Which RPGs did you buy in 2018 ?

Post by shesheyan » Sat Sep 29, 2018 12:11 pm

Still three months to go in the year but I don't plan to buy other rpgs this year. I didn't participate in a single Kickstarters in 2018. I resisted backing Numenera 2.0 but it took all my willpower.

Coriolis is the game I spent the most money on. Its a beautiful and fun game with an original setting. No regrets there since we played 8 sessions of 4-5 hours. Its a simple and fun system so I feel like a can easily do other campaigns in the future. If you want to do «Chtuluh in Space+Firefly+Arabian Nights» this is your game.

Nostalgia buys on the other hand is something I will be more weary of in 2019. I'm not saying I regret buying these books, they were interesting reads but I don't see myself playing these games.

Solo gaming is still a very attractive option - more so now that my group is out of commission for a while.

Modern AGE is my next campaign projection in the works. I hope I can start my campaign early 2019. Esper Genesis could be played down the road, as a one-shot at least, since its based off 5e. Infinity 2d20 won't see any action I'm afraid.

Nostalgia buys :
- Blue Holmes pdf
- Calidar books
- Sharp Swords & Sinister Spells pdf

D&D :
- DA1, DA2 and Blackmoor Campaign pdf (3e)
- D&D Mordenkainen Tome of Foes

Solo :
- Elminster's Guide to Solo Adventuring pdf
- The Solo Adventurer's Tool Box pdf

Sci-Fi :
- Esper Genesis pdf
- Modern AGE pdf
- Infinity 2d20 Players Guide
- Coriolis: 3x Scenario-Locations, Atlas Compendium, PDF of the core book, GM Screen

D20/OGL
  • Everstone: Blood Legacy [Campaign Setting] (Iron Golem Games)
Pathfinder
  • Core Rulebook
  • Demons Revisited
  • Dragon Empires Gazetteer
  • GameMastery Guide
  • Planar Adventures
  • The Worldwound
Pathfinder 3PP
  • Chronica: Age of Exploration POD+PDF [Campaign Setting] (Zac Angel)
  • Forest Kingdom Campaign Compendium (Legendary Games) [Wasn't impressed with this, returned it]
  • Sandy Petersen's Cthulhu Mythos (Petersen Games)
  • Hypercorps 2099
Pathfinder 2E
  • Hardcover Playtest Rulebook
Starfinder
  • Dead Suns Advtenure Path #3: Splintered worlds
  • Q-Workshop Starfinder Dead Suns Dice

Will update this in the following months as more is added to the collection. I did a lot better this year at buying smartly and with a keener eye towards the books I think I'll get the most use out of instead of buying wantonly.

11/22/2018 EDIT: Added Hypercorps 2099.

Congrats on that. ;)

I was able to control my wargaming «miniature addiction» again this year. I'm getting better (spending less) every year but I play the same number of games. My «box of shame» filled with unopened miniature boxes and blisters is almost empty now.

I joined two kickstarters: Lex Arcana and Calidar. Also, I'm getting Call of Cthulhu 7th edition.

I bought each of these this year, too. I especially like SS&SS. It's simple enough that my younger kids can run the game themselves, yet isn't written with kids in mind, so it's still a straightforward and fun system for a table full of adults.

I backed an unprecedented (for me) four Kickstarters for 5e products this year: Mini-Dungeon Tome (AAW Games), Tome of Horrors (Frog God Games), Followers & Strongholds (Matt Colville), and Pirate Campaign Compendium (Legendary Games). The first two have delivered PDFs; I'll eventually be getting print copies of the last two.

I've purchased a few more of Paizo's flip-mats and map packs, but I'd have to do some research to determine how many, and which ones.

The rest (not counting a few free PDFs)

Pathfinder:
Inner Sea Primer
Pathfinder Society Primer
Qadira, Gateway to the East
Faiths of Corruption

AGE:
Fantasy AGE Companion

D&D:
Mordenkainen's Book of Foes

5E D&D
All books released in 2018

D&D
AC5 Character Sheets - this was awesome, finally found one for a reasonable price. (still can't believe it)

AD&D
Ruins of Undermountain
Ruins of undermountain II
Several 1e and majority of 2e hardbacks (The 1e hardbacks were to have duplicates for play with my 12 yr old)
Fr7 Hall of heroes
Forgotten Realm City of Splendors
Forgotten Realms City System
Forgotten Realms Book of Lairs
Forgotten Realms Ruins of Myth Drannor
Dragonlance Book of Lairs
AD&D 2e Rogues Gallery
Ad&d N5
AD&D Uk 2,3,6, 7
AD&D WGR1
AD&D WG 8,9,10,11

I am pretty sure this completes my D&D BECMI/Mystara collection, and my AD&D 1E collection is nearly complete, for what I am going for, I am not going for every single box set or mini books or some of the other frivolous extras (Few random accessories left to get).
I am buying some AD&D 2E but not going for the full collection, just what seems good or needed for our campaign.
I buy all 5E books that come out from Wizards.

Just updated my list above, probably for the last time this year. I may be a bit more aggressive in buying RPG product next year considering that PF2E is coming out next summer and PF1E will be an almost dead dinosaur I would like to get the rest of the 1E Paizo hardcovers plus some 3PP material (mostly POD) that I am afraid of missing the boat on as it may get pulled.

Bought Mordenkainen's Tome of Foes the day it was released, and quite recently I found (and got) Legacy of the Crystal Shard at a very affordable price. For some reason, I find DNDNext adventures much more appealing than the line of adventure paths Wizards has so far released.
As for non-D&D stuff, I got my hands on Dungeon World a few months ago.
Have a look at my Dark Sun 5e Reconstruction or Planescape 5e Belief System

I finally got Cthulhu 7th edition (excellent, BTW), as well as Eternal Lies in Italian (I already had the original in PDF, but I found the Italian paper version at a 75% discount) as well as some older CoC supplements, and the Corellia supplement for Edge of the Empire (once more with a strong discount -- I don't play EoE, so I only got it for the system neutral information and art).

Having read it once - I think I like what they have done. I still think characters gain skill too slowly - so they will get to fight in the Hero Wars (which have already begun at the default start of play), but with skill gain rolls now being every season (rather than after each adventure) there is no way the characters will get really high skills before the end of the wars. They will be much more tied into their homes (which is a good thing), but they won't become "Heroes".
That said, a good GM shoud be able to get round that, and I really like the magic changes.

I recently bought the Unity core book. I like the system and the setting. The system attempts to emulate the big, cinematic action that 13th Age exceeds at, best I can tell (I haven't actually run/played it yet). The setting takes place in a time not long after a great change to the world -- the mother goddess was killed by mortals and the father god caused a great cataclysm in his wrath. The outcome is more than just geographical or climate changes but extends to curses on the races, a weakening between the planes, the introduction of undead, and so on. Mix in some magitech from the previous age and rules for giant constructs and it feels different enough from other settings to make it worth a read.

I bought everything there is of Tails of Equestria (My little pony RPG) mainly to play with my 4 year old daughter. I've been reading the rules and such for two days now and it seems a great, straightforward, system written by Alessio Cavatore who designed my favourite miniatures wargame too (Middle-Earth Strategy Battle Game). Next weekend we're off to Equestria!

Oh and i'm nearing completion of Dark Sun and on my way to completing BECMI/Mystara.

Tonight I succumbed to the dark side of the FFG marketing and bought Star Wars Edge of the Empire + the special dice. It's time I try their narrative dice system. I bought EoTE over the other era books because it's the outer rim and will give me more creative freedom, smugglers, scum and villainy to exploit.

I've heard mixed reviews from my friends. Please let us know what you think. I'm curious how easily the special dice are adapted to at the table, in particular.

I met a GM that wants to run an EotE game. I'll certainly give my impressions after that happened. Note that I'm a war gamer and icon dice are not new in the field. I also played numerous card games with icons so I think it will be very easy for me to adapt.

Also, I have the project of using this RPG to do a Solitary Sci-Fi game. I want to see how the icon dice can help build the story and the environment of the mission.
