Iconic D&D Monsters knock offs of Chinese toys?

Post by shesheyan » Thu Feb 15, 2018 7:34 pm

Seems like a bunch of cheap plastic toys from China are the basis for some D&D monsters. These ressemblance is shocking ! Very fun read. I didn't know that.

Well, the toys are from Hong Kong, not Japan, bit other than that it is indeed a nice and fun bit of history.

Thanks for sharing it,

I've heard about this before, and even own one of the bulettes, which I found in a set of cheap dinosaur toys many years back (though well after I started playing D&D in the '80s). I've also seen the "Realistic Dinosaurs" set that DiTerlizzi shows at the end of that blog for sale at my local Rite Aid, too.

I remember having them as a kid, before I even knew D&D existed. Unfortunately they were thrown away or lost at some point after my infancy. I read Tony Ditelizzi's post some time ago and I remembered them clearly, but had not previously made the connection between the rust monster plastic toy I had as a kid and the very similar Ral Partha lead mini I had (and still have) as a teen :) Indeed they are very similar. Apparently those Hong Kong plastic toys were common in the '70 and '80 all over the world :)

Indeed. I used to own some of these toys back when I was a kid. I think I recall the Rust Monster and the Bulette for sure. I remember being unhappy because they weren't real dinosaurs which is what I was into back then. I wonder if I still have them somewhere.
