Can a player use his inspiration to gain advantage in a Death Saving Throw?

PHB page 125 wrote:Using Inspiration
If you have inspiration, you can expend it when you make an attack roll, saving throw, or ability check.
Since it is called a saving throw (albeit a "special" one in that it isn't tied to any ability score) I'd say absolutely.

Like-wise, rolling initiative is a "special" dexterity skill check, and therefore I'd allow inspiration to be used for it as well. If a player really wanted to for some reason.

Yes why not, the wording is "saving throw" so it doesn't distinguish ability saves or death saves.

I haven't looked at the ability but I'd disagree. Since you are unconscious, you would be able to use inspiration and I don't think anyone could inspire you.

While this could be a legitimate ruling from the DM, inspiration is more of a story mechanism rather than a bonus derived from an in-game source. I.e. you aren't necessarily being inspired by something in the game itself (like by a bard's song, etc.). In fact, a player can 'give' their PC's inspiration point to another.

Think of it as a story reward rather than an in-game bonus.
