[Sage Advice] No Scythe in D&D5 yet?

@JeremyECrawford @mikemearls I would like to create a Class that has a proficiency in an item thats not "Official" yet. Before I do, it made me wonder why it has not been created. Why is there no Scythe in DnD yet? I want to make another book just based on a bunch of weapons:P

Mike Mearls @mikemearls

Scythe is kind of niche as a weapon, plus not much record of it used in combat iirc

I never noticed, but I assumed that was the default weapon for evil Clerics? :)

What editions do feature the Scythe?

What other standard D&D weapons have not yet made an appearance in 5E?

Clerics (regardless of alignment) couldn't even use edged weapons until 2nd Ed. And scythes are pretty much only suitable for gods of death or harvest--but since Death is the only "evil" domain in the 5e core rules, you would think they would have included it.

Scythes are even less suitable for use as weapons as all the repurposed farm implements they made Exotic and gave to Monks.

The weapons table in PHB lists the most common weapons used in the world of D&D. Since the scythe isn't considered a common weapon wielded in battles, it didn't get any stats. That being said, you can always reflavour a weapon to suit your needs, as is the case with monks: a nunchaku resembles a club, while a kama looks like a sickle. Moreover, DMG presents a list of weapons in Chinese or Japanese, for Wuxia settings. It would only be appropriate to reflavour the scythe; I'd pick the stats for greatclub, since it needs two hands to attack and deals 1d8 damage (twice the damage a sickle does).

This thread over at SJG is probably relevant.

In 3E the Scythe has a x4 damage multiplier on critical hits, so it's a great weapon to use if you can increase your chances of successfully critting. Weirdly, there are several paladin-centric items that can give you an automatic confirmation of any critical hit, so one of the best uses for a scythe is to make an angelic "harvester" who reaps evil souls.

I had to dig through the D&D Next material to get scythe stats for Ana, the cleric of the Silver Flame, from Thorn's Chronicle.
