How much do we know of Selduria?

Post by Big Mac » Sat Dec 30, 2017 1:14 am

I asked about the points of origin for various races in Nentir Vale and Zeromaru X suggested that humans might have been captured by Yuan-ti in the eastern continent of Selduria and brought over to Nerath as slaves.

But how much information do we have on Selduria?

Do we know how much of Selduria the Zannad Empire (the Yuan-ti empire) covers?

Do we know how far away Selduria is? Do we know if it is near the poles or the equator?

Do we know how the Yuan-ti got from Selduria to Nerath?

Do we know if the Zannad Empire still exists?

The articles about Karkoth (Dragon 399), the Iron Wolf Barbarians (Dragon 400), the Realm of the Gorgon King (Dragon 403), and Cernall (Dragon 406) talk about specific areas of Selduria, while the Monster Vault and to a little extend the Worlds & Monters preview book have a little info about Zannad. There is info about a cult of Zannadi yuan-ti in the temple of Sarpacala in the article about Mual-Tar (Dragon 370), and a former human tribe slave to the Zannadi yuan-ti in the article about humans who lived in the fringes of Nerath (Dragon 386).

So most of the northern, northeastern part of the continent is covered. However, beyond the lands of Karkoth proper, the Iron Wolf forest, and the monster realm, there are no specific details of the other regions. And there us virtually nothing about the regions south of Cernall (the Vailin alliance lands).

We only know it covered the lands of the Zannad jungle (you can locate the place easy in the official map). Perhaps it extended beyond the Zannad jungle proper, but nothing is said in canon materials. In my campaign, the Zannad empire extended south to northern Vailin, down to the Forbbiden City, so the lands of Cernall are full of Zannadi ruins.

Selduria is the continent were Karkoth and the Vailin Alliance are in the Conquest of Nerath game. So, the same conventions apply. The Realm of the Gorgon King is in the north, as it's in the same latitude than the Nentir Vale (that canonically is a northern land). From there, you can calculate the rest by the conventions used in your campaign, as nothing was said in canon about the equator regions (IHMO, the equator would be in the same latitude of the Iron Circle area).

Besides the fact that humanity was once slave to the Zannadi Yuan-ti (as per the info in Monsters Vault's entry on yuan-ti), there is no hint about when and how the Zannadi went to the Nerath continent, or if they went. Humanity could have spread in that continent after Zannad was destroyed, though.

Nope. Zannad was destroyed in ancient times, way before Arkhosia even existed. All that remains are the ruins and the legends of old.
