D&D Essentials Kit boxed set will contain a code for D&D Beyond

Post by Tim Baker » Tue May 21, 2019 4:55 am

I was surprised to learn that the upcoming D&D Essentials Kit boxed set will contain a code that unlocks the adventure for D&D Beyond (DDB). It also provides a 50% off discount for the PHB on DDB. Since DDB is a licensee of D&D, I wasn't expecting a deal like this, but I'm not complaining. Scroll to the bottom of this Reddit post for more info.

There will also be a series of QR codes in the box pointing to WotC-written digital adventures on D&D Beyond that will supplement the adventure.

I still just wish they would release material on PDF. I just want light portable books. I’m not going to use any of the other features. I don’t want to pay an ongoing subscription fee.

I'm curious about the 1-on-1 variant.

It's already available as an Unearthed Arcana download on the Wizards website, if you'd like to check it out.

Correct. According to ComicBook.com, IGN, and Raging Owlbear, the 1-on-1 rules are an edited version of the UA Sidekick rules.

Sounds like they are trying to do something similar to Bits & Mortar (but not exactly the same).

Correct. According to ComicBook.com, IGN, and Raging Owlbear, the 1-on-1 rules are an edited version of the UA Sidekick rules.
«The new rules will let a group of two players sit down and play D&D with one taking on the role of a Dungeon Master and the other taking control of an adventurer utilizing a set of "Sidekicks" rules.»

Interesting. One player (with a sidekick) and one DM is exactly what I'm looking for. Official 1-player rules. ;)

I just found out about the Essentials Kit last week, and it might be on my list of things to get. I just picked up the Starfinder Beginner's Box a couple weeks ago, and I LOVE LOVE LURVE it!

Your double post just echoes my sentiments. ;)

I'm not very well connected to the internet, and I prefer to have things at my table that I can read easily. PAYING for an online subscription that can only be used while online is too restrictive for me.

Computer screens are very hard on my eyes (I am getting old ;( ), but books, or anything printed on paper are still readable and my preferred choice for gaming supplements.

Unfortunately, some of my players are now paying for DDB and using material that I (as DM) am unfamiliar with, so there are some things slipping into my campaign world that are not approved.
A big THANKS! to Giant Space Hamster & Chimpman for the cookies! (Dark Side be damned!) :D

Easy fix. Give them to the next session to remove the unapproved material. No DDB use at the table. Anyone caught using the material after is permanently banned.

My players are generally agreeable towards the campaign setting and house rules, so perma-banning won't be necessary.

Also, one player said (paraphrased) "Most of the [character creations stuff] on DDB is in the rulebooks, they just offer some canonical additions that aren't in the PHB [or other printed rulebooks], and its not like I pulled something like a SHINOBI off of D&D Wiki!"

There is canonical player options on DDB that are not in the printed books? I find that disturbing.

Don't take my word for that. I cannot even get on the site to confirm what I've said, I myself can only attest to the characters that my players bring to the table from DDB - and those character options differed from the PHB, Volo's Guide, SCAG, or Xanathar's Guide.

I tried to reset my password (to DDB) and I get an email warning me that an outside entity is attempting to reset my gmail password! WTF? How is resetting my DDB password an attempt to reset my gmail account password?

I am very frustrated and actively discourage all of my players to use any online content that I myself cannot access.

As already said I’d go a step further than ‘discourage’ and impose a flat out ban.
