The Complete Sha'ir's Handbook - Opinions?

Post by Havard » Mon May 22, 2017 2:16 pm

Hello,
I am looking to expand my collection of Al-Qadim source books. I have gotten an offer for the Complete Sha'ir's Handbook for AD&D 2nd Edition.

What are your general opinions of this book?

Is the book useful if I decide to run an Al-Qadim campaign for a later edition (say 5th Edition)?

What other source material details Sha'irs?

I run a 5e aQ game. I do use this book, for information about secret organizations. However, that means I only use a fraction of the book. It's a tough call, if you're getting it individually.

At first I originally had a pirated aQ complete pdf collection (pretty bad quality, I have a couple of legal ones from DM's guild, much better) but last fall I got the complete aQ in paper on eBay, I got lucky and got a pretty good deal for them all as new. Looking forward to the line coming back in PoD. I feel pretty commited to aQ now.

City of Delights has a little bit but Arabian Adventures has the most info on 2e Sha'irs.

However, 2e sha'irs suck! Instead, for a 5e game, use a warlock with both a djinn patron and a gen familiar.

I have the book, but haven't read it in quite some time; I'll try and look it over again and get back to you.

In the meantime, the hilarious and insightful Brandes Stoddard wrote an overview of the 2E sha'ir here, including The Complete Sha'ir's Handbook (as a bonus, he also covered the 3.5 incarnation as well), that you might find helpful.

I like the book. It includes more information on Zakharan magic users, not only Shairs. Many additional character kits, although several of them are of limited use. Like all Al Qadim material, it is very rich in flavour, in spite of being a splatbook.

I like it. More options, some nice flavored kits.
