What AD&D 2nd Ed Kits would you like to see back in 5E?

Postby Havard » Fri Jul 14, 2017 7:00 pm

I think the Bladesinger would be pretty easy to model after the Eldritch Knight.

What Kits from AD&D 2nd Edition would you like to see come back as 5E Class Archetypes, Backgrounds or something else?

Which ones do you think are already well represented within the rules?

Its in the SCAG, p.141.

I've lost a lot of connections with 2e over the years, kits being one of those elements that I no longer pay much attention to.

I'd have to dig out my 2e splats to examine the kits again and compare them to the classes & sub-classes that exist in currently available 5e rulebooks to give an in-depth answer, but I really have to get to drawing up the next dungeon for my weekly.

So far, I think the wizards need the most in the way of adjusting, because all of the wizards in the PHB are specialists, and there needs to be an official "Generalist" wizard. There is a non-canonical Generalist School of wizardry created by Tom Miskey somewhere on the net, and I found a PDF on his google drive:
https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B-n7dDd5NJqBYlVYbWhPYmMwNFE/edit. I like that one, but I gave a wide berth to most other items in here. Of note is the Barbarian Path of the Spellbreaker - just like 1e UA's magic-hating/fearing barbarians! :)

His backgrounds are useful, but some of them are very close to the ones that (later) appeared in SCAG. I also avoid the new feats and most sub-races. One of my players attempted to play a ghostwise halfling, but quickly gave it up as it really didn't fit into my campaign world. :ugeek:

Unearthed Arcana had the Lore Master, which is great for generalization, but was incredibly overpowered. I've been field-testing the subclass in a friend's game and, even with my attempts to be responsible in how I use it, I can feel just how powerful it is compared to everyone else. I'm hoping they choose to revise it for Xanathar's.

I downloaded that pdf earlier today or last night. I haven't had a chance to read it yet. I was mainly interested in the Hexblade and Raven Queen aspects. Just reading the blurbs gave me an idea for a campaign wherein my PC Hellgirl wants to rid herself of Asmodeus because she really reveres Wee Jas. Using her as an NPC, she hires her own party (the other players I played alongside with last year) to assist her on a quest to change her alignment and (a bunch of other questy type stuff) to eventually become a Warlock of the Raven Queen.

I haven't had time to write any of this down yet. :?

I'd like to see a solid, balanced Sha'ir sub-class for the wizard (or perhaps it's so different, it needs to be its own base class).

Probably the ones from CGR1!

I'm not quite sure what Kits exist off of the top of my head. Do we have a topic in the 2e forum, with a full list of Kits and their sourcebooks?

I don't think so. That would be a pretty huge undertaking, but I think I have seen a document like that floating about somewhere?

Maybe worth asking in the 2nd Ed. forum?

Inheritors. Of course, that would mean you'd need to introduce rules for cinnabryl and cinnabar, too.... Not that this is a bad thing. (A small/medium/large up-scaling of the "Magic Initiate" feat would probably do it.)

Yes. I have made one of my own, but I haven't proofed it, let alone tested it in play.

Forest Runners from Ranger's Handbook; rangers with roguish and bardic abilities, outlaws and rebels against the oppressive and corrupt nobility, that would make a nice twist for the class.
