Finally, all five abashai back in the game. For whatever reason they dropped two types in 2e; in 1e there were five and they correlated to the five colors of the chromatic dragons.

I must have hidden the question in a microdot.

I don't know if you are aware that most of the chapters of Mordenkainen's Tome of Foes are themed around specific conflicts in the multiverse. Do you have an idea where the Nightwalker might fit into a big D&D conflict?

So this is an area where 5e is looking back to restore things from 1e. Interesting.

Do you know what 3e, 3.5 and 4e did with the abashai?

Why is it abashai? Last time I checked, the fiends were called Abishai.

Hard to say. I wish it were Mystara related, but Nightwalkers were in 3E (and the SRD), so I would be surprised if they looked much at the original version for this.

If it were up to me I would tie them to the Far Realm or even better a Nightmare Dimension invasion of Mystara.

I'm very interested in the Eladrin, and the two elfy-looking females (possible fey? the last one looks like a Shadar-Kai, maybe). It's also interesting that two of these 10 monsters (or 14, if you count the Abishai separately) are "crying"; one of the fairy ladies has actual tears, and the undead thing with the spikes has black goo oozing from his eyes, which may or may not be meaningfully suggestive of grief. But by far the most exciting inclusion for me is the Marut. At last, both Modrons and Inevitables will be available in an edition I'm familiar with! I think I sense a Great March in the name of Primus coming on....

It's clearly some sort of preliminary document; they probably just got the spelling wrong. It'll likely be fixed in copyediting (maybe, if we're lucky, but if that doesn't happen, it still doesn't prove there was an intention to change).

A creature list was released on twitter, by challenge rating. There's also encounter tables, and creature list by environment.

Nice!

From a Mystara fan perspective I will be excited to see the following:

Tortle (AC2, X6)
Tortle Druid
Choker (Introduced in the Rockhome Gazeteer)
Frost Salamander (BECMI/Mystara Monstrous Appenxix)
Nagpa (AC2, X4)
Leviathan (Based on the AC2 creature?)
Yeenoghu
Orcus
Demogorgon

In BECMI, nightshades (including nightwalkers) are the greatest mortal minions of the Sphere of Entropy, ranking higher than lesser undead and answering to Orcus. The Sphere of Entropy opposes the other Spheres and represents dissolution, darkness, undeath, and death. In 3e and Pathfinder, nightshades are the undead remnants of powerful fiends who were destroyed by the Negative Energy Plane. They can be found on the Negative Energy Plane and the Plane of Shadow and represent entropy and undeath.

I saw the D&D Beyond video quoted/linked in that article earlier today. And I saw the physical book in my FLGS last night.

However, my birthday is next month, so I'm not allowed to buy stuff like this for myself until after then.

I thought the Oblex was an updated version of the 1e Obliviax (Memory Moss). Anyhoo, I really like the Oblex and that they divied it into 3 different stages of growth.

The Nightwalker reminded me of the first season of Torchwood finale. I won't spoiler that for anyone who hasn't seen it, however...

In 5e, the Nightwalker originates in the Negative Plane, accessible when passing between the Prime Material & the Shadowfell, the Negative Plane is the substance that separates the planes, like a wall separates rooms in a house.

I like the Shadar-Kai, even though (to me) it is a relatively new incarnation of elf.

Also of note:
Eladrin
Drow
Duergar
Abishai
Demons
Devils
-Loths (Daemons in 1e)
Githyanki/Githzerai

The info on the Blood Wars is also new to me, however, I knew of its existence from its 2e origins. My players have done a LOT of downtime research into the Lower Planes, and the Blood Wars info will help fill that gap in my personal knowledge of what transpired in-game 20-30 years ago.

I am overall very happy with Mordenkainen's Tome of Foes, with perhaps one possible exception; I really like having different NPC types in the few latest official & unofficial releases, and with the exception of the Drow, Eladrin, Shadar-Kai, & Duergar, MToF had no new NPC types.

(By NPC types, I mean the NPCs found in the back of the MM, & Volo's that could represent any PC race in an archetypal character entry: the Bandit, Thug, Assassin, Archmage, City Guard, Master Thief, Cult Leader, etc.)

One a side note: One of the FLGS DM's for Wed. Night D&D let me look through an adventure that the FLGS printed out for him to use for their D&D night, and it featured pre-gens for a one-shot. Some of the pre-gens were Githyanki AND Githzerai! (mind blown!) I'm sure there had to be some kind of in-game mechanic that allows both of these races to exist in the same party (let alone the same room) without killing each other.

Either that, or they've softened the millennia long feud, akin to allowing a Klingon to become part of a Federation Starship crew in ST:TNG.

You're referring to "Rrakkma", a promo adventure where you get to play both githyanki and githzerai characters that have formed some sort of coalition, also mentioned in Tome of Foes as "The Sha'sal Khou", which I'm not quite fond of. I'd be very interested to have a look of that adventure, but my FLGS informed that they didn't get any copy of it.

The FLGS has to be an official WotC outlet to get some of those DCI promos.

And, just as I said, a rrakkma is a Gith coalition which exists for the purpose of hunting illithids.

It seems the elemental soldiers are 4e's archons. Dunno if they have the same concept, though.
