[FREE] Open Legend RPG

Post by shesheyan » Tue Jul 09, 2019 12:25 am

A FREE Open source RPG with online ruleset.

«Open Legend is a streamlined system designed to let you tell big stories using small rules. The rules get complex when they need to, but never cumbersome, and wherever they could be cut out or simplified, they have been. Some of the highlights at the heart of Open Legend are explained below.» ... «Yes, you can copy portions of the rules, share your unique character builds, invent your own feats, and write adventure modules or campaign settings. If you want to publish and sell your content, just have a look at our commercial license. We know you’ll love the game as much as we do, and we hope you’ll spread the love by publishing your own adventures, rules supplements, and more.»

Interesting concept.

I wonder how many 3rd Party Publishers will support this.

I seem to recall Ed Greenwood was involved (as a stretch goal, maybe?) with the original Kickstarter. The Core Book has been out for about 16 months, but I haven't seen any support from other publishers.

I haven't come across any reviews of the system yet. Has anyone here playted it? Does it have a default setting? What makes the system unique? How about the setting? Overall impressions?

Sorry for asking questions I could've answered if I'd spent a little time researching myself. It appears that not only was Ed Greenwood involved, but Matt Mercer was, too. I'm a little surprised I haven't heard more about a system/setting with such big names associated with it.

In regards to the system, it appears to be a d20, roll high, system. The twist is that attributes are reflected as dice that are added to the roll, and those dice explode. It also explicitly support failing forward, which is nice.

I'm a little hesitant about exploding dice. It does a good job of supporting certain types of fiction where heroes can get extremely lucky, but the players often don't like it when their enemies can get equally lucky. And with enemies rolling more dice over the course of a campaign, these systems often tend to work against the PCs more than for them. Perhaps there's a rule (or optional rule) that limits enemies' exploding dice, but even in those cases, it can be hard to work a PC one-shotting the BBEG with a lucky chain of high rolls into the narrative.

There's a campaign setting book for Amaurea's Dawn, but I couldn't find details about the setting on the site.

My post about it is still on the first page of posts in this forum. I guess I need to put FREE in the topic title to gather attention. :)

I missed your Open Legend topic too Dulsi. I think I might need to change the batteries in the Seeing Eye Hamster that helps curate The Piazza'a social media feeds.

Putting "[FREE]" in topic titles does seem to attract attention. ;)

I thought this was about the Runequest based RPG, but it appears to be a very different system based on exploding dice mechanics. Interesting.

It is strange to me that the pdf of a FREE game is sold $20.

Yeah, apparently not free at all.

From what I can see, all of the contents of the book (except art presumably), are available for free as a web presentation. They charge money for the PDF which probably includes illustrations as well as the material presented on the site.

I see nothing wrong with this approach, though I prefer Sine Nomine's philosophy of having the PDF for free, but then offer a fully illustrated PDF, print version and supplements for sale.

I can confirm that the PDF has a generous amount of full-color art. It's laid out nicely, too.
