[Nerath] The kingdom of Kaddas

Post by Zeromaru X » Sat Apr 20, 2019 7:34 pm

Recently, I've learned that some of the cities mentioned in Psionic Power as being part of former Nerath were originally featured in Cityscape, a 3.5 sourcebook. Among the ones I've found are Four Winds and Kaddastrei, both belonging to a kingdom named Kaddas. So, it seems Kaddas was one of the kingdoms that were part of Nerath (so far, I've identified four).

Is there any information regarding this kingdom? Do I need to get Cityscape for any significant info?

Great find! I love how you find these interconnecting tendrils throughout the products. :)

I own Cityscape, and there isn't much information on Kaddas. Here's what I was able to draw from the book:
  • The kingdom still exists in the timeline of Cityscape. It is currently ruled by King Rumeius IV. The monarchy of Kaddas is passed on to the oldest child. Custom demands that the rule be versed in the arts of wizardry.
  • The city of Blackwall is ruled by a a duke with blood ties to the king of Kaddas, but his role is largely ceremonial.
  • Military service is required for those who come of age in Blackwall. They take their duties seriously, and are ready to defend Kaddas against any invader.
  • Kaddastrei is the capital city of Kaddas. The power center is both conventional and magical.
Here are some interesting data points that expand beyond Kaddas:
  • Four Winds stands at the crossroads of two major highways that enable trade and travel between four great kingdoms. So there are at least three other kingdoms in the region, beyond Kaddas.
  • House Ebonmar is the largest noble house in the kingdom, and has more governmental positions than any other house. This section never explicitly ties the house to Kaddas as the kingdom being referred to. The house represents the family tree of Duke Balthus Ebonmar. Considering the political power of the house, Duke Balthus Ebonmar is unlikely to be the duke who rules Blackwall, as the Duke of Blackwall is described as being a largely ceremonial role.
  • There is a Church of Pelor and a Church of Erythnul in both Blackwall and in Four Winds.
  • Other churches that are mentioned, but aren't tied to particular cities: Church of Kord, Church of St. Cuthbert, Church of Wee Jas.
  • Cults that are mentioned, but aren't tied to particular cities: Cult of Asmodeus, Cult of Tharizdun.
  • Sigil, City of Doors, is mentioned.

Interesting. Thank you very much for this info. According to Psionic Power, Four Winds is about three days to the south of the Nentir Vale. That means, if we go by the info in Cityscape, the other kingdoms maybe are the dwarven kingdom of Shatterstone to the north (defunct by the current year), near Nentir Vale; the dwarven kingdom of Mithralfast, in the Dawnforges; and Nera, to the south.

Which means Kaddas is located between the Dragondown Coast and Harken Forest. I guess I should revisit my map of the Nerathan League's area...

Sounds like a reasonable guess to me.

The Cityscape Map Gallery has six pictures in it, including maps of both Four Winds and Kaddastrei. Presumably, there is a key in the actual book, to go with each map.

There is also a Cityscape Art Gallery. Presumably some of these pictures might be of people or places in Kaddas. :)
