New DMG Screen

Post by shesheyan »

I bought it last Friday.

Like the art on the cover. Reminiscent of the original screen.
Was surprised to see a party of 4 female characters and 1 male. Not a big deal.

The inside is in full glossy color also.
Having the conditions at hand is very useful.
The Quick NPC creation tables are a good idea. The name generator is a bonus but I wouldn't want every NPC to have 3 syllable names. Might just use 2 or even 1 syllable.

Cover, obscured areas, light, skill, travel pace, damage by level are good tables.

But what is Encounter distance?

Something Happens and Quick Finds tables are no useful to me.
I would have preferred a quick list of costs for common items.

Interesting. Thanks for the comments on it. I'll have to take a peek at it the next time I'm at the store.

I have heard some of the same comments.

i will probably get it but they were saying some tables space could have been better used with alternate information for a DM

They put some illustration on the DM's side. While I find this beautiful (and inspiring) its not the most efficient design. The space could have been used to put more tables / infos. Adding the useless tables (imho) and the drawings, about 2/3 of one panel is under used. There are 4 panels. One can always print parts of the rules PDF and customize the less useful areas.
Still, I like the product its a 7.5 on 10.

I have it, too, and I quite like it. I was mostly interested in having the conditions at hand, the rest is eye candy for me, really (and I love the fact that it's landscape.) I got it at 20% discount, so I am quite happy.

Agreed. I will go with your rating as well
I bought one yesterday.
would have been nice to remove npc stuff and include a list of all damage types, and maybe the tables that have the CR and hp stats in the DMG that would have been very useful to adjust a monster on the fly. I can't remember the exact table number but hopefully you know what I mean.

I am glad I have it, but it could have been done a little better.

It's at my FLGS, but I'm waiting for it to show up at another store, seeing as my friend gave me a $10 gift card for that place. (From what I can gather, the distributor they are using is run by a bunch of idiots, based on how often I've seen them post on their FB page about delayed shipments.)

Mine arrived today, looks good. Though I wish they'd go back to the TSR days and include a mini-dungeon crawl or something in it (a couple "lairs", etc.)

Nice :)

On a more serious note, I think the screen looks real nice but it seems like most DMs are going to be alittle disappointed in how little content is provided on the screen itself.
And I miss the days of getting a mini adventure with the screen too!

Used it yesterday for the first time; the information provided was useful, I rolled some NPC characteristics "on the fly" (the PCs have a big retinue of soldiers; I am running Birthright.) The conditions are easily the most useful part.

Used it Friday evening... and the conditions were also the most useful part for that session. The players hadn't seen it yet. They really liked the artwork on their side of the screen.

Finally broke down and went to my FLGS to pick it up - looks like the other place isn't even bothering to order it, although they have both of the other screens. For the most part I like it. Yes, I too wish it came with a mini-adventure. The artwork is wonderful (I chuckled at the two monsters fighting among the dice) but also feel that the space could have been used better.

overall, I'd give it a 7.5/8 out of 10.

Yes I noticed that when our DM brought it over the past week. As a player, I like the panoramic view of the exterior - DM likes the stiffness, the landscape orientation, but not so thrilled about the information side. That isn't an issue as he says he can just clip whatever notes he wants over top.

I prefer Fitz' screen which is a very crunchy screen, well-organised and dense with information. The official screen wastes a lot of space on trivia.

It's also a free download. Thanks Fitz!

That's a great resourse, but I do like GM screens with some art on them. I did download it and it looks good. I'll be using it in addition to my WotC 5E GM screen.
