Vancian magic in Ali Baba

Post by 2097 » Tue May 16, 2017 7:02 am

Ali Baba and Ala ad-Din are much newer than the main tales (1300:s, Sindbad 1600:s) but they're canon enough imo. Ali Baba's brother, Kessim, forgets a spell after saying it once. "Open Sesame". He tries every grain and bean but to no avail.
This spell is called Passwall in D&D. Check out the material components. :)

Here is what the 3e version of Passwall says:

A pinch of sesame seeds.
Nice find.

Do you think that is a coincidence or do you think that Passwall is based on Ali Baba and Ala ad-Din?

Are there any other D&D spells based on Arabian Nights stuff?

There's probably lots but I like this one especially, because he forgets the spell.

I think the Wish spell is also from this source material.
Flying carpets too.
