Against the Giants (Dungeon adventure path)

Post by Big Mac » Sat May 19, 2012 6:10 pm

Dungeon Magazine recently published a 4e version of Against the Giants, which translated the adventures to the Nentir Vale/PoL setting, and added a forth adventure. I'd love to talk about these, but first some useful links, so that everyone knows what we are talking about:
  • Steading of the Hill Giant Chief (Dungeon #197 - DDI) - The original Steading of the Hill Giant Chief adventure was written by Gary Gygax and published in 1978 by TSR, Inc. Part one of a three-part series, it packed a lot of punch into eight pages and presented hill giants as iconic D&D® monsters. The tripartite “Giants” series was later collected into a single adventure module titled Against the Giants, published by TSR in 1981.

"This adventure is inspired by Gary Gygax’s classic module but uses the latest Dungeons & Dragons® Steading of the Hill Giant Chief Roleplaying Game rules. It is designed for characters of levels 12–14.
  • Warrens of the Stone Giant Thane (Dungeon #198 - DDI) - This adventure draws its inspiration from the tri-partite “G” series of modules written by Gary Gygax in the 1970s—a series that was later collected into a single adventure module titled Against the Giants, published in 1981 by TSR, Inc. The series pitted characters against hill giants, frost giants, and fire giants, but stone giants got the short end of the stick. This adventure gives stone giants their moment to shine.
  • Glacial Rift of the Frost Giant Jarl (Dungeon #199 - DDI) - The Glacial Rift of the Frost Giant Jarl was written by Gary Gygax and published in 1978 by TSR, Inc. Part two of a three-part series, it packed a lot of punch into eight pages and presented frost giants as iconic D&D monsters. The tripartite "Giants" series was later collected into a single adventure module titled Against the Giants, published by TSR in 1981.

This adventure is inspired by Gary Gygax's classic module but uses the latest Dungeons & Dragons Roleplaying Game rules. It is designed for characters of levels 16–18.

"Glacial Rift of the Frost Giant Jarl" can be run as a stand-alone adventure, or you can play it as the third part of a four-part series that begins with "Steading of the Hill Giant Chief" (Dungeon 197) and "Warrens of the Stone Giant Thane" (Dungeon 198), and concludes with "Hall of the Fire Giant King" (Dungeon 200).
  • Hall of the Fire Giant King (Dungeon #200 - DDI) - The original Hall of the Fire Giant King adventure was written by Gary Gygax and published in 1978 by TSR, Inc. The conclusion of a three-part series, it packed a lot of punch into sixteen pages and presented fire giants as iconic D&D monsters. The tripartite “Giants” series was later collected into a single adventure module titled Against the Giants and published by TSR in 1981.

This adventure is inspired by Gary Gygax’s classic module but takes advantage of the latest Dungeons & Dragons rules. “Hall of the Fire Giant King” can be run as a stand-alone adventure, or you can play it as the conclusion of a four-part series that includes “Steading of the Hill Giant Chief ” (Dungeon 197), “Warrens of the Stone Giant Thane” (Dungeon 198), and “Glacial Rift of the Frost Giant Jarl” (Dungeon 199).

They are all DDI, so you can't download them unless you are a subscriber (although the walpaper is free).

I've already heard (from a Greyhawk fan) that the added type of giant isn't totally appropriate for Greyhawk, but this is Nentir Vale and things can be different here.

I'd love to hear from anyone who has run the adventures in Nentir Vale. How well do you think they fit into the setting? Are there other ideas that can be raided from Greyhawk to augment what is in the four adventures?
