anyone like to verify.

If I did it right, the Baron's Favor is now Campaign ID 769 at the Unseen Servant site.

@ Angel, you just rolled 17, 19, 20 and 18 on 4 skills checks. The god of luck is on your side. You should buy a lottery ticket ! ;-)

Rob has said that he wants to take me to Vegas.

Using a new set of dice. So far, so good.

Yes, let's get all the good rolls out of the way before we get to combat

I'm off to Paris for a few days, so depending on Wifi and time, may not be able to post.

Shortly after I'm back I'm moving house, which will cause issues of it's own.

Perhaps Haldon could go to the Temple district to pray for guidance?

I am really loving that you guys have chosen to take the CSI: Threshold approach.

While I'd had vague ideas in the early portions of bolting on the "missing kids" plot element to the Castle Mistamere adventure, I opted instead to gloss that over in favor of getting to the Keep itself. Ah, what was I thinking? This is golden, RPG goodness. :D

I think a 5e redraft will have to include lists of clues, locations, and NPCs to question.

Before I post Horvik's next actions, I just want to confirm who, if anyone, is still at the bakery.

Horvik - Speaking with the baker's apprentice.
Haldon - Visited some dwarven merchants and went to the temple. Doubtful that trip was quicker than my conversation.
Erevean - Investigating some merchant stall, just not sure if he is nearby or some place else.
Auren - I am unclear on her position. Perhaps she did her rogue thing and is hiding in the shadows and I cannot see her.. :)

Also - 2 guards followed us, 1 left when we acknowledged we were aware of them. What is their status?

I think Aureen is currently in a alley mesmerized by a monster called «Pathfinder 2» and she forgot about us.

The bakery is slightly northwest-ish of the market square, north of the Temple district. It is likely Horvik will run into Haldon if he returns to the market square from the bakery.

Horvik has not seen the other guard return, but it's only been a few minutes. The remaining guard is trying to appear unobtrusive.

The stall Erevan and Auren are investigating is on the far side of the market square, along the northern edge towards the North Windrush Road.

"Got you!" he cried out triumphantly, as he quickly reached out to grab what appeared to be the outline of what might be a small, cloaked, hunched figure.

STR (Athletics): [1d20+5] = 1+5 = 6
Epic failed grapple!

Queue the Benny Hill theme as we chase this things around. LOL

Initiative rolls, if you please, my good players.
This begins the session's first delve into initiative and -- potentially -- combat.

Which brings me to the subject of structure and pacing. In my Alternity pbp, phase-by-phase/action-by-action has been something of a drag. (All right, it's been everything like a drag) I'd like to avoid that slog if possible.

Some of the options I've seen involve a few rounds of "show-and-tell" and once the outcome of the encounter seems in the bag, hand-waving the rest.

Another option I used with Alternity was to have the players give me intentions and attack modes, and let me run the dice on my side of the screen, and narrate the outcome. It worked, but I feel that it takes away from the players' direct agency.

D&D is a bit better in this regard, though, in that it has a pretty limited action economy as opposed to Alternity's "DO ALL OF THE THINGS, SOME OF WHICH CAN BE DONE AT ONCE" ;)

So, I'm open to suggestions about how you'd like to handle this, how it's been handled in other games you might've played in, or which method you liked, etc.

Some ideas from some other games that I found helpful.
  1. A separate Combat Tracker thread, that is used to summarize each round. Everyone seems to really like it, as it is easy to see who has not yet acted as well as a quick glance to review what all has transpired so far in the encounter, since encounters in PbP can stretch out over days. No need to scroll back through posts and try to figure piece things together.
  2. * Allow any players that beat the monster initiative to post their actions first (but in any order). The the DM posts the monster's actions. At this point, all players can just post their actions in any order. After all players post, then DM posts the narrative and finished with the monster's next action to set the stage for the next round of postings. This continues until the encounter ends.
For Example:
Lets say the following Initiatives are rolled.

Auren : 19
Horvik : 17
ENEMY : 15
Mah 9 : 12
Everan : 6

Auren & Horvik post their actions first, then the DM posts the monsters actions. After that, all players post their actions in any order, and the DM can then build the narrative, finishing with the monsters action. Repeat until encounter is over.

In tandem, there is a combat tracker here in OOC to summarize each round.

COMBAT TRACKER
Encounter #1 : Heroes vs ENEMY

Round 1
Auren : Hit w/ Dagger (5 dmg)
Horvik : Miss w/ Axe
ENEMY : Critical Hit on Horvik (12 dmg)
Mah 9 : Throws hand axe (4 dmg)
Everan : Casts Sleep

Round 2
Auren : Scolds Everan
Horvik : Sleeping
ENEMY : Sleeping
Mah 9 : Kicks Horvik to wake him
Everan : Laughs Maniacally

* Now that I've typed this all out I realize I am not sure this works if multiple enemies with different Initiatives, but I typed so I posted it...

Auren sneaks to the back of the stall, trying to be careful to not cast shadows.

Stealth: 15 + 3 = 18
This was an awesome move

mah, hope the moving house is either going well, or finished. I've moved three times in the past twenty-two years, and hated every time. :? Thankfully, the last time was hopefully our last. (Hooray, mortgage!)

... and, speaking of mortgages... off to work for me in a bit.

I'm using my extended mousepad to roll them on, otherwise they would take chunks out of my desk. Even with the mousepad they still have a resounding thunk.

Apologies for the delay of game. Real life and getting another potential player up to speed has eaten away at my usual "after-work" free time.

Working on an update now...
