Running a Nentir Vale campaign using D&D 5e

Post by Tim Baker »

I came across this post on Tribality about running a Nentir Vale campaign using D&D 5e. It's a nice summary of the setting and what types of DMs might be interested in it. It also identifies a handful of 4e books that would be valuable for running the game using 5e. It doesn't really go into any details about what to do about features of the Nentir Vale setting that aren't available (yet) in 5e. There are lots of races, monsters, classes, magic items, and so on that don't have official 5e support. But I guess that was outside the scope of the article.

Did this article helpful to anyone who's considered running Nentir Vale adventures in 5e? Or for folks who aren't very familiar with Nentir Vale, by providing a short summary?

Do you mind sharing what portions of the article you found useful? Just curious, given your extensive knowledge.

I almost always fancied Nentir Vale, for being reminiscent of old campaigns: vague, mysterious and dangerous. The presentation of PoL and the sinister wilderness are somehow appealing to me, and its overall aesthetic brings to my mind the original setting of Dark Sun, that with the remnants of a forgotten past and the emphasis on the unknown. Heck, for a time I was considering running a 2e Nentir Vale, since it is well-suited for this edition.

To be on topic, now, I believe I stumbled on this article when I wanted to know more about Nentir Vale as a setting. Its list of adventures is quite helpful, to say the least.

I'm completionist, and usually got overwhelmed by the lot of info about the Vale and beyond. So the basic info that's presented there helps me to trim down to the basics.

I enjoy the same things that you pointed out about Nentir Vale. I'd never considered it as a good setting for 2e, but I can see that. While there were a ton of settings for 2e, the core rules seemed to emphasize heroism and this almost romantic notion of the PCs going out into the unknown to make the world better. Then again, maybe I'm allowing my bias for Nentir Vale influence my recollection of 2e. :)

Thank you for sharing that. It looks like it's from before Xanathar's Guide and other books that introduced new cleric domains. Now that we have a few more options available to clerics, would you make any changes to the list?

For example, I'm currently playing a multiclassed pact of the tome warlock with the Raven Queen as his patron / grave domain cleric (while a warlock, he helped bring about enough worship in the empire to restore her to the level of a deity, so now he gains levels in cleric). I thought grave domain was a good fit for the Raven Queen.

That is an excellent point. I'll have to look it over again.

I recall someone was working on a gazetteer for 5e they were going to release on DMs guild. What happened to that?

The Nentir Vale setting never was opened for DMs Guild. That happened, :P

The material is still on my PC.

That’s heartbreaking. Would have been essential buying for those of us who love the setting.
