Which D&D wargames have you played?

Post by shesheyan » Sat Sep 01, 2018 11:57 am

Which Wargames have you played? For clarity a wargame can take various forms - with miniatures, cardboard counters, cardboard 2D cut outs, dice, on grid or no grid. But its always in A vs B mode. For this reason D&D collaborative boardgames are not included.

The poll is limited to 10 options. If a game is not in the list please feel free to mention it below.

I own most of these, but from the list I think I have only played AD&D Battle system.

A few that I have played that didn't make it to the list:
  • War Machine (from the D&D Companion Set/BECMI/RC)
  • OrcWars (included in Gaz10 and earlier in an issue of Dragon)
  • Sea Machine (included in Gaz2)

I'm always amazed at the quantity of games TSR published. I'll have the crack open Gaz 2 and 10. I don't remember those.

Err a few points of correction/clarification:

The issue of Dragon that introduced OrcWars was #132
Sea Machine (the naval extention of War Machine) is in M1: Into the Maelstrom
Gaz 4 Ierendi has a naval combat system but I don't recall it being named, it is also much simpler than Sea Machine.

I think there are two version of BattleSystem and I am told they are different in scope.

By D20 Miniatures (random boosters) do you mean the Minature battle rules from the 3.5 book Miniatures Handbook, stats for which were included with all the 3rd Ed plastic random miniatures boxes? (There were also a few map sets produced specifically for it.)

Personally I think the only ones I have played are War Machine and OrcWars.

Personally I don't like Sea Machine - each ship in a fleet has to be a separate unit for Sea Machine purposes - which loses the scalability of War Machine where the unit size could be whatever was most convenient.

Birthright also has a war cards mini-game and a corresponding ship combat system using cards.

Personally, I've only tested them a bit, but I've used the Companion/Master rules (War Machine) more.

The second edition of Battle System included a skirmish mode but it was part of the same book.

Yup - I think that that's the one from Miniatures Handbook.

And thanks for the clarification on BattleSystem - I think I once had someone tell me that the one was each token = 1 creature and the other was each token = a group of creatures. Sounds like the first is the skirmish variant.

Do you have a link to the Miniature Handbook? I don't recall that book.

The only one I've played is the D20 miniature game, in both its 3.5 and 4e incarnations. I still own a lot of these minis, mostly from the 4e phase of the game.

I'm glad you mentioned this one. It's been years but I have fond memories of War Machine. I preferred it to Battle System.
I also played quite a lot of the D&D Minis game during the 3rd Ed era

I remember the cover now. I didn't buy it. We only played with the booklet and the model cards. Competition was fierce at the time with Wizkids Clix system. I decided to play Mech Warrior Dark Age and Mage Knight clix instead of D&D minis since I already played D&D as a rpg.

Here's a thread about D&D Based Mass Combat Systems. There is also this thread about D&D Based Board Games which might be useful.

Apart from BECMI war machine wars, which we played a lot in high school, we occasionally played the Dragonlance war and the Orcwar chips games. Mostly, however, we played Britannia.

Orcwars! Lots of fun!
Played War Machine, but not a stand alone game, but rather as part of adventures and campaigns (to sort out big scale battles).

There was First edition Battlesystem, and Second edition Battlesystem. 2e had 2 separate books of Battlesystem games - mass combat and Skirmishes. I have all of these.

There is also Swords & Spells (1976) - the 0e precursor to Battlesystem.

I remember Orc Wars fondly, popping it out of the center of Dragon magazine.

I've played Dice Masters, and it is not a wargame. It is an abstract collectible card game more in common with Magic: the Gathering than a true war-game.

I also have a small collection of Mage Knight heroclix, but have never played or ever read the actual Mage Knight rules. We regularly mix the MK clix in with our other clix forces for added variance in those matches.

There was a d20 supplement named "Seas of Blood" by Mongoose that had naval warfare, but it sits next to the Birthright naval warfare set unplayed. :/

I have rarely ever done any wargaming, so am not familiar with many of these.

I used to own Chainmail (3rd ed. of the original, IIRC?), the 1e Battlesystem set, and 2e Skirmishes rules, but only actually played one of them (Battlesystem 1e) a couple times.

At one point, I was either given the Greyhawk Wars boardgame or found it on clearance. It was essentially a simplified wargame using a Risk-like version of the Greyhawk world map. I tried playing it once or twice, but then just used the chits as counters for my tabletop RPGs.

I have not actually played the Dragonlance game, but I have looked it over and it looks like it would be pretty decent to play.

I have played Dragon Dice, but I wouldn't have called it an actual D&D game. Where are the D&D stats for Coral Elves, or Firewalkers? There are dragons in Dragon Dice, but no dungeons.

I'd forgotten about Greyhawk Wars in my post last night! This is a war-game that absolutely should be in this list.

Back in the 90's, we played through about half of the campaigns in the book before Real Life made continuing impossible.

The second edition of Battle System included a skirmish mode but it was part of the same book.
As Dread Delgath mentioned above, Battlesystem for 2nd edition had two separate books (I own both of them). And the rules for each book are a bit different.

Here is what each book had to say:
Battlesystem: Miniature Rules wrote:The ground scale is 1 inch = 10 yards. Figures are at a 10:1 ratio, so that each figure in a unit represents 10 individual combatants of that figure type. The game is designed for use with 25mm figures.
Battlesystem: Skirmishes wrote:It is not a game of army against army. It is designed for use with a small to medium number of miniatures (10 to 50) where each miniature figure represents a single man or creature on the gaming table.
But here is how they differ in actual play, using initiative as the example:
Battlesystem: Miniatures Rules wrote:Each player rolls a d10 to determine which side has the initiative. A player subtracts 2 from his die roll for each of his units that will attempt to charge when it moves (in Step 3 or 4). The player with the lower modified roll wins initiative for the turn. If the results are identical, roll again.
Battlesystem: Skirmishes wrote:Each player rolls a 20-sided die. Initiative is determined individually for each player, regardless of how many players are on a side or team. The player with the lowest die roll has won initiative; ties are re-rolled. Keep track of the initiative rolls. They will be needed again in the combat phase
