War Machine first appeared in Frank Mentzer's Companion Set. I think Frank said that some concepts from that book may have been from other TSR designers at the time, but I think most of what's found in the Companion, Master and Immortals Sets are done by Frank. War Machine is indeed a great system. I think a similar system for the d20 rules appeared in Green Ronin's Black Company Sourcebook. It appears to have been closely inspired by the Companion Set.

I used Battlesystem extensively in my campaigns and have all the versions and most of the products for it. My goal with Battlesystem was to seamlessly pass between my campaign and the large battles. It worked very well for that, I found.

It was also just a fun system, I often played one off games that were unattached to my campaigns. And I ran to campaigns that were Battlesystem only. One of my PCs, Gildor Inglorion, had his entire career focused on Battlesystem as he created a mercenary company, the Bondswords, and earned most of his treasure and experience leading it in battle.

Battlesystem Fantasy Combat Supplement

This came first, a sweet boxed set that had counters and 2 miniatures. I think I lost mine over the years, sadly. the counters were awesome, for decades I used them to base many of my miniatures. Directly based on AD&D but a bit clunky. each unit required the equivalent of a character sheet! And of course there was a complicated combat matrix. :D Overly complicated, but did a great job converting AD&D magic spells over.

Battlesystem Miniatures Rules

The 2e version. Just the rules, no counters or minis, which were missed. but gorgeous photos that really inspired. The system is far more elegant than the 1e version, but magic was more abstract and a bit harder to convert. This was offset by later 2e books (Tome of Magic, for example) having Battlesystem specific spells (priests were superuseful in Battlesystem).

Battlesystem Skirmishes Miniatures Rules

This is a separate game, pretty much standalone. I never tried it, for fights of this size I was just using regular AD&D. But lately I've been more interested skirmish miniature battles, especially using variants of the Song of Blades and Heroes system [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Song_of_Blades_and_Heroes], so I might give it another look.

I ended up doing an article merging Battlesystem with Spelljammer, and building wooden ships to use with the naval Battlesystem rules in Dragon.
