Medieval Urbanism articles on Kobold Press

Post by Big Mac » Thu Aug 03, 2017 8:48 am

Kobold Press have put up some pretty interesting articles, called Medieval Urbanism. There are three of them so far: They are all by Konstantinos Dimopoulos. I don't know of any of Konstantinos's other work yet, but these articles look like a great way to use real-world cities to figure out how a fantasy city should work.

I hope that Kobold Press publish more of these later.

Excellent!

These articles remind me of the kind of stuff Dragon magazine would run back in the 1st Edition days. I miss this kind of content.

Kobold Press used to put out a magazine, so they were geared up to publish similar stuff to Dragon?

A Patreon-funded periodical from Kobold Press is in the works, with the first issue expected in September. It will be PDF only, initially, but if there's sufficient funding, physical versions will be printed. I'm curious to see what kind of content they offer.

I hope some of it is edition/system neutral content.

It's my understanding that it's going to be for 5th Edition D&D, but it'll be interesting to see if some of the articles are system neutral.

Disappointing although not surprising.

More information was recently provided about Warlock. Rather than continuing to discuss the supplements here, I started a new thread.

Nice- I'll have to look at them more closely later, but these definitely are on my "read" list.

On the topic, I would highly recommend "Life in a Medieval City" by Francis and Joseph Gies. Their prose descriptions really create a very visceral image in the mind, and they have a lot of colorful and interesting tidbits about daily life that help to flesh out that world. I have not yet read their other books (Life in a Medieval Village and Lie in a Medieval Castle), though I do have the former and am eager to get to it. The books have a lot of scholastic information in them, but are not presented in a stodgy, academic style at all.
